Am I the only one with Diarrhea?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

First post here. I was sleeved on October 1 of this year. I have to say that I have not had Constipation one day- My problem is that I have diarrhea multiple times a day, and after anything I ingest. I go back to the doctor the 21, but after reading several topics on this board, should I be worried I am doing the opposite of the vast majority of everyone?

I am also having gas a lot. Any info here would be appreciated, thanks!

I've had some diarrhea also the first week or so. It's gotten better though but some days I was having multiple episodes a day. I think it's just our systems trying to adjust to all this.

At 9 1/2 months out I stll seem to be alternating between diarrhea and Constipation - having a hard time finding the balance. So glad I am retired. I cannot imagine going through bariatric surgery and having to go to work, or raise kidlets at home, or having to do both and be expected to pull it together. To those of you in that position: you are my heroes.

I was sleeved on 9/9/14. In the beginning I had bad bouts of diarrhea. Some were so bad I almost did not make it to the bathroom in time. I seemed to have problems with the Protein shakes, some brands were worse than others. I would almost vomit on the Protein Shakes and they ALWAYS gave me diarrhea. Now I can drink them and they don't bother me at all. Who knows why. Yesterday I had a horrid bout with diarrhea. As has been stated, it is our systems trying to adjust. Hopefully, with time the bouts will lessen.

I too had the runs for about 2 weeks post surgery, it's normal and enjoy the "cleanliness from within" as once you start eating, going to the potty won't be as frequent lol. As for the gas, walk walk walk, it's the only thing that truly helps. Good luck, it does get better!!!!!

and don't forget to drink your fluids, as diarrhea can dehydrate you.

It is normal. I had it bad in the beginning as well. There were times when I went on myself and didn't know it, too much info I know. But it is true. I used to hear people complain about Constipation but I did not experience it at the time. Make sure you stay hydrated like jessiquoi said. It will get better.

It's not uncommon. Sometimes it's a mild and usually temporary reaction to the milk Proteins in the Protein powder/drinks. Sometimes using non dairy milk or Water instead of cow's milk helps. Sometimes people need to switch to soy or other plant based Protein Drinks. For most people it goes away or lessons with the reintroduction of regular foods.

uffff so good to read this! I have had a horrible diarrhea for over 14hrs, out of the blue, and I was trying to rack my brain what did I do to have caused it. So... you guys are saying: most likely Protein shakes? I hate them with a passion... now my body rejects it too lol..

I have a question? what do you eat on days like that?

I am so weak and dehydrated! I'm forcing Water into me but anything 'food-like' that I put in my mouth causes me to run for the WC immediately. I only had few mouthful of rice in 2 days.

I unfortunately expereinced that for about three and a half weeks. I have PCOS and I think mine was due to hormonal flucuation issues. The problems began on day 1 of my first TOM post surgery and persisted up until the second TOM. I tried variations in my diet and nothing really alleviated the problem. I didn't come close to meeting my Protein and Water goals during that time and could not tolerate any Vitamins, but the priority really shifted to just finding foods I could eat without causing huge stomach upset. Anything with too much liquid caused a problem. I'd wake up three to four times a night to go to the bathroom, and during the day had to run there after I ate or drank anything. I was really worried about becoming severely dehydrated. I began drinking Pedialyte (which tastes vile) during the week when it was the worst. I sipped Gatorade, too. It's not a very healthy drink if you're not a serious athlete completing a workout, but at the time it was what my body was receptive to having and it helped me to get some calories and electrolytes in.

For me eating fruit with a higher Water content, like watermelon, was a way of getting some hydration in along with actual food. I stopped with the Protein shakes and started having more soft solids like mashed potatoes mixed with green Beans. I wasn't getting in that many calories or fat a day and my weight loss definitely stalled, but that was a secondary issue. My stomach problems were dominating my life for a while, but I felt confident they would eventually subside and they did. I can eat normally now. Hallelujah! I don't have ready to drink Protein Shakes anymore, but I make smoothies using plain Greek or Bulgarian yogurt, a scoop of Protein powder, a bit of berries, and some kale every morning for Breakfast to get me started.

I think the Probiotics from the yogurt and from the supplement I take helps soothe my stomach.

I thought I was the only one with diarrhea. I had my first bout day 2 and 3 after surgery. Now I feel like I have to go and can't. Also felt like my butt was on fire! Also having pain from straining my umbilical hernia repair which is preventing me from straining to poop. Kind of a lose lose for me.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
