How much could you eat 2 weeks post op?

Recommended Posts

I'll be 3 weeks post op tomorrow. I just ate half a soft banana and I'm stuffed! At this point, like the others said, you shouldn't eat more than 2 ounces per sitting and never drink with your meals. Good luck!

I'm six weeks out and the NUT was very disappointed because I ate a 1/2 of a banana "A BANANA SHOULD BT 5 MEALS WORTH!" Week three you are eating about 1/4cup of purred Protein ( I.e. meats, ff re fried beans). At six weeks out I am shocked at times when I can get 3 ounces in, but usually it is only 2ounces 3x a day with one snack. There is a little skin on Beans, you have to worry about those little particles getting into your staple line and becoming infected.... Hence why only purred food. We all make mistakes, but try to sick to 1 to 2 ounces total for your meal until week 8 or beyond.

Tonya, this is very worrisome. Not that you made a mistake, everyone makes mistakes. What's worrisome is that none of this was ever explained to you by your doctor or their staff.

Where did you have your surgery done? My doctor and his staff and dietician have been very proactive about making sure I am very prepared for the life changes after surgery, and from what I've seen on this site, most everybody else here has had a similar experience.

If you had your surgery somewhere that did not go over these things with you and don't have adequate follow up, I strongly encourage you to find that assistance elsewhere.

I had it done with Dr Weiss here in Lexington, KY. He's been doing this for 12 years and has never lost a patient. Only had one leak out of 4 thousand patients.

My directions are not the same as yours. According to my surgeons guidelines, right now it is okay for me to eat beans, soft cooked veggies, soft fruits, baked or mashed potatoes.

Everyone is different my after my 1st week I was not getting enough substance. Soups where just giving me bubbly gut. So I asked my doc and he said I could go to purée at one week and slowly work up to mush each week. But if I had any problem with any food go back to what worked. I also had a hiatal hernia which made it had to swallow the 1st 2 weeks. So I stuck with eggs for. A while. Once I started to get real protien in my system I felt so much better. Small steps.

I'm sure your surgeon is very competent, but my concern is that it seems that post op life was not adequately explained to you. Aside from just the types of food you should be eating, someone should have gone over with you portion sizes and the fact that you should not drink with your meals and up to 1 hour after.

Does your surgeon have an on staff dietician that can go over these basics with you?

I'm saying this because not following some of these basic rules can really affect your weight loss, and considering what we have all gone through to get to have this surgery, I would hate to see all the hard work go to waste.

So, we're all shocked you were able to do this, not that you DID do it. Feel no shame. Learn about your meal plan, shake it off and move on. No biggie!

1/2 cup of cottage cheese is 3 ounces if I'm not mistaken. I eat a lot of it through out the week. I also make egg salad with one egg and ear it with about 8 wheat thins and I'm stuffed.

Just got back from my 1 week post op appointment. In a nut shell you should still be on a liquid /any thing that will go through a straw.. You still have a tender staple line and dont want to risk a hard substance getting caught where you're healing. That being said, I was able to eat yogart with granolia yesterday and beef jerkey, but today my doc advised against it. He also made it clear that everyone is different and to take it slowly and let things heal. This being the case I am back on anything that will go through a straw including yogurt. It was also suggested to not blend fruit that has small seeds such as strawberries, but a banana or peach smoothy would be OK. I was also told not to worry so much about calories but make sure I get my liquid in.

Today, as per my instructions, I was allowed baked or mashed potatoes and soft cooked veggies. Wow. I don't know what in the cat hair happened but I could only eat 4 small bites of a plain, baked potato for lunch and all I could eat for dinner was three, count em, three, baby carrots. So, I think things are working right now.

I talked to my NUT and she said I'm right where I should be but not to eat an entire can of Beans again. Not a problem!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
