Sooo....I have a question for all of my sleever buddies, who start their pre-op diets AFTER November 28th.

Thanksgiving!

I have worked really hard to lose the weight that I have lost, and I am truly concerned with the holiday. Let me give you some background. I will be traveling to visit my family for a week. I will be staying with family, and at the mercy of the food that either they have, or wherever we eat out...since this is a 'vacation' for me, and it's a week, the family all tends to eat out a lot...not mentioning the Thanksgiving day feast....where again, I will be at the mercy of all of the tasty 'vittles' that will be brought from about 30 different people.

I do well when I am in my 'controlled' environment where I don't have delicious pumpkin bread or pumpkin pie (and we usually Celebrate my birthday as well, so there will be birthday cake), so I am worried that I will undo lots of the progress I have made so far. I should also mention that no one in my family knows that I am having the surgery (for a number of reasons I won't go into here).

So, I'm just wondering how you all are going to 'weather' the Thanksgiving holiday? I rescheduled my surgery from the original date of December 5 to the 11th so that I wouldn't have to start the liquid diet while I was traveling...there would have been no way I could do that while on vacation.

Looking for any helpful tips/advice.

Only thing I would suggest would be to enjoy Thanksgiving day, have some cake for your birthday and then strictly low carb it the rest of the time andwatch your empty calories with sodas.

December 9th!!!! I had the option to go in October but life and schedule didn't allow. But I'm just glad to have it scheduled and start the new year with a new me!!!! I'm 38 5'5 and currently 270. I start my two week liquid on Nov 25th, so no turkey and yams for this chick! I'm ok with it though...I decided to host an early Thanksgiving and have already told my family I will be a no show on turkey day. I comb through this web site every day and can't believe I'm finally starting this journey.

I have always had weight issues and have wanted wls forever but never had insurance that would cover it. Now I work for a local hospital and it's covered and I had a relatively painless process into all this. I got luck and was able to use most of my pre-testing from a recent gallbladder removal to satisfy my surgeon and ins. All I have left is the the labs the day before Thanksgiving and then the big day on Monday Dec 9th....oh yeah and I'm getting married October 26th!!!! New Year, new partner and new life! WATCH OUT 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My date is also the 9th ..........

Thanks for the advice Atlanta...I've been really good about already cutting out all of the soda, working hard on focusing only on drinking Water (and of course not drinking during meals). My food issue has always been 'quantity' which worries me that I might fall back into those bad habits. A little scary to say the least. :)

Big ups to all the holiday season sleevers!

Going through this whole process, makes one realize just how much society is food-focused. I finally told my best friend today about my date (she too is overweight and knew I was thinking about it but didn't take me serious) - all she said was "are you nuts? you're not going to be able to eat all the holiday goodies!"... and to that I said "hooray!" She just couldn't fathom the idea of giving up all the gorging on holiday food.< /p>

I know some people here will want to have a little binge before their surgery, have a last pigout on some favorite or no-no foods, etc. Me, I'm preparing now both mentally and physically by already cutting way back, eating right, and doing the high-protein thing (I've done this many times before on attempts to lose weight but always gained it back!). Knowing that I'm all in with an irreversible procedure now, easing into the pre-op liquid diet this way would be much more helpful than calorie cold-turkey I think.

How is everyone else tackling this?

I'm not going to miss the food fest. And, I'm looking forward to saving a ton of money at the supermarket going forward!

Happy Sleevemas to all the December folks!! :)

I've made changes along the way as well. Gave up caffeine and sugar In August or September ( I can't remember exactly) ,started taking a High Potency Multi Vitamin back in the summer and gave up soda. I started walking and using my elliptical machine 3-4 times a week.

I have had a few of my favorite food items like green chile pork burritos and Mexican rice. That's OVER and done with! I'm focused now and mentally prepared and in the right mind set for this journey.

I agree with AtlantaRed...low carb will be the way to go after Thanksgiving.

This is SO me too MnWin. I like large quantities of food.

Um, hello...I'm Blondiee and I'm a food addict. Going through my Options classes really made me realize this.

It felt good to put that out in the universe so it can no longer control me. :)

Well my fellow sleever, my advice, eat in moderation. Ik that sounds a lil obvious but here is your chance, in a non controlled environment, to prove to YOURSELF that even b4 the sleeve, you can b in control of portions as well as how n what to eat. Bc remember, the sleeve is just a tool and altho it won't physically allow us to overeat( wo repercussions) we still have to make the right choices of the what, when n how of eating. Enjoy yourself, yes, but not to the point that u just feel horrible afterwards. U can indulge but instead of the huge plate we are use too, half it, and then go bck later for something different. Instead of one huge meal, make mini meals, just like we will have to do when sleeved. You have a week to get it all in and if u eat small meals 3-5 times that day, then ull enjoy just like everyone else will. But be honest about the portions of the mini meals. Ull do gr8!, just njoy the holiday and don't let the food b the main focus. Like u said, uve worked hard for the weight uve lost so far. And if u gain some weight bck by doing the mini meals, at least UK u did the right thing in trying. Gl my friend and happy Holidays:))

Excellent advice friends! I appreciate that so much. Helps me feel more confident...I can make really good choices now, and moderate my eating really well here, but again, that is a controlled environment where I am making the food, and I am making the choices as to what to serve...this WILL be a great test because I won't have any control over what is served, and...let's face it...it IS Thanksgiving...the land of starches and carbs.

I've had a good long discussion with my husband as well, and he will be there to help me and cheer me on through the really tough moments!

Made it through my executive board management lunch meeting today!! Phew! Tons of food all around. There was a fantastic spread of all the wrong kinds of food for me! But there was big tossed salad, so I had some with light dressing. Gosh there was 3 trays of desserts! I only had a cup of hot tea for dessert. Of course, everyone looked at me and said, you're really serious about this surgery and pre-op stuff, huh? I said yep. So go ahead and enjoy your treats, I'm fine.

Everyone just laughed and said, you're doing the right thing, we support you. It's nice to have support all around me, at work, at home and at play. I haven't had anyone doubt it or bad mouth the surgery yet.

Okay day 2 of pre-op almost over. I'm feeling pretty strong about sailing through this.. My sister is already making special arrangements for me for Thanksgiving. Just Love HER!

I have been off the soda for over a year not but sugar is so hard. How did you do it. I find that when I am stressed I want sugar more. Then caffeine I love me some caffeine like coffee not much else and I do go with sugar free sweetners but it is still sweet.

Day 1 of my pre-op diet wasn't bad. I expected it to be much worse.

I'm really looking forward to the pounds falling off me - both pre-op and post-op.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
