January's 2014 Bandsters Welcome!

Recommended Posts

I just figured it out- the gas is making me so bloated that I can't get down more than a couple sips. So relieved cause I was beginning to think it was my band. Even with walking and gas x, the bloating is so bad that I'm miserable. I have my husband and daughter on "back chop" duty and that's helping a lot.

This is post op day #5. Left shoulder gas pain gets way worse after eating anything. Better between meals, but take a bite of something and BAM! Has anyone else had this experience with left shoulder gas pain worsening after eating?

Hi, everyone. I had my band on 1/21 and besides discomfort of gas pain and a small amount of hunger I am doing well. I am very pleased so far and on the third of Feb. I will be allowed more than liquid. I am so looking forward to that. So thankful for all the wonderful experiences and ideas shared. This is a comfortable and helpful gift to have on hand. I don't feel Alone.

I am sitting here now 6 days post-op enjoying a little bit of heaven...a scrambled egg. Aaaah, to be in the mushies stage is wonderful. I feel like I've made it through to the "lite' side now.

I was banded on Jan. 13th. Since that time I have graduated up to regular foods. I never realized how much junk and food I ate before banding until these last couple of weeks. It amazes me how many times a day I have to decline food that is offered to me or is just out and available for anyone to take. What amazes me more is how in the past I took advantage of most of those opportunities. We went to dinner tonight and I had a few different foods and then later to Tar get'. At the store one of the kids wanted a snack and got a pretzel, I got a drink. She offered tastes of the pretzel to me three times, all of which I declined and it was not a big deal. Then when we got home one of the other kids insisted I have a piece of chocolate even though I declined. I have to say I am sooooo proud of myself. In the past not only would I have had a snack with the kids, I would have had my own candy bar. Instead I have a drink and my yummy Icebreaker gums in grape, lemon, and strawberry smoothie. They are soooo good and just as satisfying as the junk food. When the flavor starts to dwindle away if my craving for a snack hasn't passed I pop a couple new pieces in. I get the satisfaction of the chewing and the great flavor. Whatever it Takes!!

Congrats to all the new banders! We are on a journey of self discovery!

Please keep sharing for all of us that are desperate to do well. I love gum and can not wait to get mine. This is such an exciting journey we are on. So glad we are all together.

Hello all, I'm two days post operation and feel a little sore but getting better every day. The doctor did two surgeries on me; the band and then he pleaded my stomach or placated it. He said that it would help to keep me from feeling hungry. So far he was right, I'm able to eat broth and Italian Ice and those types of things but I do get full quickly. The gas pains suck for the most part, but I have been getting a little bit better on that front. Yesterday, after coming home from the hospital, I didn't rest as much as I should have. That wiped me out! Today I'm going to take it much easier.

Overall, I'm just happy to be on the side of the surgery date, and I'm looking forward to starting my new life.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
