Dumping Syndrome....... Advice?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure I have experienced this twice now. The first was at work, I had unsweetened applesauce with granola and raisins mixed in for Breakfast, About half of a Lean Cuisine Cheesy broccoli and potatoes for lunch, then a package of chewy Sweet Tarts mid afternoon ( not the best snack, I know). About 1 1/2 hrs after the candy...... Felt lightheaded, queasy, weak, looked pale, and had a light sweat. That day I are a Protein Bar and felt better within a few minutes. Today I had turkey sticks and cheese sticks for breakfast, chili dog for lunch, and creamy Peanut Butter mid afternoon, with the same symptoms, except I still felt full from the peanut butter, So I didn't eat anything, but laid down for an hour or so and felt better but not great until about an hour ago. Any advice on how to handle this better if it happens again? Obviously candy and peanut butter are no longer acceptable snacks....

Don't eat foods that you shouldn't be eating.

Interesting - the symptoms you're describing is what I was experiencing in the morning after my Protein shake Breakfast during my first two weeks. It was so unpleasant that I just started skipping breakfast. If I had a Protein Shake in the evening (to catch up on my Protein needs) I wouldn't have the issue - only in the morning. Still a mystery to me, but now that I'm on mushies I have an egg for breakfast and it's fine.

Anyway - I guess just experiment and try to avoid the things that trigger it.

I got dumping syndrome with almond milk when I first went on full liquids. I went back to Water in my Protein drinks and eventually I could tolerate the almond milk again (though I use a small amount now) to not overwhelm my system.

Here is what I have discovered I cannot eat anymore:

dairy (no yogurt or cheese)

high fat or fried foods (I had a few pieces of an Indian snack-muruku-fried chickpeas) and became very ill

sugar (both regular and artificial) got dumping syndrome from a few bites of a Quest bar and also with a sugar free Syrup in a coffee

Also, before the sleeve, I favored sweet foods and loved them. Post-sleeve, I find myself grossed out by sweets and craving savory (chips, crackers)...strange, but I'm happy to not be enslaved to sugar anymore. I just need to make sure I avoid crackers and chips now.

Try to avoid dairy, high fat foods, sugars and fried foods. Focus on Protein first, vegetables second, berries third. I have felt much better since and also being cleared for yoga again has cured my exercise boredom with my daily walks.

I met a woman who was 1-year post-sleeve when I was getting sleeved and she was unable to eat sweets anymore and I recall her telling me it was a gift to be free from that craving-she's correct. Be grateful for dumping syndrome on foods we shouldn't eat. Record your reaction to foods and keep it in mind as you move from soft foods to regular foods. Soft foods was the worst for me because I can't tolerate dairy. I was basically on liquids still (Soups, Protein Drinks and sugar-free popsicles).

All the best to you!

When I experience dumping, it is absolutely because I either had too much fat or too much sugar (or both). I suggest reading labels as a great place to start. For example, eliminating the candy and the pb is a great plan, but also check on the sugar content of the raisins, applesauce and the granola - you might be consuming more sugar than you realize, which could be contributing to the dumping. It's the little things that tend to trip me up, so maybe the same thing is happening to you. Good luck!

I wanted to add, "Dumping Syndrom" is when food passes undigested into your small bowels, causing nausea and diarrhea.

I believe it is more common with bypass than it is with sleeve.

What the original poster described sounds more like a sugar issue.

I thought that might be the issue, because because I felt very full, but I did have loose stools all afternoon(sorry if TMI). I just don't want to feel that way again if I can help it. The first time was all on me, but the second, I thought I would be okay. Mostly Protein all morning, and the Peanut Butter only had 3 gm of sugar.

Thank you everyone for your help

I've seen a number of posts from sleevers about Reactive Hypoglycemia which, for people who have had gastric surgeries, can happen when food passes too quickly through the digestive system. Maybe this is what some of you have been experiencing?

this isnt dumping, its reactive hypoglycemia.

you need to go see your nut to reevaluate your eating plan.

hmmm, when I had my sleeve done, the doctor referred to it as dumping syndrome. It starts with dizziness, nausea, cold sweat or heat flush and then I throw up or go to the bathroom. Some people experience it with the sleeve-where what you eat causes extreme illness then leaves the body immediately.

Reactive hypoglycemia is a form of dumping. There are 2 basic forms

http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?ContentTypeID=134&ContentID=107

Also

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactive_hypoglycemia

Dumping more common for bypass especially if sugary foods gets "dumped" into small intestine quickly without usual stomach to digest it. But is happens to 10-15% of people who have had a partial gastrectomy (which the sleeve is) whether for weight loss or other medical reason.

True dumping would not last overnight. It resolves itself in a few hours at most. Hopefully sooner! And it would have cardiovascular symptoms like palpitations and also flushing, etc.

Falafel a are deep fries and not full of sugar so may not have been dumping precisely. This could have been just over eating for the sleeve which would also make you feel yucky but not dumping. I ate a falafel too quick a couple weeks ago and felt pretty yucky for a while.

In any case hope you feel better soon and remember to eat very slowly any new food.< /p>

Thanks all - this thread has been very helpful to me too! I've emailed my nutritionist about my issues with Protein Shakes in the morning. I didn't think it was dumping because my shakes are not high at all in sugar or fat, and the descriptions I've seen of dumping sounded much more dramatic than what I was experiencing (I very often see people say that they feel like they're dying). I appreciate the info and education!

Feeling yucky was not what I was feeling

Trust me it was dumping. It didn't take more than 30 minutes from my stomach to my sphincter

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
