December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Alright December Sleevers, I'm hoping that this title brings more people in so we can follow and encourage each other through our journeys.

I am 40. I'm 5'4" and about 308 right now. I'd like to get to a healthy BMI which would be around 145. I'm hoping for a December 4th or 5th date with Dr. William Johnson.

Everyone introduce yourselves!

I was sleeved on December 20th. I've been home since the 23rd and am getting my strength back more and more every day. I've lost a total of 30lbs since I started the pre-op liquid diet; 17 lbs since I was sleeved and a total of 67lbs since I began this journey. So excited to finally be on this side of being sleeved and can't wait to see what my future holds in store for me.

Question: is anyone else having a hard time getting all their protien and a total of 64 oz fluid in every day? (I know the shakes count as some of the required fluids but I can't get anywhere near 64 oz of anything in in a day) I was excited today for the sad fact that I was able to drink an entire protien shake (only took 6 hours to drink one 14oz shake, ugh) but after geting that down I don't have room for water or crystal light. Is this normal this early in my journey? Also, I have a TON of food allergies and have unfortunately figured out that I'm allergic to the powdered protien mixes so I can't mix unflavored protien into my water/crystal light. Any ideas?

I was sleeved on dec12 and still struggling to get in minimum 50g protein and 48oz water per my NUT

On a good day I'm probably getting in around 300 calories -- 30g protein and 32 oz water

Incredibly weak these days too; lost about 25lbs in 3 weeks since surgery

Didn't think 3 weeks out would look like this but it should get better

I had hiatal hernia repair same time so I believe that is my greatest challenge ... I actually broke down and cried while on the phone with my NUT the other day; it hurt so bad to sip anything

Im doing a bit better with sipping now due to the carafate solution my surgeon prescribed me but still not easy -- I'm thankful for the tiny progressions

Best wishes to you!!

I hope you continue to feel better each day, Sandi. I have heard many say that the additional hiatal hernia repair was more painful. Are you able to get any liquid vitamins in to help with weakness? What about some Gatorade type of drink mixed with your water? I did that the first week as I was afraid of becoming dehydraded. Have you tried any of the isopure drinks? Or the unjury chicken broth? I mixed some Better Than Bouillon chicken paste into the Unjury chicken and it was good. Maybe having something warm might be easier?

Hang in there!!

Sorry you are having a hard time with your protein. How much longer until you can have soft foods?

Have you tried any of the ready to drink Isopure drinks? I've heard you can buy them at GNC to try the flavors before buying bigger packs online. Maybe thinner drinks like that would help?

I know you said you can't have powders, but I know when I switched from ready to drink premier protein drinks to unjury chocolate powder, the unjury are much thinner and I was able to drink it pretty quickly.

Hang in there and keep sipping! I'm 7 days ahead of you and can drink water easily but I still only get 48 ounces in. It's a full time job!

Ugh..why am I putting food in my mouth. .chewing it then spitting it out..I really need to pull it together .. took my kids to cici's pizza..got some soup..which was ok..but then saw my kids food...I just couldn't help it..:( I know it would get stuck if I swallowed ...I know this could be very bad if I continue to do this.

Hello my family:). Just wanted to update: I'm still n hospital, I feel rather well but these esophageal spasms are still givin me issues. As I said the second swallow test was.basically inconclusive but the surgeon said it looked good enuff for him, however; until I'm 24 hrs spasm free, he still won't let me eat or drink:( so today is day 4, npo. Then he said, we just have to b patient bc it will improve, so I have to stay here until Monday mornin:( my 9 yr old is alredy upset when she has to lv me nd she doesn't evn know about Monday yet. Catheter n heart monitor removed so that's good. I thank God that I'm not evn hungry or head hungry, I'm just rdy to get up n moving forward in a positive way. I've been reading about how u all are and praying every night for yall. Take care and hopefully I'll have bttr news for yall. XOXO my friends keep up the awesomeness of ur journeys, I'm proud of you all!!!!

Hi Deez! I hope your spasms have slowed down! I'm sorry you're stuck in the hospital, but I tell you, I wish I could have stayed more than one night! I know you have a family to get back to, though! Glad the cath and heart monitor are removed. Are you able to get up and walk around? I slept pretty well but did find myself getting up to use the restroom about every hour due to the IVs.

