Recommended Posts

Can someone just write me and tell me this surgery went all right for them. I'm getting crazy thinking that something will happen like the band will be attached to my organs and I will have to stay in the hospital for over a week. Please tell me that will not happen. I have had this Band since 2007 so It has been with me a long time. As this get's closer I get nuts. Than I have the Holidays to contend with , and not gaining weight. My Sleeve will not be done untill JAN..2014 HELP!!!! JewelJ

Jewel,

I had my Band removed in March and even with loads of scar tissue they took it out. The procedure was a little longer but that was it....went home the next day and I am being sleeved tomorrow.

OMG! tHANKS for writing...Kyrasma.. why did you have to wait so long for the doctor to do the sleeve? I was told about the scar tissue... That is why it is better to wait to do the sleeve.. He wants to work with good tissue to staple the sleeve. Wanting no problems.... Please tell me why you had to wait so long. My Doc wrote a letter to the Ins Co. for Both Surgeries.. wanted both approved before he took the band out... What happened with you? I will be thinking of you tomorrow.. Please keep me posted on how it went... I will friend you...so we can keep in touch....Be well my Friend...

My band was taken out in December. I had it 6 years. I had no complications what so ever! I know there was some scar tissue, but I actually went home that day. I was sleeved 9/12 and so far it seems like the sleeve is as great as the band was supposed to be, but wasn't! Best of luck to you!

Dear Jessicaanders Can you tell me ? How are the rules different. I know about the no drinking with meals.. How long after you were sleeved did you remain on liquids? How did you do not gaining weight when the band was out.. and waiting to be sleeved? So is it the same...Just watching the Protein? JewelJ

Jewel,

I was not sure I was going to do the sleeve that is part of my long wait. My dr. had said to wait 3 months for healing, since I had so much scar tissue and then once I decided the Insurance said I had to do 60 days of supervised diet, plus PCP letter, another psych eval and of course pre-op stuff.

I did lose all that weight with my band I was so happy with my results and was maintaining a healthy weight and then the nightmare began. Very long story short... I believe that after being on antibiotic for 6 months due to a bad filling from ASPEN damn dental my body rejected the band. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital while my surgeon and every other specialist tried to find something wrong with me. My surgeon insisted it was not my band but I couldn't keep anything down, not even liquid. The other doctors could not find anything wrong with me either so finally they said the band must go. I begged my Dr to just look don't take it! He wouldn't he said I am going in and it is coming out. I cried until they put me out and woke up crying. I went into a depression couldn't even talk about my band without crying. Seems kind of crazy now... but I had a feeling of a terrible loss.

After talking to my Dr. he insisted that he would never band me again and that he did not recommend it and if that was my choice he would not even help me find a Dr. to do it. He felt that since I did so well and my compliance was so great that I will be successful with a sleeve. It took me time to stop being mad at him for taking my band but I know I couldn't live that way and I was not thinking clearly. I was truly sick and didn't want to face it. After that I started researching the sleeve and found this site. Then decided with the weight I was already gaining I have to do it.

I did gain over 60 pounds since March but I really just always felt hungry. I felt all my control was taken with my band. I am so ready for tomorrow. Do you ever use the chat room on here. It is such a great way to start meeting others.

Thanks for thinking of me tomorrow and the gals in chat will be giving updates I am sure before I feel up to chatting.

Of course we have to chew chew chew, and instead of 3 meals (what I was recommended with the band) the sleeve is 5-6. Protein first, veggies second. I was on liquids one week before surgery and 2 weeks after, then progressed to puréed food for a few days and now I'm on soft foods. No vomiting or things feeling stuck and I have tolerated all foods thus far. :)

I did gain about 18lbs between dec-sept. It could've been so much worse, but I had already gained a lot back with the band so I was starting out heavier anyway. So far I've lost 28lbs in 28 days (I weigh in on thurs). Try to stay busy!! Talk to a girlfriend, take a walk, making small substitutions make a difference!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
