I am not banded yet but am in the process. I just read your post and had to tell you that is exactly what my surgeon told me at the seminar and at my consult. Him and the head nurse both said 'if you like sweets, this is not the surgery for you and you should consider the rouxenY. My friend that is also trying to get surgery was totally set for the lap band until we went to this and had our consults. For her that would be a major problem because she loves her sweets but for me I rarely eat them now so I hope I will suceed with the band. My friend is now going for the rouxen Y because she loves her sweets to much.

Sorry to hear you are not doing well with your band. Remember each day is a new day.

Hi Jackie,

I must disagree, I love love sweets I would say Im addicted to it and I made the band work, its all about your determination, really.I eat sweets icecream (a pint easily) but not everyday I would say ice cream like once a month and the next day I excercise and watch what I eat. I would even say I eat sweets on regular basis almost everyday, but just till 2 p.m. once you start losing and see the changes you will not want to gain it back and you will be careful of what you eat.I work my butt off but its worth it!

Yes there might be people for whom the band doesnt work due to medical complications but most of us can make it work!

Good luck to everyone!

YESSSSSSSSs I would do it again in a heartbeat!:clap2:

What is rouxenY? I haven't had my first visit to the doctors yet. It's coming up on June 7th. I'd like to know what the differences are. Why would sweets be a problem? I'm not a big sweet eater, thankfully, but I would occasionally like to have some. What are some of the side effects people have? Thanks! Dianne

That's a gastric bypass procedure, not associated with the lap band at all.

Sweets are not a problem for lap banders....although they aren't recommended either! :)

Thanks for the info eficka. I will tell my friend that was at that the seminar totally set to have the lap band and then when she heard this she was undecided and thinks that she should/has to have the rouxenY because she loves sweets. Don't get me wrong I like my sweets to sometimes but even now prebanded I eat them maybe 1 time a week.

Thank you all for all your words of wisdom. This forum really helps the prebanded and banded people. I am so happy I found this sight before I am banded. I have learned so much and I love sharing all my info that I learn with my family hoping that maybe that will help them understand the band a little better also. :)

It should help you keep it off for the surgery leaves you with a much smaller stomach. You simply cannot not eat very much without feeling full. The trick is to eat a healthy diet, to make sure you are taking in sufficient Protein and fresh veg/fruit. And you will need fibre and a full array of Vitamins and minerals. Congratulations on your weight loss, by the way.:o

id do it again in a heartbeat. Id lost over 90 lbs before twice in my life prior to the band, each time with medication, but it always came back and then some. I got to apoint where dispite diet i was gaining and continue to gain. Excercise only slowed the process down. Now look! fifty five lbs down and still going! i could not have done this on my own.

i even had to answer this question for real after the leak and my heart didnt even have time to beat between the end of the question and my unconditional YES absolutely.

I voted no. Mainly because I have not seen much weight loss, have felt terrible pain from being overfilled, can not eat the things I am used to (even the healthy stuff), crap goes right thru, and my whole life has changed for nothing. I still buy the Vitamin appetite control things, my cravings/hunger is still there, I apparently can eat enough to stretch my pouch, and have to worry about every little thing now. Eating out is a pain, eating in front of co-workers is a chore, and I hate the way I feel about myself even more. Being a lap band failure is worse than being a regular old failure. At least when I was a regular old failure, I could eat broccoli and bread when I wanted to. Or, salad... or nuts... or drink a coke... or .... well you get the point.

And don't get me started about the questions from others. "so, how are you doing? How much have you lost?" Or the look I get from my DH when I eat something I am "not suppose" to.

This TOOL works for some, but has not worked for me. This was my last ditch effort and I still have the same "head issues" and physical issues such as carb cravings. It will not work if you are a sweet eater.<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Ditto, ditto, ditto! I could have written this myself. I'm not blaming the band, and perhaps I am too tight, I'm not sure, but I too have all of the same issues/problems you are. The band is so fickle, sometimes I'm afraid to eat. What's fine one day, chokes me the next. My weight still goes up and down like a yo yo and now I am probably looking at an umbilical hernia repair. If they have to unfill the band, maybe it's for the best, I can start over again when the surgery is all healed. I am also to blame, I don't excersise. But I am tired of choking on the good stuff and then resorting to something soft to comfort myself and squash the hunger. It's definitely not easy, takes a lot of work, but that's just like anything else in life. I do blame myself though, as I suffer from depressiona and anxiety and that get in the way of my success as well. Anyway, I just thought I would chime in here.

I'm only a little over 7 weeks out from surgery, but yes, I would do it again. So far it's worked very well for me.

No, absolutely not. I would NEVER do this again. I have been nothing but sick for almost 10mos. I throw up constantly. I chew, chew, chew, I don't eat a lot of foods anymore and still I throw up at least once a day, usually more.

For the past week I have been throwing up everything. Yesterday I started throwing up liquids. I'll be calling the surgeons office first thing in the morning and once I get in to see him, I'll be setting up a surgery to remove it.

It seemed a godsend at first, losing and feeling great, but now, I HATE THIS THING. It's a sad, sad day when I'd rather be fat than deal with this.

It took me two years of listening to everyone onthis site to decide to do it. My only regret is that I waited the two years. I should have done it sooner. I love my band , it keeps me in line. You do need to eat smartly.

Stick with ie, work with it , it does work.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
