When is a goal too excessive?

Okay I am talking about looking at the "BMI" height and weight ratios. I know this is all about being healthy but with my height I could be as little as 131 pounds and as much as 167. Call me crazy but weight less than my 6 foot tall son seems awkward. If you followed that format, do you think you would be healthy looking at the lowest end of the scale?

I was looking at that too, for my height 5'7" I could weigh 119- 159 literally the ends of both extremes... Realistically tho I can't picture 119 as a healthy weight for me without looking sick...I'm sticking to my goal of 137. why did I pick that #? It's the middle of the normal bmi chart

When I chose my "magic number" goal weight I picked 140lbs. On the BMI chart that is the highest weight in the "average" range for my height. 141lbs would be overweight. So that is my target. My surgeon and NUT and everyone that has asked agreed it is a good number. After years of 200, 250, 300+ I am quite sure 140lbs will be more than "skinny" for me. LOL

I think everyone is different. You also have to consider your bone structure.

People with a larger bone structure would probably look better at the higher end of the "goal" weight whereas someone with a small frame would look better at the lower end. KWIM?

I chose 160 because it is one lb less than my husband. That's my goal, to weigh less than him just once .

I recall being in college and happy about weighing 145lbs. Had nice curves, but was not fat.

My surgeon's office set my goal weight at 155 and said I could go lower if I chose to. The way I figure, when I get to 145, if I seem sick looking I could gain a few pounds. Heck, I am a weight GAINING expert! Putting on a few pounds shouldn't be a big deal!!! Just want to be at a stable weight.

My BMI is 22.6 - that is at 5'7" and 144, I do go up and down a pound a pound or two, but 144 - 144.5 is about normal for me. I've been 11 pounds lighter and it was waaaay too low, although I didn't see it at the time. Everybody else around me was freaking out. I look at pictures now and know why, I looked gaunt. If you go strictly by the 'healthy BMI' range, I could have gone done to 118 pounds, but I'd have been a walking stick. I'd have looked like a cancer victim. I purposely gained back up to 145 and I stay within 143 - 146.5, it is an easy range to maintain for me and I look and feel healthy!!! I think we use the chart and then use common sense!!

My goal weight is actually 14 lbs higher than my "normal" BMI. Both my surgeon and PCP have agreed that this is fine. It is actually my "intial" goal- after I reach it I would like to focus on reducing body fat & increasing muscle as well as increasing calories by a little. My weight will either continue down or stabilize. After being 140 + lbs overweight, I will be perfectly happy only 14 lbs over. Also, I think it might be easier to maintain....

low end of the totum pole for your weight goal????

131-167??

quite a range!!!!

if that lower #is the lowest of your range, shouldn't be a prob to be there

but - your body should/will tell you when you shouldn't lose any more weight :mellow:

you don't want your new and improved face/body to be toooo skinny and straggly ;)

get a goal # if you like

I will tell you definitely/probably/possibly :blink: :lol:

your weight goal # might change over time

I do have questions about the goal weight too. I randomly picked something. But the BMI range for me is 115-165, since I'm 5'6.

I've been 115--but I was 20 years old then! I didn't look too skinny, I looked just fine. I just can't imagine me, at 47, being able to get back to what I weighed before kids and just general living, to my weight when I was 20! Is that even reasonable or achievable?

Do people achieve that?

I agree. However, I think a lot of heavier people think they are big boned when they aren't. For my $0.02 I suggest you pick a number in the middle and see how you like it once you get there.

Personally, I have hit a thin weight a number of times in the past (I'm a yo-yo). I found that I look OK at 140, even better at 135, and terrific at 125-130. That's when I discovered that I'm not big boned :lol:

Fat or not I am big boned. Lol I've always had them even as a kid not fat I had no stomach and at 13 I wore a size 10 in women's pants because of the width of my hips... So I'm assuming that will be the smallest size I'll ever be.... Lol I of course don't know for sure... But it's a good hypotheses

There is a method of determine whether you are big boned. Most drs measure using your fingers around your wrist. Here is a website that actually gives you the inches http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/imagepages/17182.htm

Personally, I'm actually am big boned, its not just a fat excuse. When I was skinny, at 5'8.5, I was at the top of my healthy weight range (165-170), wearing a size 6/8, and looking very healthy. Because of my hips/bone structure, I don't think it would be healthy for me to be much less then that. Everyone is different!!

That's exactly my thinking. I remember being like 135 in high school and yes I looked great but I'm a mom of 4. Not sure that would really be healthy.

Lol my husband quit smoking and has gained some weight. He has no clue what I weigh now, so when I am less than him I will shout it from the rooftop!!

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

        I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.
