Will i ever be able to painlessly drink coffee?

Recommended Posts

I am almost 6 months post op and I enjoy a cup of coffee or 2 a day but it doesn't like me!! ???? Every time I drink it it makes me feel sick, sometimes nauseous!! I ask myself why am I doing this but it doesn't stop me! I'm not addicted bc I can not have it for days at a time and I'm fine but now when I do it makes me happy for the first 2-3 sips then my stomach hurts!! Will this go away??

I can't tell you anything exactly about your condition as there as too many possibilities. I will say that I had not even tried coffee till 9 months or more and that was because diet cokes just took too long to drink due to the carbonation. I have no problems drinking a 20 oz cup of coffee with half and half in it , but it takes me 30 min to do so. I can drink Water , unsweet tea or g2 Gatorade faster but not like I used to.

With you having pain you should stop drinking it for now. My advice would be for you to follow up with your doc and / or nutritionist. If that is not possible then stop and try it in 3 months. It's probably just that your new tummy doesn't like the coffee and it might get over that in time but there is the possibility that you've got something going on. Do you have this feeling with any other foods or drinks? How do you feel overall? How often and how much are you eating? The answers to those questions might help your doc figure out what's going on. I know there are a few people who just can't tolerate certain foods or drinks irregardless of how long they are out from surgery.

Have you been drinking coffee the whole time and just now it's starting to hurt or is the coffee recently new? Decaf or regular? I switched to decaf before surgery and only drank decaf herbal tea immediately postop. I tried coffee a couple times and it always upset my sleeve. Finally, at about 4 months I could drink decaf coffee comfortably.

I'm over 9 months postop now and never bothered to switch back to caffeinated. But sometimes I will have a cup of regular if I'm at a friend's house or on the road and they don't have decaf. It usually ends up irritating my sleeve. But decaf will, too, if I drink too much. Regular just does it sooner. Coffee is acidic and if it's hurting, you should tell your doc and check out the possibility of an ulcer.

I've been drinking coffee since I was cleared for a general diet (at one month out) with no ill effects. I stick a scoop of Protein powder in it to get in a quick 30 grams. But coffee just might be one of those things that bothers you. My body's reaction to caffeine is an odd one though - It does not ramp me up. I do not get withdrawal from it if I quit, and I can quit cold turkey. I could drink it right before going to bed!

Thanks for your answers everyone!! @forsithia- my body has always reacted that way to caffeine too! Think that's why I'm so confused! Lol!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
