OK, so how happy am I that I'm having regular BMs!?!!

Is this a ridiculous thing to be so overjoyed about?

Hey JeninCO, I thought I was the only one that felt that way. It may be mti for most folks but not us. We see life in a whole new way.

I wonder how many Jennifer's we now have? I'll have to count.

I am still new to this site, I have only posted once, but reading everything has really helped! My surgery was yesterday. Everything went great. While I was out i "dreamt" that they couldnt do it cause my liver was too big. Weird, I know. I was in a pretty good amount of pain when I woke up but after some Lortab and a few shots of Demerol I was much better. Still pretty sore today, but that is to be expected since it hasn't even been 24 hours. I have a little fever, has anyone else had this? I makes me a little worried but I am sure I will be fine. So excited that I finally have this now!!!! How long after surgery does it take for you to be hungry? Not looking forward to that. I hope that I am making sense, I am a little drugged up right now. hehehe. Hope everyone is having a great week! Also, when can I start having Protein Shakes? ???

Morning everyone

I feel so much better this am, actually slept on my side for a while last night. have not taken any kind of pain meds since Wed night other han some gas-x and feel like a new person, not 100% but much better.

On another happy note, I have lost 7lbs since Monday morning prior to surgery and that does not include the fluid/air weight I gained after surgery. I am not going to update my ticker because I am going to go off my weight right before surgery and not that weight if that makes any sense. but I am down a lb from that too!

I don't think I had enough fluids yesterday so i'm going to work hard on that today, but i'm getting sick of chicken broth, Jello and popsicles! I don't want much more than that but getting sick of them. My post op liquid diet says I can add skim milk today, which I don't normally l ike but might get some just for a little variety!

Good luck to everyone today, I was knocked down longer than I expected but it was well worth it!

Pamela -- Sorry, I can't help you girl. I have never had that "problem" in my entire life, much less in the recent past. But I certainly do appreciate your sharing with us!!! Made my morning just thinking about it!

Jenn -- So glad you have turned the corner. You may find that you are feeling great in the morning, but sore in the evenings. So take it easy!! I can't believe you haven't been needing your pain meds...I took them for at least 4 days as I recall...at night mostly. Is your gas getting better too? Did you ever have the dreaded shoulder pain? Crazy how intense that can get!

Sara - Hungover?

Terry

definately tired at night but still no meds. Gas and noises are much better but still there, and YES SHoulder pain YUCK - the gas x seems to take it right away. It is strange, a small pocket but it is very painful.

I am off to the bank today and to get a couple of things done - I'm sure I will be sleeping by noon

Ok.. so here's my problem. I'm sticking to the diet to the letter. I figure I have about 500 calories a day. I know I shouldn't weigh every day, but I do cause it was just falling off right after surgery... BUT I have lost nothing in the last 4 days. It's been 10 days since surgery and I've lost 10#, but that was all in the first 6 days. Anyone else have this problem??? I'm not about to give in to frustration, but it's disheartening knowing you have done your best with eating and it doesn't show up on the scale. I'm not gaining and that's fine, but how the heck COULD I gain on what I'm eating???

I have always heard that once our bodies get used to starvation mode, you quit losing. You probably need to increase your calorie intake. 500 calories a day really isn't enough in my opinion.

I'm still on liquids and that's all the calories I can get out of the stuff I eat!! I've put in a call to the lap band center so hopefully I can get an answer soon.

Judy - You definitely need to be eating more than that. 500 cals a day is not healthy. Didn't your doctor make a calorie recommendation for you? Mine is 1000-1200/day and I've finally hit that the last two days. Are you keeping track of your Protein?

You definitely will hit a little plateau at first...it may even last up to a month or so. This is definitely not unusual. I have had the same experience as you. I gained 2# (to 204) and the scale hasn't budged in 3 days. But I was prepared for that and will just keep on doing what I'm doing...except trying to up my calories a bit more. I'll be glad to get on solid foods to help get my protein up to 80g/day.

EAT!!!

No, no calorie recommendation. Just a list of what I could have. I have 3 yogurts a day for 300 calories and 15 Protein. Then I have Crystal Light, broth and a treat of light juice. That's it. I'm not even sure that adds up to 500 calories by day's end. But that's what's on the list. I asked my nutritionist about the protein and she said that was sufficient for the first month. They've been doing this for awhile so I listen to them.. but it sure is different than other post op diets I've read.

I'm not hungry after I have my liquids.. but sure wish I could lose a little weight again here!

By the way, I was a moderator on a low-carb forum for over a year and counseled lots and lots (and lots!) of people... so I have hundreds of people's experience to compare ours to. So that's where my 'authority' comes from ....for lack of a better word! I'm no authority, for sure, but I've hung out with a bunch o' dieters!! I know Tracy did, too.

Well, she's right about the "sufficient for the first month"... 1 month at this level won't harm you. So all I can say is just be patient and really try not to worry about the scale. Weight loss doesn't happen in a steady line downwards....never....it's 2 steps forward one step back....all the way down that path. The sooner you get used to that idea and get comfortable with it, the less crazy you'll be!!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
