OMG October 2013 Post-ops

Recommended Posts

You may be lactose intolerant. Happened to me after surgery. Had horrible diarrhea and gas pain. Switched to lactose free milk in my Protein shakes. Everything was better.

I am lactose intolerant too and I do unsweetened almond milk... So good!!

I had my surgery October 23, so I'm currently 9 days post op. Feel great (other than still being a bit weak/tired) but I'm hungry ALL the time!! The Nut said we wouldnt have any hunger so I'm perplexed!

Also, I can eat up to a cup of cream Soup or a whole yogurt at regular rate & have no probs. Have even gulped my Protein Shake (by accident, wasn't paying attention) & nothing happened.

I dont go back to hospital til end of Nov

Surgery on 30th. Lots of diarrhea today and rumbling abdomen. This normal? I am only doing clears for first two weeks per doctor. No Protein Shakes or supplements. Does this sound like what you have done?

Ya, I think its normal. Its only been a few days. Have you had your first BM yet?

Remember, even though you're only putting in clear fluids, you've got a baby stomach & a whole new digestion system. Think of how much newborn's bellies gurgle lol.

Plus your body is still detoxing from the anesthesia & pain meds

The BMs and rumbling are pretty normal I think. Each clinic has its own protocol. Mine had me on puréed food for the first four weeks. I'm on "soft foods" now. However, I've seen many folks on here who did Clear Liquids first.

Welcome to the losers bench!

I have had no trouble drinking but very careful not to gulp. If your intake is greater than what it should be perhaps try and bring your apt with the hospital forward or even call your doctor.

I saw my nutritionist yesterday and I finally graduated to "normal" foods.. She said the only thing to wait 2 more weeks on were salads and raw vegetables/fruits with a skin.. Otherwise, I can try whatever now.. Tonight I had some rotisserie checking with some steamed broccoli.. It was so nice to chew food.. I'm down 26lbs in just over 4 weeks.. I still have a real hard time eating the required Protein and drinking enough Water, but to be honest, I never did it with my band either.. But I will keep trying.. Good luck everyone..

I also had my surgery on the 29th. And i was doing great till yesterday....i have injured myself. While trying to get up and down from my couch. A sharp pain shot out from my belly button across my lower abdomen. Now every time i bend to sit or get up it happens. I think i have either pulled a muscle or herniated myself. I am back to bed with lots of pillows and such. Till my 1 week appointment. I still get up and walk around. I just cant sit on lower furniture and my bed is high.

I am 6 weeks post op and I am having problems with my appetite & food. I think that I want a certain food but when I do get it I realize that I don't want it. I am currently working on getting my Protein in. Having trouble eating 6 small meals a day. Can barely eat 2 oz during meal time. Any suggestions.

I felt the same way at your stage. I would buy foods that I wanted to eat, take a bite, and... ick ... throw it away. I threw away a LOT of food back then. Sometimes I still do. Your tastes change. The amount you can eat changes too. At five months I can eat a whole yogurt, or 3/4 cup chili, 2-3 ounces of Protein (depending on what it is - poultry makes me sick). Supplement your meals w/a Protein shake if you are having trouble meeting protein goals. I wasn't very good at getting all my protein until I started logging my food (at around three months). 'Guesstimating' doesn't work for me. Logging shows me exactly where I stand and if I come up short I add a shake or a Greek yogurt in the evening to boost me over the top. Adding a little unflavored Protein powder to whatever you are eating helps too. Someone mentioned months ago that he put a single scoop of unflavored protein in a small bowl and sprinkled a little on everything he ate throughout the day. That would add about 25gr to your daily protein and a little wouldn't affect the taste much.

Try to make every bite count. Look for the highest protein foods to get the biggest bang for your buck. It takes time but you'll get there. :-)

Some favorite foods with Protein are:

*Turkey chili w/beans (I also mix in refried beans)

*Geek yogurt

*Turkey meatballs w/extra sauce

*Pea Soup w/ham

*Tilapia

*Chowder (I know, not much Protein but good and you can add a little unflavored protein to it)

*Mini burger patty w/swiss and guacamole

*Think thin bites (small Protein Bar - I can eat a whole one of this size)

*Ostrim ostrich and beef stick - teriyaki flavor

*Single serve Cracker Barrel cheeses

*Lentil crackers w/spicy hummus (crackers made from Beans and have 5gr protein - Walmart)

*Lentil crackers w/natural peanut or almond butter

My inner two year old is having tantrums and turning me into a wreck.

I'm only one week post op and thought I was really prepared for this emotionally, boy was I naive! I just want to nibble something savory and the thought of Jello or popsicles make me want to punch someone.

I dreamed about refried Beans last night and seeing my husband eat his Breakfast of eggs and biscuits and gravy sent me to the other room with chicken broth and tears in my eyes.

Why did I have to let myself get into the position where surgery was the smartest option?

I'm sorry, I just needed to vent my tantrum.

Carry on.

Desperately trying not to freak out, get down or be negative....but today I'm 2 weeks out and I've only lost 4 lbs

Im following my nuts plan to the letter, drinking, walking, logging food and I've lost less weight in 2 weeks than when I used to diet before RNY.

Common sense tells me by body will be in shock and it will eventually come off.. but gee...that doesn't calm that voice in my head screaming " See? You're going to be the person surgery doesn't work for".

Just venting. Thanks

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
