Do doctors ever prescribe vitamins? I was hoping maybe there was some way to use flex spending on them.

The only thing I have a script for is my B12 shot that I give myself once a month.

Doctors sometimes write Rx for vitamins but I believe they are usually for exceptionally high doses such as the B-12 that mami mentioned or high doses of vitamin D. But as with any Rx, they need a medical justification for writing the Rx. I've never heard of a doctor writing a Rx for "normal" doses of vitamins. Interesting question if flex spending would cover the cost if your doctor did write a Rx for every day doses of vitamins. Please let us know what you find out!

I would think that Gastric Bypass certainly would be medical justification for Vitamin prescriptions! As in, they are completely necessary!

Definitely something I'm interested in finding out as well, before it comes time to decide amounts for next year's flex spending!

I have flex spending as well and my requirement is to have a prescription from your doctor in order for you to be able to use flex spending money. It doesn't hurt for them to write it out and for you not to use it.

I have flex spending as well and would love to be able to use it for vitamins. That said, I don't know exactly how their computer system works but wouldn't it likely deny a charge for "vitamins" on your flex spending card? Even if your doctor wrote the script, I'm dubious that the charge would go through. Would definitely love to hear someone tell me that it works!!

You pay for the Vitamins out of your pocket. Then you will have to fill out a paper claim and mail it in with your receipt and prescription. Then you will receive a reimbursement via mail. That's how my plan works. You might want to call your flex spending people.

Under my Indian Treaty Status in Canada I have my doctor prescribe me all vitamins and my health care under the treaty covers the vitamins.
