More Confused Than Before

Hi everyone, so I went to my seminar yesterday. While it was very informative I feel more confused. :( I knew when I went in if I decided to have the surgery I would want the sleeve but now I'm not sure. Dr. Mo was saying that diabetic do better with the gastric bypass in terms of their diabetes being resolved. He also said that if you have reflux it is recommended that you do not have the sleeve. I really hadn't thought about considering the bypass because I simply did not want one. My sister had a bypass and she still has diabetes. Are there and diabetic or GERD sufferers that have any advice on their experience post surgery? I'd love to hear if if you want to share. I have decided to at least go in for the initial consultation. Hope everyone has a good night. God bless.

I am a 20+ year Type 2 diabetic. Before my sleeve surgery my A1C was 10.7 (I was having lots of food funerals). It's been 5 months since my surgery, I am down 58 lbs, and my doctor called me a couple of days ago to tell me my A1C was now 6.2! She was so thrilled!

I had a bit of GERD before my surgery. But I have none now. Since I don't eat bread or fried foods anymore, and I can't overeat anymore, that helps.

I never for one minute considered having a gastric bypass. Too many complications, and too many people gain their weight back. If you are not comfortable with your doctor's opinion, find another doctor.

I haven't taken any diabetes medicine since surgery. Day of surgery my A1C was 10.4, at my last appt. my A1C was 5.6, 5.4 is considered normal. My doctor was thrilled and said by next visit I will be below the normal limit. I had GERD before surgery and they repaired my hiatel hernia during surgery. I do take previcid 2x a day and feel so much better than before.

I'm only 3 weeks out, but I was diagnosed with severe GERD and Barrett's esophagus. I was told that lap band was a bad choice for me, which is good because I wanted the VGS anyhow. Since surgery , my GERD has been gone- not diminished - gone. I have had zero issues with it. My starting weight was 234 and the GERD was used as my comorbidity for insurance purposes ( I didn't have any others) . This is just my experience, good luck with your decision .

I had my surgery in early July. I have been off my diabetes meds since the surgery, and my blood sugar has consistently been pretty normal - around 80-90 before meals and generally under 150 a couple of hours post-meal (for example, tonight's post-dinner reading was 131). I'm due for my regular testing, so we'll see what the results look like for that!

At this point, I even have the occasional small serving of whole-wheat Pasta, steel cut oatmeal, brown rice or whole-grain bread with no ill effects. I've also had small bites of my husband's dessert, or a small piece of chocolate once a week or so, as long as I've also had enough Protein and gotten a reasonable amount of produce in.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
