Is this dumping syndrome?

This morning I woke up feeling loads better, day 5 post op.

I thought I'd try and drink a Protein Drink straight away to get it out the way, so I warmed up a cup of milk and added a scoop of vanilla powder shake to it. It was a bit sweet and sickly, but doable. I drank it, fairly quick maybe, within about 10 mins.

Then I started sweating so much, my tummy was churning, I needed to be sick or sit on the toilet.

Nothing happened either way, and I went to bed, fell asleep, and woke up 2 hours later.

What's all that about??

The gastric sleeve does not have dumping syndrome as a side effect. Dumping syndrome is synonymous with the bypass. You might have a lactose intolerance now or you drank way to fast. Those shakes are supposed to be sipped slowly over a longer period of time. I switched to almond milk and love it. Bonus...no lactose issues :D

people do have dumping with the sleeve. I had it happen when I added Peanut Butter to a Protein drink at about 2 weeks out. Ugly.

So why are you consuming so much milk? That is alot of carbs and just hard to digest. I did develop a lactose intolerance post sleeve and while yogurt and cheese are fine, milk and ice cream are not.

My weight loss center said sleeve patients can get dumping symptoms. It sounds like what you described. They also have us mixing our Protein Drinks with 1% milk. I am 9 days away and hoping not to experience this.

Oh I didn't realise I shouldn't be drinking milk :-( my dietician said to drink lots of milky drinks and add fortified milk powder to them, but also told me not to worry about Protein. So I've been trying to get protein in regardless.

I'm so confused now :-(

yeah i use 5oz of 1% or skim milk with my (sweet.i.e. chocolate strawberry vanilla, cappuccino) shakes and Water for my fruit flavored types. at my nutritionists request as well. while sleevers get some dumping we dont get dumping syndrome where you have long-term bouts of dumping unless you eat really wrong. i had it once and do not want that again.

Some people can handle milk with no issues. It's not all sleevers are told not to have it. It all depends on what your body will tolerate. Protein is huge!!! I can't imagine why a surgeon or nutritionist would say not to worry about it. It's the quickest way to heal and it's what keeps you from losing a shit ton of hair during the 3-6 month mark!

I'm in the uk, and they seem to do different things here. But the reason I'm still trying to get Protein in regardless is because I want to heal and I don't want Hair loss. They said to worry about protein later on and not yet. . But I'm not buying it. I'll try my protein with Water instead, see how that goes ..

You just drank it too quickly. You are in a new world now. You cannot eat nor drink at the same pace you used to. This is one of the first things you must learn. Slow down, chew well and take smaller bites.

Do this and you'll be fine.

Update... I tried a few sips of a different Protein drink. Very slowly. Same happened again, but this time I've been on the toilet with bad bad runs. :-( tummy is so painful. so fed up. How do I get protein down ??

The most important thing with any WLS is to eat and drink slowly. Milk can and does become a problem for many patients. Also maybe don't heat up the milk. I have had a band and sleeve and only use Water or soy milk. My doctors have said not to use almond milk because it had hardly any nutritional value and very little Protein

Crohn's disease and IBS cam be side effects of the sleeve as well.

Every surgeon has their own recommendations, i just know that I could not handle milk in the early months. Even now, I am intolerant of it to some extent which was the best thing that could have happened to me. I was an ice cream junkie and now IF I have it, it is tiny quantities and makes me feel kinda icky so it is no longer a temptation. I also have a personal belief that adult humans are not really designed to consume alot of milk. It is very high carb. A doctor once told me that cows milk is designed to turn a little calf into a big ole steer really fast... and it does the same thing to some humans..ha!

Anyway, I still suspect it is the lactose. I have no idea what Protein is available in the UK, but we have premixed ones that are lactose free and taste fairly decent for a Protein Drink. I think whey Protein source is a good choice.

I loved drinking regular milk pre op. However post op I became lactose intolerant. I'm a little over 2 months post op and I still can't tolerate regular milk unless I take some Lactaid. I now use almond and soy milk. I've also recently tried Lactaid milk and I really like it. Tastes just like milk but w/o the lactose.

I had a cup of tea with soya milk, and I've been fine since. So I guess I avoid real milk for now.... Thanks again everyone :-)

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

        I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.
