post surgical wasting or atrophy?

Recommended Posts

had my pre surgery seminar wed, we were given protien, Water, bowel, Vitamin goals. my lingering question is even if i manage to hit my Protein goals will i lose an inordinate aount of lean body mass in the 3 weeks after surgery? i understand in normal circumstances the general consensus is weight loss is 75% fat and 25% lean mass.

if you followed your lbm/fat percentages what did you notice about your percentages in the first 3-4 weeks? were you able to hit your Protein goals?

i swim and lift regularly as well as walking alot, i hate giving up lbm, i know it's gonna happen just don't like it.

The first couple weeks, I didn't come anywhere close to my Protein goals.

Post surgical wasting and atrophy aren't something to worry about right after Lap Band surgery. The body naturally wants to use fat before muscle because it's a much easier source of fuel. Plus, let's be honest, how many obese people do you know that actually monitored their Protein intake before surgery (not including any preop diet)? Chances are good their bodies are already used to sustaining on far less than ideal nutrition.

If once you've progressed back to solid foods you're getting your daily protein goal and exercising, you have nothing to worry about.

Every patient is different. If you have a lot of swelling from surgery it can be difficult to consume enough Protein to maintain your current body mass. I never had a problem with consuming anything from the day after surgery and on.

As was explained to me, the first few weeks post op are for healing, and not for losing weight.

As part of my pre op requirements, I met with a specialist in exercise who was on staff with my surgeon. They determined my percentage of excess fat and current muscle mass. They were able to tell me my daily protein goal, and how much exercise time to preserve my muscle mass and ensure that any loss of weight would be excess fat an not

muscle.

My take away was that if you get your protein and continue to exercise, you will lose fat, not muscle. Initially you likely will not meet you protein goal or be able to exercise at your pre op level. This is just temporary, and you will be back on track.

Every one is different. It would be a good idea to discuss this concern with your surgeon.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
