Yes. Of course. I would regret not getting it. And I'm sick in bed because of it! Well, because of the my rapid initial weight loss which causesd an evil gall bladder...

As far as sweets go, I adore sweets. Salty Snacks aren't my thing. Give me chocolate! But I have found my hunger levels so much reduced and so forth that I am doing fine with not eating too many. Plus I read a study shortly before I was banded saying people who like sweets do just as well. Obviously there are times when I have to confront head hunger and then I remind myself that if I really want something sweet I can have a couple hundred calories worth tomorrow or the day after that.

What is RNY? I'm very new. Can you tell? Sorry. I just don't want to go the wrong route with this and I would love to be able to go to my first visit prepared. Thanks!

RNY is just another name for gastric bypass surgery. It's one type; there are a couple of different bypass surgeries, I gather.

And in case I hadn't mentioned it before, I AM doing it again! My band was removed due to slippage and I am getting a new, improved model on June 4th. I can't wait!!

First -- Alexandra, good luck with the upcoming surgery, I hope you have better luck with the new and improved band!

Second -- Yes, I would do it again too. I am five months out from my surgery date and have lost 42 pounds so far. Even with the negatives (no restriction postop and 3 weeks of Bandster hell!, no restriction after first fill or much after second fill, PBing, sliming, vomiting, eating too fast and wow, the pain that that involves!) I would still do it again because.. . . . . I would still be very unhealthy at 258 pounds with diabetes, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, joint pain, arthritis and cardiac issues just to name a few.

Without the band I would not be diabetes and insulin free, back in a normal blood pressure range and having much less pain on a daily basis. The few negatives that you run into, in my opinion, do not nearly outweigh the benefits of having the surgery and being healthier. Not to mention just feeling better about myself because my size 26's now fall off and I'm wearing clothes I haven't fit into for 10 years but I kept in the hopes that "one day" I could get into them again. So, yes, for me, I would do it again in a heartbeat! :(

just a quick reply about the "sweets" post

I love sweets, and always have. But after I got my band and followed the diet per doctor, liquids, mushies, etc...I never got a chance to eat sweets during that time, which ended up making me not crave it as much anymore. I eat sweets occasionally now, a piece of chocolate here or there, but if I end eating a whole slice of cake or something (which I can't even do), I get super hyper, then crash and burn (like a child). I hate the feeling of it. And I know eating a diet full of sweets isn't going to get me to my goal. I'm not perfect, and I still think I can eat things that I can't, which I then get sick from. But I try to remind myself that this is a life change--I had surgery to help me through--and I try to control what I eat. If I want chocolate, I'll have it. But only a serving of it. Before I would raid the candy aisle for whatever was there and eat a ton of it all in one sitting. I couldn't do that now if I tried!

Theres one other thing that I think has helped me out. I found these Calcium supplements called Adora and they are these 500mg Calcium supplements in a disk shape and they are milk chocolate, and actually taste like regular milk chocolate. I take two a day and they are pretty sweet, so for the most part, that by itself will help curb the craving.

ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY!!!

i have never been able to stick with a diet long enought to lose 98 pounds. i am still about 113 pounds from goal so i have a LONG way to go still, but i know the band will help.

i, too, LOVE sweets. pre-band, my 'lunch' (or post-lunch) would be about 20+ mini reeses Peanut Butter cups ... every day (gee, wonder where the 402 pounds came from). i agree with JMCAMBRA, off the sweets for pre and post op diets helped a lot with the sugar cravings. i do have something probably once a week and if i am craving more, i look at my before/current picture and that usually keeps me away from the stuff i dont need to be eating.

I am not a sweet eater, I only crave sweets if I've had an especially large or salty or carbed-out meal. Other than that, give me some fat and Protein please. I love nuts! Big nut eater. I am. I admit it.

lol

HELL YES I'D DO IT AGAIN!!!

I've had a pretty rocky road, but I'm so happy I did it. I feel so much better physically and emotionally. I HAVE self-esteem! Never had that before. I can go to restaurants and not worry about fitting in the booth. I can sit in a chair with arm rests and not worry about getting out. I can put on shoes with out holding my breath. I can sit in the floor and play with my son and the dogs, and I can get back up. All this wonderful stuff I can do and I'm only down 60lbs. Just think of the things I will be able to do when I reach my goal!!!

I am a recovering Sweet-a-holic. I used to eat sweets from sun up to sun down. I still crave it all day, but now that I have control, I allow myself one sugary-sweet a day. Not a bag of candy... A piece of hard candy, or A small piece of chocolate. The band does not change our heads (though I wish it did 'cause I have my fare share of demons in there) but it does give us power over our hunger. I know I'd loose the weight faster if I totally gave up sugar but that's not for me 'cause I've tried. I end up obsessing over it and eating crap I really shouldn't have and in quantities that are shameful...chocolate slips right through. So I don't think it's not for the weak-in-sweets, you just have to do your own soul searching and come to a truce with your demon.

I am so happy with the results of my band. Yesterday I tried on two pairs of pants which I had grown too fat to wear and I found that I could pull them off without undoing them!

Nope! Just go to phenforum.com and make one. It's easier than ticker factory (for me anyway). Good luck, and by the way, when you get to the end to copy & paste just copy the ticker part or else you'll get a bunch of phen forum advertisement crap.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
