Hi all boomers. I am 61 and am soooooo happy to see others my age on here. I started at 244 and lost 34 lbs so far. RNY was on 1/28/13. I'm slowly learning my new pouch and on soft foods now. I'm from West Chester, Ohio (north of Cincinnati)

Hi West Chester, I live north of you...Franklin Twp, just off of 122. I have waited a year thanks to my insurance denial twice but I fought them and WON!!!! I just found out this week. I had everything done but labs and cardio, the cardio is next week, then not sure what follows....I have already seen the diet, Physc., fitness appt. just ready and waiting for the go word....

I think there are a number of folks on the forum (myself included) who would very much appreciate hearing your story about winning the battle with your insurance company after two denials. Please share the reasons for the initial denials and what changed that ultimately led to your success. And by the way - congratulations! You're gonna love the new you!!

Hi folks... I'm 65 and just now jumping through my pre-op hoops. As far as I can tell, I've got the prerequisites done and am waiting for insurance approval. The earliest I can get scheduled for my surgery is mid-late August and it can't come soon enough!

I'm glad to find this wise and mature 60's group!

I am 69 and became a great grandma a year ago on the 16th of October. My surgery is scheduled for Nov 19th. They are sure thorough on pre op testing. I still have to see a cardiologist and kidney specialist. Had upper GI and chest X-ray yesterday. Blood work still to come.

May I join the group? I was 68 when I had the lap band, 70 when it was removed, now 71 and had RNY on 9/11/13. There aren't too many 70 people on here, even though there are many that have had this surgery. I want to live to be 100 and maybe see some great grandchildren grow. But right now my only granddaughter is more involved in working and going to college. So time will tell. My surgery went well, did great, still doing great, in stall mode right now, but had been losing a pound a day at the beginning.

Welcome Birthsjourney. Glad to hear you are doing good. And the insulin is totally great. I've dropped from approximately 100-150 units daily, now to less than 100 units in three days. Think for me, I'll always be a diabetic as have been one for 20 years. Or the only way I may get out of it is no carbs which includes veggies and fruit and only get Protein. This is my second WLS as had the band in 2010 but it slipped. Have about 40 lbs to lose (that is my goal, not my doctors they want less to keep a little fat on the old bones). I just recently celebrated my 32nd anniversary of my 39th birthday, as that is about how young I feel. I'm fully retired but still work as don't know what else to do with my life as that is what I have done all my life. My name is Chari and I live in Kansas City. Think you'll like this site and if you have any concerns, questions, stories please ask or share. Someone will always respond.

hi Kathy,

going to post here as no one in the age 70+ blog. I need a pal in this journey. I am 72...doing gastric bypass hopefully soon after new years. my dr. injured his arm so his patients are backed up. I am enthused about this surgery...hoping to be diabetes and hypertension free plus lose 100-120 pounds.

I live in the woods outside Fairbanks, Alaska. we are expecting -40F tonight. I am almost totally bedbound. a trip to town is a major adventure. especially exhausting are trips to my dr. he is almost 900 miles round trip away from me...I have had to make two trips by car to his office already and will have to make one, possibly two more trips before the actual surgery date. my husband who is a little more than 10 yrs younger than me, does all our driving right now. he is totally supportive of my decision to go this route.

would love to hear about your experiences.

blessings from,

Karen in the snowy woods of Alaska

Hi Karen, I'm not Kathy but want to welcome you to the group. I turned 71 in August and had RnY 9/11/13. I am a diabetic and have actually gone off Metformin and my insulin has gone from 125-150 units per day to less than 100 units every three days. I have dropped from 6 blood pressure meds down to three and some of those the strength has gone down. Cholesterol meds are no more. I'm still in the stage of seeing what I can eat and what I can't eat and I will say my pouch will tell me rather fast what it doesn't like. I'm still very active and work 30 hours a week. I have noticed though as the weight has come off my arthritis has flared up some, but it also could be various other things. I have a hard bed and don't have the cushion like I use to ;) and that might be the cause. I was banded in 2010 and lost 40 lbs. It slipped so it came out in May, 2013. Lost 8 while waiting on the RnY, time of surgery weighed 211 and now down to 182. Doctors will be happy with another 22 lbs and no more than 32 lbs. Me I want 42 lbs. but sizes have changed from when we were younger, so will take it a day at a time.

So sorry that you have to travel so far to see a doctor but understand because of you location. Don't think I could handle the cold weather in Alaska, it is bad enough here in Missouri when it gets into the single digits, for me. Also have noticed my body thermostat changed with this surgery. I am colder and crave salt (never been much, if at all, a salt eater).

Keep posting and lets us know how you are doing. Also if you have questions there is always someone here to help you including myself. Wishing you well in your journey to a new you and better health.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
