Any April Sleevers?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled next week, April 23!! I am 1 week into the pre-op diet, and still feeling a bit hungry. I know I'm not drinking Water like I should, so I am pushing myself today.

Getting so excited! I am obsessed with looking at before & after photos! I am sure I'm not alone......lol

You are so not alone! The funny thing is that I always hated before and after pics before I knew the surgery was a reality for me. They always made me feel like such a failure. It was like a tease. Once I was scheduled for surgery, I spent hours marveling at before and after pics!

Now I'm 3 days post-op. I still can't imagine becoming thin. It's so strange. I can't wait! I know how excited you are for the surgery - that was me all last week! I was counting the days!

Hello from Texas! I was sleeved on April 6th in Dallas, Texas and on the road to recovery. Buddies are great for support! I have learned more through this forum than I have my own doctor, so I feel that having this support system is going to be a excellent part of our weight loss journey.

@@erose321 I didn't think the EGD was any big deal at all. When is your date? (sorry if you said earlier and I missed it) My date is next Thursday. I'm on day 2 of liquid diet. Had the worst headache ever today. I called the Dr to see what, if anything I could take for it, and I was ok'd to take excedrine Migraine. Thank goodness. Just no Advil or Motrin. Oh, and while he had me on the phone, he told me he moved my surgery up. I'll be first in line! I think someone chickened out. YAY me!!!

I'm Thursday April 23 and couldn't be soon enough! The process itself wasn't the worst but all day my stomach was terrible I'm day 8 of my liquid diet and a bit cranky. My surgery is tentatively 11am. Our hospital does the time schedule so they will call to confirm the day before.

Hello All :) I had sleeve gastrectomy March 27th and as of today I'm on week 4 of the diet which for me means no more Protein Shakes THANK GOD because I have become disgusted by them and I hope to never drink them EVER again........now I'm on scrambled eggs and tuna as my main sources of Protein 1/4 of a cup 3x a day working my way up to 1/2 cup 3x per day over 20 minutes.....unfortunately it takes me more like 30 or 40 minutes to get down 1/4 cup of eggs and I was only able to do about 1/16 cup of tuna and a tiny cracker for lunch....Is anyone else having issues eating/ drinking enough? I went to the Dr today and he said I'm undergoing ketosis and recommended I drink 1 litre of gatorade...today LOL theres no way...I've been drinking it so much but I'm so sick of it...the red kind anyways up until today I had been feeling super nauseous and weak almost ALL the time.....is anyone on this stage of post op yet?? If so I'd love some insight :)

Hi Camen606

I had my sleeve April 2, I'm on week 3 diet which includes scrambled eggs (tuna next week) I agree with you about the Protein shakes! I am so OVER them. My surgeon said that I may have to supplement my protein with shakes to get all my protein. That did not thrill me. Anyway, I did something stupid today, I ate one egg in probably 5-6 minutes. Not a good idea, it was very painful! Lesson learned. I think I feel better and sometimes forget that I had surgery. This week is cottage cheese, yogurt, beans, cheese, eggs, and a few other things I can't remember, probably because I don't like them anyway. Good luck on your journey, I like hearing what others are doing that had the surgery around the same time. No one I know understands my choices, so I have found this page very helpful!

Thanks for your insight....I couldnt eat 1/4 cup of scrambled egg in 10 minutes if I tried.....I've always been a slow eater but now I'm REALLY slow....how do you FEEL? I feel weak and tired and my stomach feels upset 75 percent of the time....had an appt with the DR today and he said it will get better with time ...also are you having any issues with ketosis? I am majorly...my DR just said drink gatorade and it would get better but idk just have a nasty taste in my mouth....my diet sounds more strict than yours as I cant have Beans yet but idk if I'm even looking forward to next week because i feel sick to my stomach most of the time so idk if new foods will make that better or worse....i just want to feel NORMAL again and even though my DR assures me I will I just dont know.....I hope we can keep in touch since we are only a week apart in surgery dates...I've lost 55lbs since I started my pre op diet which was in the middle of January....my DR says this is good but the low calories I've been on and am on I just wish it was more...how is your weight loss going?

Hi Carmen606

Well, prior to surgery I was a fast eater. I was talking to my sister while I was eating my egg and not being very mindful of my eating. Let's just say, I won't do that again! It was painful. I took about 1/2 hour to pass before I felt right. My instinct was to take a drink of Water to wash it down, which I didn't do because I would have made it worse. As for how I'm feeling, I've been pretty good. No nausea at all. I feel pretty good about that. I had my surgery during my spring break and went back to school at 10days post op. I walk a lot on campus and think I over did it on Monday. By days end I had logged 5 miles on my fit bit. On Tuesday, I had zero energy. I laid around all day. It was like I hit a wall. I called my nutritionist and asked her and she felt it was a combo of things that zapped my energy, one she felt was low blood pressure. I was on a blood pressure pill for my diabetes. My dr took me off and I feel a million times better. If I had more stamina, I'd say I was back 100%. But it's really more like 85%. Prior to surgery I had been exercising regularly. Running about 3-5 miles a day. I even did my first 5k the Sunday before surgery. I think that helped me rebound so quickly. I have been waking a minimum of a mile each day, and three days a week between 3-5 miles. It takes me a lot longer than before surgery and that frustrates me. I hope you get back to feeling yourself soon.

As far as ketosis , I'm not sure what that feels like or is. I know when you eat a lot of Protein your body goes into ketosis, but what does it feel like. If it's a nasty metal taste in your mouth, I've got that off and on! I hate that taste. Today was my first day of soft foods. ( first two weeks were Protein Drinks only) I can have eggs, Beans, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, quinoa, cheese, Peanut Butter. There is a few other item, but can't remember off the top of my head. My goal is 40 grams of protein, it was 30 the first two weeks. I had a hard time getting it with the shakes because I was so turned off by them. Today I did it! I've gotten my fluids in most of the days, and I know that helps.

Pre-op I lost 40lbs and I have lost another. 19 since surgery. It's crazy how fast it falls off. I had a post op yesterday and the surgeon was quite happy.

I'm curious to follow your journey as well, it's interesting to see how everyone's experience is different. So far, it's been ok for me. The first few days were the hardest. I'm looking forward to seeing just how the path unfolds for me. I look forward to seeing yours as well. I'm not hat great at this site yet. Not even sure how to edit my profile or add friends. I'll figure it out though.

Hope all is well for you,

Kathy G

Surgery Date is April 29th. FINALLY - its been a LONG time coming :) Day three of the pre-op diet, and while my surgeon doesnt require weight loss prior, its always good to shrink the liver and get used to the new normal. Looking forward to watching all of us April 2015 sleevers meet our goals!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
