Hi Tina, welcome to the site. I'm a big girl too but lost almost half of my weight,so I guess I'm more a medium-sized girl ( I was 386 the day of my surgery &now I'm down to 284lbs), to answer some of your concerns, I started driving about, 6wks after surgery, it took at least another month before I did any kind of shopping, but I also have chronic Rheumatoid arthritis, I actually am going to see an orthopedic surgeon because I need to have both knees replaced.

I too had/have a problem with foods in the beginning it was horrible, nothing stayed down,& everything tasted like dirt, it has gotten much better, I know now what will trigger me getting sick, if I eat to fast which is eating normally as far as I'm concerned, but those were the old days, I still struggle with not being able to drink while I'm eating & waiting 30minutes after, it kills me, but I hate puking more than anything. I just joined a gym today because I'm not losing weight as fast as I was &I'm terrified of gaining any weight back.

I would love to email you I have no girl friends, just my husband & I have 3 sons only 2 are home though, when I find my cell I'll gladly give you my number so we can text back & forth. I'm going through some insomnia right now, so I'm up all hours of the night, &I check in on this site frequently. There is a way to send private messages on this site but if you want I'll give you my regular e mail address.

Ok I've rambled on long enough, I look forward to becoming friends,

Peace,

Mary

Everyone heals differently, some people have complications and some do not. I think a lot of it depends on your surgeon, your prep for surgery and how healthy you are. #1 chose a surgeon that is board certified and has a few hundred surgeries under his belt. Do your research, learn everything you can. You are asking some great questions by the way. Hopefully I can answer some for you. I was back to work in one week, I drove the 4th day after surgery, and was cleared to do any exercise I wanted after 3 weeks. I am 14 months post op and feel fantastic I started at 216 and now I am 163, I have a good 20 to lose but I am happy where I am at right now. I followed my surgeon's orders, I ate what I was suppose to eat, when I was suppose to eat it and had the amount I was suppose to have, no more, no less. I sailed thru the healing process, I had no staples or sutures, just steri-strips to hold the incision closed. I had a full complete blood work done at 6 months and at 1 year. Everything was perfect, I'm 54 and my Mom had osteoperosis (sp) and I too was worried that I would not get enough calcium...but I do.

I am sure there are some people that can tell you horror stories as well, but I can only tell you how well I did and what I did to get be well.

You found a great group here for support. :)

BBdoodle is correct, we are all individuals and our bodies react differently to different things. Your doctor and care program before and after are so important, so make sure you do your research. The only one going to take care of #1 is #1 (yourself). There are many amazing people and support groups to help you through this. You are a beautiful person and don't worry about what others think. You will make it, it's a journey and this is just another tool to get you where you want to go. One step at a time and the little things amount to huge milestones. You can and will do great, have faith in yourself and others that help you.

My surgery date is August 19th at 11:30. I have an excellent surgeon. he has performed 4,000 surgeries and counting. He has achieved many awards for his work and is highly recommended! I have completed the seminar, the paperwork and consent forms, the Breathe test (H pylori test), met with psych, and now waiting for the rest if the itinerary. Only required a 3 day liquid diet before surgery and a 1400 calorie diet the month before. all that is done and being worked on. Cut out red meat, liquid calories, ( drinking Water or crystal light). I think the only steps now is preop clearance, dietitian, and EKG. our insurance required nothing.

the other questions were mainly for after the surgery.

Hi Tina.

I will give you my thoughts. I had surgery on May 28. I was cleared to drive a week later. I too am a picky eater, with a bad gag reflex. I had a 2 week liquid diet preop. I was on pureed foods when I came home 3 days after surgery. Moved to soft foods in about 8 days. My surgeon cleared me for any exercise immediately if my body felt that I could do it. Incisions healed nicely except one. Still working on that but it is not infected, just slow to heal. I will tell you, be prepared to have someone help you with basics, getting in and out of bed, dressing (underwear hardest). You will probably need to have help with basics of wiping yourself, etc.

I started taking Biotin and folic acid pre surgery. This will help with Hair loss. Nutrition said it was helpful. I will tell you it is imperative to get your liquids in after surgery. I just met with my surgeon and nut on Thursday. They said it was ok I couldn't get the Protein in yet, but a must for liquid. Your urine will most likely have a very strong smell, and it will be dark. Keep drinking until it gets light in color.

I sleep on my stomach. I was in the recliner for 9 days. Not fun but so much easier.

Get as much information as you can to calm your nerves. It is so strange to not be hungry anymore and actually not have food as the center of my day. Good luck to you and keep posting your questions!

Are you and your wife still having surgery together on the same day? I don't want to be negative or discouraging but this worries me! I needed so much help from my hubby after surgery.... If he wasn't able to help the. I don't think me or my kids would have been properly taken care of. (Not saying y'all can't do it just worried) plus you can't anticipate if one of you may have a complication. I'm not telling you what to do, I just want to make sure if you still decide to operate the same day you get as much help as possible!! I would not want to have to wait any longer than possible so I understand....good luck!!!

We are still having surgery together. However many couples have had it together through our surgeon and the success rate and progress is amazing! We also have hired a nanny to take care of our daughter and live with us for the first 30 days. (if we don't need her that long than that's fine too). Thank You for the concern, I really appreciate it! :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
