Hi I'm 49, almost 50. I'm 5'4" and weigh 287 lbs. I'm down from 303 lbs. The most I've ever weighed is 305 lbs. I am a care giver. I have two children with serious illnesses and both are doing so well. In fact, they've both outlived their diagnosis. About 2 years ago, another one of my children was diagnosed with cancer. She had two surgeries and a year of chemo. She is currently in remission. Praise God!

I have always been overweight. I was a fat baby, a fat child, a fat teenager and a fat adult. I have good self-esteem, but have health problems. Diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, you know, the typical stuff with being obese. Now that everyone is doing well and I have more time for myself, I decided to do the R&Y. Initially I wanted the sleeve. My insurance just approved the surgery on January 1st this year. I was ready. The problem was that my insurance didn't cover the surgical facility. After several months, they decided to allow me to have the surgery after July 1st. While I was waiting for this magical date, I did all of the preliminary stuff. I was ready and waiting for approval and got it last week. I am not nervous about the surgery. I am more nervous about gaining the weight back. I know so many who have done this. I'm really determined to not allow this to happen. I'm motivated! I'm pumped! Just struggling with eating the things I won't be able to in the future, now. Man, I'm craving everything! I only have to do the liquid thing the day before the surgery. But I'm thinking that maybe I should start now. Just don't know what to do.

In the meantime, I'm trying to clean out my closets, my drawers, etc. I want to make room for new skinny clothes. I hope to surprise my parents and siblings next year. I'm not going to tell them. My dream for years is to get off the airplane and have them not recognize me. I'm so excited for this that I can't wait! August 5th can't come fast enough!!!

I'm 53, and tomorrow I find out if I can move forward with the RNY. I've done sleep studies and EKGs and ultrasounds and pulmonary testing and psych eval and bloodwork. I've had one appointment with my NUT and tomorrow is the second one. I meet with the director of bariatric surgery tomorrow as well. I'm hoping that I get my insurance approval and my surgery date tomorrow, but I really don't know. The "not knowing" is really driving me nuts!

I'm trying out different Protein Drinks and trying to get into a routine of exercise. I bought a scale finally, and am losing a little weight, which is exactly what my NUT recommended...hold steady or lose just a little. I'm on the borderline for approval on the weight, but since sleep apnea has been diagnosed, I have a medical reason to have the surgery, so I'm not really worried about losing too much weight and losing approval.

So let's hope that I get approved, and get my date. Hoping for late August!

That's awesome. Been doing the liquid diet since Tuesday and haven't lost a thing!!! Very frustrating.

So, I'm 33. I am 305 lbs. What about yourself? It is nice to have someone to go through this with. I don't know about you, but some days I feel like I'm alone in this journey even though I have people that are supportive. I guess it's because the people that are supportive don't really understand what we actually have to go through physically or emotionally when we decide to make this journey.

I'm 36 (5'3) and just got down to 301 from 333 on my pre-surgery diet. My surgery is scheduled on the 18th of August!

Can you spread the shakes out? Like drink a little bit every 30 minutes just to help with the hunger.

I have to do shakes up until surgery. They want me to use the shakes they have because they have all the Vitamins etc... But I don't think I'll make it with them. I may sneak in a few of mine that are much better. I think the nausea is that my stomach is really empty and growling all the time. I keep drinking Water to try and soothe it.

YES! Most definitely you should do this before and after surgery..it helps with hunger and it allows you to get your needed Protein in post-op when your tummy is too small to have it all at once.

well I made it thru the weekend! Yesterday seemed like a turning point. No nausea, no stomach growling, yay! Best part is I stepped on the scale this morning and am down 5 lbs since last Wednesday, not even a week! Woo Hoo!!

I am 64. I had lap band 6 1/2 yrs ago and went from 292 to 172. Then all the trouble started with pneumonias, etc. all the Fluid came out of the band but the illnesses continued and worse. I am now 235 and 5' 4" . I know EXACTLY what you mean. Surgery and recovery don't worry me. Gaining all the weight back does !! Twice in my life I have lost over 100 lbs. and gained it back, or at least mist of it. I just can't go through that again. I am so proud if all of us. This is just a tool, we're told. If we stick together and use each other we CAN do it. I need to share tough times not just successes... Does anyone else have that "keep your troubles to yourself !" mantra from childhood? I have been eating like crazy like I'm about to head out on a death march .. This has got to stop. I have 1 week of preop diet. Surgery on the 20th. Thanks for listening!

I start my pre-op tomorrow for surgery on Friday and I have decided that I'm going to eat steak..I haven't had it since my sleeve in 2012 (can't eat anything solid) and there is a chance that you may never tolerate red meat after the bypass so I'm going to have two bites and prepare my pain medicine. Hopefully I don't die, it will be really soft steak and by gosh I'm going to do it in case I can never have it again.

Tomorrow it begins, I'm already having weird dreams about it..tis going to be a long week but I'll manage :)

Boppin' Bubbe, I'm so happy you're able to do the surgery. I have been pigging out for a week or so. All of the sudden, I just wanted everything. I've been eating with no abandon and when I stepped on the scale this morning, I was horrified to find that I had gained so much weight. Now I weigh right at 300 lbs. I am so disappointed with myself. I am determined that I will get back down before surgery. I've decided to start a liquid diet now. My doctor only requires it the day before surgery, but I need to get a handle on this now!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
