Something to Worry About?

Recommended Posts

Fair warning it's a little graphic with nausea/vomitting.

I'm more than a year out post op. Lastnight I had 2 pieces of chicken from KFC (it was the crispy kind, i know i know). An hour or so afterward, I took a nap. When I woke up, not sure how long after. I had intense nausea and threw up. It wasn't a lot, there was no blood, it basically looked like my stomach was pretty much empty. Since then my stomach has not been settled and I've been on a slow burn with anxiety about it.

The nausea hasn't gone away. It's sort of being held in check w/ some Emetrol so I haven't thrown up since.

This is the first time i threw up since before surgery (i really can't remember the last time I threw up). My stomach is currently feeling very sensitive, even to sips of Water. It's not feeling settled and that's just not how it's been in the past. Originally, I thought it was food poisoning but I'm not having diarrhea (at least not yet). I don't have a fever.

I'm not used to having such a sensitive stomach and now I've gotten myself a little worked up over the possibilities of complications from the sleeve. Has anyone else had a night of this post op?

I haven't been able to sleep well at all and now I'm not sure if it's because I've gotten myself worked up or if there's a problem with my stomach....

Worked up is an issue but it is founded.

Get some Diavol or Rolaids ( some kind of antacid ) and take a couple of those every few hours. If the problem does not settle in a day or so. I would contact my surgeon. Also I am sure that KFC is not the choice for you. It has taken a toll on your system. Nothing wrong with it once in a while I do have it myself. But I think your sleeve is saying no way to it!

It is always a good idea to check in with your team if the problem persists...okay! :)

My mom (who hasn't had WLS and is super skinny) has the exact same reaction to KFC. I don't think you damaged anything, it just sounds like all the grease in the chicken did not make your stomach happy and it needs a day or two to recuperate.

Nobody is perfect and makes bad choices from time to time - even skinny people! So, don't obsess over it, but eat very gently and very lightly until your tummy is ready to get back on track.

I will say that greasy food makes me sick as all heck. My joke is that I need to be in "training" to eat junk food. If you eat pretty clean then a big dose of crappy junky fast food about kills ya. I also want to mention that 2 pieces of chicken would be a HUGE amount for me to eat and I am 2.5 years post op. I do not have a tiny sleeve. i am only mentioning this as a caution for long term maintenance. The #1 success factor long term is controlling your food intake quantity so that means stopping before being full and not grazing. I am not a doctor but based on what i have read, this isn't about the sleeve being stretched, it is more about what feels normal, what is familiar, what is the habit. That is why I keep saying to everyone to "eat small".

I would have to agree with @LumpySpacePrincess...I wasn't able to eat KFC even before my surgery because I had a similar reaction. Grease is not my friend (but then, I haven't been able to eat fast food without adverse reaction since my gall bladder came out eight years ago)

If it doesn't clear up, definitely call you doctor.

I saw the doctor today. He doesn't really know what to make of it either. I've put myself back on Protein Shakes. Just going to take it easy for a couple days. Thanks for the replies!

If your Dr doesn't think it's due to your sleeve there are a few other possibilities. It could be a stomach bug (its going around), you could be sensitive from the grease in the chicken. Nerves from the fear it's your sleeve. Or heat if it's hot where you live.

Hope you feel better

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
