I don't do fat free or light anything. (hidden sugars and carbs) I drink coconut or almond milk. The only thing I can't do anymore is 2% cottage cheese. I have had to switch over to 1% cottage cheese. great topic!

@@marfar7

i have always only drank skim milk - i like it :)

i luv my 2% Fage yogurt :)

but besides the yogurt, i usually buy 1% stuff (ie cottage cheese, yum :) )

Your body needs good fats to function properly. I do not do anything fat free or low fat. You have to balance your carbs and fat with your Protein to make your body a burning machine.

I love olive oil and I have been known to use a little butter here and there (I'm a cook!). I do like the zero percent yogurts, especially the 100 calorie Greek yogurts out there. I don't do artificial sweeteners or fillers, I eat real food. I am struggling with how to get fish oils in as I need them for arthritis pain, but cannot tolerate gel caps now,

When I used to diet (pre wls), I had my share of fat free plastic cheese, fat free mayo, and even low fat Peanut Butter. No more. I don't eat enuf of anything for it to make a difference. Plus I hear fat satiates u faster than the fat free version, meaning u eat less and be satisfied. Now, I do have 2% milk cuz I just don't like the taste of full fat milk. And fat free milk reminds me of breastmilk, it's so watery. And hubby won't drink 1% so I buy 2%. Its got like 8 calories more than skim milk. Whoop-dee-doo. So do u eat fat free/low fat or regular fat stuff? Why?

I buy regular "fat" stuff because I'm low carbing and the fat is good for that so I need the fat in the cheeses, it fills you up quicker. I usually always bought 2% because I hate whole milk. I don't drink milk but I used to have it in Cereal, hubs still buys it though for some reason. Anyway, I do buy diet stuff though like drinks and whatnot because I'm watching carb and sugar intake and I also don't like to drink my calories.

i agree with the statement already made that fat is generally replaced by sugar in 'fat free' products.

if you look at the sugars and carb contents of fat free things compared to regular, it's almost always higher.

my surgeon says that some things like regular eggs, mayo are ok, but recommends low fat milk, turkey sausage and other 'light' versions over fat-free for others.

for the most part, at the post-op point i will stick with regular versions of real foods over anything fat free and a few light versions of things just due to the saturated fats.

Great topic. When I first started after surgery I went "diet" and low fat everything. Now I don't do low fat anything. I discovered that when they take the fat out they increase the carbs.

I do go for sugar free and low carb, however. Low carb is my new lifestyle. I do eat carbs on occasion, but i would rather spend my carbs on something real that I really want. I prefer stevia, as it is a natural sweetener, but will have splenda on occasion if it is in something sugar free.< /p>

It depends...

cheese - I try to opt for 2% reduced fat as it doesn't taste much different and still send safe chemical wise.

I can't do artificial sweeteners. I can't stand the taste and some give me Migraines. So no sugar free stuff for me.

I can't do mayo as I have an allergy to egg yolk. So no choice there.

Usually most other things like dressings have msg in it so that's my deciding factor. Finding one without msg whether it's full fat or fat free I don't care.

Yogurt - again most reduced fat has some sort of artificial sweetener. So that's my limitation there. I think the Chobani has a low fat Greek yogurt that's not with artificial sweeteners.

I try to stay away from as much artificial stuff as I can manage, so that helps me determine if I'll go sugar free or fat free. I get plain 2% yogurt and mix in sugar free (sweetened with xylitol) jam. Full fat cheese, since if I'm going to eat cheese I will enjoy it (it's an occasional treat for me). mayo no longer tastes good to me, so I don't eat it. Real butter and ghee in small amounts.

Basically, I put very little restrictions on what I can have. My restrictions are all around how much I can have instead.

@@NMJG thank you so much. I just picked up a bottle of. Carlson's with lemon (had a coupon!) and hoping this does the trick -- like the tin man with creaky joints in need of oil....congratulations on your weight loss! Looks like you're doing beautifully.....

During the liquid part, the Jello and frozen stuff had sugar in it. I absolutely refuse to put splenda (aka phenalalanine and sucralose) and aspartame (which the fda has now renamed aminosweet). Too many problems associated with both sweeteners. Splenda is basically DDT. You eat it, you are ingesting chlorine. I figured that since I'm doing everything new and starting out like a baby would, why introduce toxins into my new body?

I've always drunk 1%. Skim is too much like milk flavored Water. I do have some regular fat. And I agree with others, the low fat stuff has sugar.

Now that I've have time to find some items that taste like sugar but do not effect the blood sugar I'm satisfied.

I do buy fat free and low fat greek yogurt. It has more Protein. Then I will add a sugar free jam made with xylitol or some other sweetener. I did look at the fat free mayos and found some had sucralose in it. I just won't go there. My long term health is more important. I got sleeved because I didn't want to be a fat, unhealthy old woman. What good would it do me to be a skinny unhealthy woman?
Plus there is now new research about animal fat and vegetable fats. After over 50 years of pushing us to use vegetable fats, science has determined that humans ingest and process animal fats better than vegetable fats without bad side effects. So, lard and bacon fat are suggested. Go figure. As with everything, moderation.

Besides, my personal opinion is having some fat in the diet could keep me from having gall bladder problems so many have after this surgery.

If anybody wants a list of sweeteners that do not effect your blood sugar and some products that use them, let me know and I'll send you a list.

I am mostly concerned with calories, so I guess I tend to choose the low-fat stuff more often. Fewer calories means I can eat more, right? :) I should add that I do use half and half in my coffee. That's 1 thing I won't mess with.

I don't count fat or calories, only Protein and sugar. As someone said, we eat so little so I try to make it count nutrition-wise, and enjoy it, too. My nut said to become a gourmet - eat good quality foods and learn to savor the flavors. So that is what I do. :-)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