Thankful you're not experiencing any hunger (in your head or tummy!) as I'm sure that would be even more difficult!

Hopefully by the time you get home, you won't even need any pain meds! You'll be so far along by then!

Continue being your usual positive self! So many people pulling for you on this side!

Shrug it off and don't do it again! Maybe try to steer clear of those places. I know it would be hard for me not to get some Cici's buffalo chicken pizza!

You know what all that stuff tastes like and one day, you can have it again!

Are you on any type of foods yet? If not, then I would fill up on a protein shake before taking the kids to get their food.

You can do this!

First, I'm sorry some are struggling through right now. I pray you feel better soon!

First week check up today (10 days post op). I'm down 8 lbs post post. Feeling awesome. Getting my water and protein in. I asked about eating crab (it's all I can think about!) and the nut moved me on to soft foods! I had chili at Wendy's as my first meal. I finished half a small and it was very satisfying!

I will be revising my weight loss goals as well, as the nut evaluated my lean body mass at 130lbs (I'm 5'6") so 162.5 seems like a reasonable goal (25% body fat). I think I'll round it down to 160lbs (instead of 154, my current goal) and have a couple pounds wiggle room.

Doc said I can remove the surgical glue. I'm so pleased with how my incisions are healing! Doc cleared me for basically whatever I want/need.

ME: Can I work out and lift weights?

Doc: Sure!

ME: Can I go back to work?

Doc: Sure! When would you like to go back?

ME: All done the blood thinner shots doc?

Doc:Yep!

I guess tomorrow will be a down day though, school is canceled on account of snow. I'm not walking outside or driving to the gym I think...unless I can get some crab legs while I am out!

What a number for December! Hope all of you folks do well, I'm pulling for you!

Hi! I was sleeved 12/26 and feeling pretty good.

Calls to ask the NUT a question and doc answered the phone himself.

Me: Doc, can I have coffee?

Doc: What kind?
Me: The good stuff!

Doc Hazelnut?
Me: Sure, as long as it has caffeine!

Doc: Sure. Just remember it's a diuretic and doesn't count toward your fluid intake. Be mindful of the cream and sweetners you use.

Thank the Lord and Dr. Neff!

Finally a doc that got it right. Coffee does NOT cause dehydration, it just doesn't add anything, the caffeine cancels out the water intake. So don't count it.

Really don't like those isopure clear drinks and I was hoping they would be my saving grace

My doc office doesn't recommend Gatorade or powerades or anything else similar .. Simply water and protein shakes, broth, pops tea and jello, yogurt -- but can't really tolerate Much even water and warm tea creates discomfort after a while ... Takes me about 1.5+hours to finish 9oz of protein shake and 3.5 hours to get down 16oz of water

I think of and miss real food but I'm nervous about the pain it will cause when mushy foods stage starts next week -- it's a very slow progress of returning to normalcy for me and I'm 22 days out

I was a ball of energy before this surgery with no co morbidities at all and I'm 31 yrs old so my slow recovery is a bit of a shock

I take and tolerate chewable vitamins but doubt they are doing much for me

I'll continue to pray! Thanks for your concern and suggestions

Hope all is well with you!

Thanks all of u for ur thots and prayers! As of now, the doc says npo still bc of spasms:'( day 5 n still nothing to eat or drink. I too had a hernia repaired and as far as pain from those sites, nothing. I asked doc was I considered a statistic bc I'm sad about what may be my future. He says success but I say noway. I'm trying to stay positive around my family but I cried today bc doc said if I'm not better, spasms, by Monday, I'm going on i.v. nutrition! I'm just bummed out now. I tried finally helping myself and now I feel I Shuda left well enough alone. Ik God will get me over this mountain but right now its difficult to sit all day wo at least a sliver of ice. The mercy part of it all is that I'm not hungry either way, thank God, just losing patience. Anyways I pray that u all are continuing being successful n healthy. I pray that I too will start doing better. Unless things change, Lord willing, I'll check bck in on monday. God bless n gn all:)
