Monterrey Mexico-Dr. Rumbaut

Recommended Posts

I am new to the forums. This is one of the only ones I have found for people who went abroad for RNY. I had surgery on April 19, 2012 and will be 4 months post op in a few days. I have lost 76 pounds and feel really good about that, but still have along way to go. The dis-advantage to going abroad is the follow-ups. I am in contact with my Dr and Nut thru emails and such , but it still isnt the same a going to their office for a real follow up. That is were my GP has been a saint and doing follow ups and the blood work....ect. Would luv to talk with others who went abroad for RNY.

I didnt go to Mexico, but went to Detroit, about 1400 mi away because they had a better facility for my combination of problems. I too am almost 4 months out, had surgery on April 26. Had a few stricture problems which made the distance present challenges.

I understand. I had a bleed and went back in for emergency surgery. I had to stay in the hospital in Mexico for 6 days instead of the planned 2. I was blessed my son was with me, but the rest of my family was back here in the states. The follow ups are impossible in person and emails just aren't the same. How are you doing now with the stricture issue? And how have you progressed with your life change and weight loss?

Hi... I am planning on going to Mexico for a revision from Lap Band to RNY. It has been a struggle to choose a surgeon and calm the fears of going out of the country for such a complex surgery. I talked with Dr. Rumbaut and really felt comfortable and at ease with him but unfortunately I have not been able to find many that have had revision surgery with him. I also would be very comfortable with Dr. Acevez but both of them charge quite a bit more than I can afford. Right now I am closest to deciding on Dr. Alejandro Lopez in Puerto Vallarta. I sent off for my passport today and am hoping for surgery the first week in March. There is a lot more info on surgeries in Mexico on OH... but this forum is smaller and much easier to navigate so I hope to find others here that are in the same boat. I am also familiar with the forum as I was a LAPBAND talker for some time before I realized that my Banding was a failure for me. Anyhoo... hope all is well for you now that your leak is fixed!

There was a girl named Eva Chavez on the November 2012 boards who had a terrible surgery go wrong in Mexico.

Here was her first post post op:

My surgery went very bad I am typing this from the ICU of an American hospital in San Diego. I am not well enough to type the whole story but my mother had to call the American Consulate to get me out. He refused me pain meds telling me I was complaining over nothing and he screwed up during the surgery and caused internally bleeding which he had to completely cut me open for. My stitches are oozing tons of blood and I am waiting on an OR and surgeon to take me back into surgery. BEWARE of Dr Quinones in Tijuana Mexico

As a nurse... I know things can go wrong with surgery done anywhere... even here in the good ole USA. I think the most important thing a person can do when considering surgery is to research their surgeon... I only wish there were more people on this forum that have experiences with the most well known of the bariatric surgeons in Mexico. I feel really comfortable with using Dr. Acevez but not as happy about where he is located and his costs. Dr. Lopez seems to have a good following as well and love that he is in Puerto Vallarta and his costs are less. Overall... I'd like to have a safe surgery in a beautiful place if I am going to put myself in debt to hopefully win my lifelong fight with obesity. I don't want to come home in a box but that's where I'm headed if I don't find a way to get healthy!

Hi there... I am having surgery with Dr. Aceves, I live in Mexicali which is where he works, so I am glad we have such a wonderful surgeon in town. Before making a decision I read all I could and he is by far one of the best surgeons worldwide. Good luck in your decision making. Hope all goes well wherever you have your surgery done. Take care!

Please. if you are considering going abroad for your sugery, do your homework and research the doctors, but PLEASE be VERY careful if you plan to go to Tijuana Mexico, during my research for mexico a lady had just died in Tijuana and there have been many bad reports about doctors in that location.

There was a recent desth where a well known surgeon put off addressing a leak beside he was supposedly leaving for a vacation with his family. The leak was not dealt with and the lady went septic.

I've heard/read many horror stories with US doctors as well. We cannot generalize and say stay away from Mexicali though, I had my surgery in Mexicali, with Dr. Aceves and I have had ZERO complications, him and his team are the best.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
