I am Aug. 4th for my surgery. I'm getting the roux n y gastric bypass. It's the best one for my out of control diabetes. I'm on day 9 of my liquid diet. So far, so good! Not really starving even when people are eating around me. I am looking forward to my surgery and could use some Aug. buddies too!

Great to know someone will be going this the SAME day as me! We most certainly need to connect Emlatta so we can help each other through this! WE are now 2 weeks out!!!

So, looking foward to doing this!!!!! My date is also set for the 5th of August.

Mine is scheduled for Aug 5th. I go to preop on July 28th. I TOTALLY agree that this is an emotional roller coaster. One second I am so excited then the next a feel like throwing up. So many fears. For 1 my mother died during surgery a few years ago - 2nd I dont even know what my actual surgery will be. Wanted sleeve - but due to GERD doc suggested bypass BUT have lots of scar tissue from 4 other abdominal surgeries ( tumor removal - 6ks later complete hysterectomy - few years later gall bladder and then 1 year ago twisted bowel) so he may not be able to do the bypass and would instead do the sleeve. SO it will be a surprise! I also have to stop smoking or my doc won’t do the surgery - so that is also creating havoc on my nerves! I know that I will be able to get through this and I am confident I will be a success - but it doesn’t stop the nerves from shorting out every now and then! lol

I have always been bigger than the rest of my family and friends. I was always the "big girl with the pretty face”. Hate that saying! I have always tried to hide behind laughter by making fun of myself before anyone else had the chance to do it. Outside you would never know that I am so self-conscience and insecure - but I am. I always feel judged and afraid of..what I dont know...but inside I know there is a skinnier - healthier person just waiting to get out! I can see that person in my mind and cant wait to finally meet her!

So good luck to all of us and here is to a wonderful journey we can all go on together! I am here for anyone who wants to reach out!! Lets do this!!!!!!!

I've been the insecure one too. Many times in fact. Been there, done that with the jokes about myself before someone else could do it.

Good luck to you in your journey. You will be in my prayers. We have 21 days left as of today!!!!!

I must be really lucky - and hate to put this out here - but my doc didnt put me on ANY diet prior to surgery. My only restriction is nothing after midnight the night before - which is standard for any surgery! And seems like I am eating everything I can get my hands on! Feel like I am cheating myself by having all these "this is the last time I will get to eat this" moments!! Anyone else who is not to dieting stage yet having same issue?

I'm only on a 3 day liquid diet, my surgeon tailors it to your starting BMI. food funerals are very common and I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm enjoying some foods that I love knowing it could be the last time ever if I have bad dumping and if not at least for a while. Though, if you get the sleeve you will definitely be able to eat your favorite foods after you heal. I'd also be lying if I said I'm not praying hard for you to get a bypass, I know you wanted the sleeve but your GERD worries me so much since I had the same thing and am now in bad shape 2 years later and revising. Don't overdo the food funerals because you don't want to put on weight prior to surgery but I don't think it's too naughty to enjoy some food before you have surgery :)

Hi I'm Amy and I too am having my surgery on August 5th. Like you I am nervous, excited and scared. I recently lost 14 lbs. trying to eat less and was doing great. Then all of the sudden I began to panic. I need ice cream, one more piece of this or that. I want to go to this restaurant or that one. Oh my....I am struggling right now. Can't wait for the surgery and getting off this weight. I have been heavy my entire life. I started packing up my winter clothes to give to my church's thrift store. This has actually been kind of fun! I know my current winter clothes won't fit this winter. Yeah!

Hey Amy - another one that will be going through this at same time!!! I am scared to pack up any clothes. I have always been a shop-a-holic but have not allowed myself to buy any more fat clothes. Planning on wearing what I have until they fall off of me. THEN I am going on a shopping spree!

Becky I am kinda hoping for the bypass myself. After reading and learning more about it these past weeks - I am not afraid of it anymore and in fact think it would suit me much better then the sleeve. Sweets has always been the hardest thing for me to let go of - the bypass would help to make me suffer if I dont let them go! though I also know some people are still able to tolerate them - but I wont risk getting sick...

I am getting very excited. I need a pal. I was looking at some of the reconstruction pictures. I'm going to be 50 in September and am not sure that I will have it done. On the other hand, who knows? Maybe I will. Regarding the clothes, I too am a shopper. I just know that my clothes won't fit in the winter. I live in Fresno, CA. Very hot here most of the year. Winters can be cold, but no snow. Looking forward to buying skinny clothes not purchased in a plus sized store!

It's exciting and it's coming up! Only 11 more days for me :) I bought a fitbit over the weekend and am loving it! You can hook it up to MyFitnessPal and it will track the calories you put out and the calories you take in. My Nut at the hospital can monitor my MFP account so she knows exactly what I'm eating..pretty nifty!

If you guys have MFP accounts and or fitbit accounts add me, my username is the same there as it is here: beckyyb93

We can help motivate each other after surgery because as I'm sure you all know it will get tough and having buddies to give pep talks helps a ton!

Hi! Congratulations on your surgery date! I was just approved for band to RNY yesterday by my insurance. I am looking at an August 2014 surgery too! I haven't figured out how to friend people on this site, but I did click to follow the topic.

I have gone completely low carb. My NUT said 30 or less carbs per day. This site has REALLY YUMMY recipes: http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/

I have cooked many things in the past weeks and highly recommend it. I went cold turkey off Dr. Pepper. Cold turkey off all the things I should not have. Sugar and carbs are poison to someone with my metabolism and body-make-up. This is a fact I have come to accept recently. I am going to approach it as a food allergy type situation.

I should be choosing a date this week!!!!!!!

-Melissa

The date is set...Aug 12th! Its been 7 months since my first appt...and here I am, scared, nervous and so excited. I'll be having hernia repair, bypass and gallbladder taken out in one shot. Anyone who had anything similar to those procedures, I'm super interested to hear of your recovery and how long before returning to work (though I realize everyone is different). I would love to buddy up with someone!

Hello, I can totally understand the temptation to do last minute treats and indulgences, but - if I told myself I would never have a food item again EVER, I would certainly go insane. A bite of something after RNY will satisfy. Gone are the days of pigging out on an entire tub, bag, carton, etc. "Forever" for me is a bad word, so i just don't use it. My changes are permanent, but cant use that word. LOL

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
