I think an over 60 group would be great. I'm tired of hearing people say to me "Why do this now at your age?" I am a newbie, just completing my requirements. I hope to be done with them at the end of October. Maybe then I'll get a surgery date.

My surgery was June 17 2014 so I am about 4 months into my journey. Down 54 pounds with about 25-30 more pounds to go. I am 60 and retired so I have plenty of time to walk. Enjoying my new life and increased energy.

Hi everyone. We sixties have been a quite lot lately. Just to let you know, it was a good 2014 for me. I had RNY in Aug and I'm now completely off all medications. I hit my first milestone of going under 200 pounds this month and I'm now working to my goal weight. I wish you all a Happy New Year and hope you the best in your WLS goals.

I have to say I never in my wildest dreams thought I would fit into a size 6 Petite pair of jeans, but yup, went shopping and 8's were too big. Amazing though.. My BMI still says I am Obese at 31.5! Makes no sense to me! Who sets these numbers! I have to go from obese to overweight before I am normal range! Really, is normal a size zero for heaven's sake! I am a grandma (age60) wearing size 6. Couldn't be happier and I will just ignore the BMI stats!

Hi All,

I'm 61 and pre-surgery. I've chosen the bypass for now, although I guess that could change as I learn more about each surgery. I have 1 more month of a 6 month doctor supervised diet to go (I've only lost 15 pounds). Tomorrow I have an orientation seminar and in the next week or so, I'll see the Surgeon's Nurse Practitioner; followed by a nutritionist, behavioralist and physical therapist and need an EKG; plus my PCP wants me to have a sleep study done. THEN I finally see the surgeon and set the surgery date. I'm thinking March or April - my PCP thinks sooner?!

I was up for surgery in July 2012 and earlier in 2010, but my insurance changed both times and it wasn't covered. I have my fingers crossed nothing changes this time. Does anyone else have AARP Medicare Complete through United Healthcare? They told me the surgery is covered, but I'm wondering what they'll cover when it comes to the other specialists.

When I was first approved in 2010, I have to admit that looking better in clothes was my main objective. Last year I developed diabetes and high cholesterol, on top of hypertension which I've had since I was 34. My objectives have completely changed! I want to be free of diabetes and high cholesterol. I want a longer life expectancy! Although I fully plan to shop in the junior department after the surgery - lol.

In prior years, I wasn't at all concerned about the surgery itself. I've aged since then and I must say I'm a little concerned about the safety of the surgery and that my weight loss will be slower. Guess I'll find out!

What kind of exercise do you all do and how often? I always fall short on exercise, but I'm going to have to kick it up.

Thanks!

Dena

Best of luck on your decision. I'm 61 too and I had RNY last August. I think age has no difference on how slow our fast you loss. If you stay the course everyone will eventually loose the weight they want. For me it shot off up until two stalls. The biggest one was three weeks long. My body decided when to start loosing again.

My doctor told me there's risk in all surgery. The only difference in this case is that it's elective.

As for exercise I don't go to a gym. I'm retired with a bad back. My only exercise is working in my yard. It's my passion though and many times I end up crawling back into the house because I've over worked my back. It takes a day or two before I can recover enough to start again.

Here I am. I am 66 and getting ready for surgery. I am trying to learn and absorb so much information. It is good to see other people my age on the forum. I too want to feel well enough to keep up with my grandchildren. My surgery is in 3 months and I have done a lot of dr appoibntments and tests so far. I had no idea how involved this whole journey would be and I still have a long ways to go. I have 115 pounds to loose. I hope you continue to do well. It is encouraging. Keep posting. I will be reading.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
