Grocery shopping is no fun anymore!

I'm 3 weeks post op and went grocery shopping for the first time today. I'm still on full liquids (4 wks) and my husband is a low carber. It was NO FUN! All we got was meat, veggies, and pea Soup.

Grocery shopping used to be fun...when I loved to eat.

I am the opposite I love to grocery shop! Its fun to find new and different things to eat. Last week I went just to shop for me , its not easy but I thinks its fun to try new things. Maybe it will be better for you when your a little further out. Good luck :)

dma2013,

I'm still in the deciding on surgeon & preparing for before & after. Can you please provide your list of groceries you buy now. It would probably help a lot of us out who are PreOp who struggle in knowing what will we will buy once we do our surgery and help those who already PostOp.

I actually love grocery shopping still. The only thing that has changed is that our grocery bill is cut in half. We dont keep junk in the house anymore. Even though my hubby didnt have surgery, he eats healthier now and is way more active. So the money we save on sugar, junk and pop we save for vacations and new clothes for me lol.

Right now I'm on full liquids. The only things I can eat are:

Cream Soups (on a split pea kick now) and broth

SF Pudding/Jello/Popsicles

Yogurt

Next week I start soft foods (adding egg salad, tuna salad, mashed potatoes, refried Beans and cheese, creamy Peanut Butter, etc)

All hubby eats is literally meat and low carbs veggies (green beans, broccoli, salad stuff) and occasional cheese. I've never, in the 2 1/2 yrs I've known him, ever seen him eat a piece of fruit. he can't get it thru his thick skull that some carbs are healthy. ALL carbs to him are evil.

Whatever works for you. As I stated above, grocery shopping sucked today!

Not too much help with your questions, but it's honestly all I bought today!

The surgical office I am going through provided me with a shopping list for all the stages of pre and post op diet.

Marfar7, of course I love all these you listed... Cream soups, broth, SF Pudding, Jello/Popsicles &

Yogurt. Do I get sugar free or just regular?

Brighteyes,

Thats awesome that they do that for their patients. Makes it so much easier. Can you by any chance please scan and post that list on here by any chance. It could help a lot of us who won't get something like that.

It's just temporary. Give it some time. I'm four and a half months out and I LOVE to grocery shop.. EVEN MORE THAN BEFORE.. Now I can buy the expensive items that I NEVER could afford before. I bought four ounces of 10 year aged extra sharp cheddar last week at $21.00 a pound. It was DELICIOUS! I also buy seafood and expensive cuts of meat, and AWESOME looking produce. I'm not just looking for things that will fill up my enormously large stomach anymore so I can focus on QUALITY rather than QUANTITY.

I was just thinking about this today. With eating less I am almost certain I can purchase better quality food. Thanks for sharing. It's something to certainly look forward to. Hope to be able to do more organic foods than just dairy like I do now.

I will but I will caution against using it unless your doctor has recommended the same diet. I have noticed that people have different nutritional plans and I don't want to mess them up with their doctors orders.

Perhaps you could write down a list of your groceries so we know what your buying now?

Oh and can you give us a menu of your weekly meals so we can get an idea of what your doing?

It would be helpful..

Wife and I both had WLS. In both the grocery purchase department and restaurant department life has taken a definite upturn. We can buy better groceries and much less of them. In the restaurant we can split almost anything and even have some for take home.

We do not at all feel deprived.

Equipped with a freezer, a microwave, proper storage bags and tupperware we are the masters of eating well on the cheap.

That's fun for us. :D

Okay, I found my list, plus I added my pantry supplies. Remember this is my NOW grocery list. I have NOT had my surgery yet... Lol! Bless you! I just came back and saw this!

Boy you are thorough!

Ok everything frozen get rid of! :P

Ditto with the Snacks....

Oh and the noodles Soups (except fat free cream of Soup for the beginning)

Dressings? gone make them from Greek yogurt.

Or buy bolt house farms Greek yogurt dressing.

Condiments? Nope except mayo (olive oil mayo is best)

Crisco/ lard? Never again!

No juices pop or coolaid / (sf Water drops are good)

Breads/rice nope...

And there you have it a sleevers diet!

(I'll let you slide on the hot dogs :P)

The drinks with sugar in them have to go. This made the biggest difference for me pre-surgery. I loved kool-aid and soda. I just went cold turkey. Crystal Light helped a lot, but there are many kinds of sugar-free drinks. It also helps one get used to just drinking more Water. Diet soda is iffy especially since carbonation is a no-no after surgery so no point getting used to it. Seriously, the drinks with sugar have absolutely no nutritional value and increase calorie count tremendously. I didn't think I could drop them but I don't miss them at all.

Edit: Oh, and on the main topic, I know how you feel! Grocery shopping is the only shopping I ever liked to do and shopping for liquids was no.fun.at.all (especially since I was still in a lot of pain). It was so pointless and there was no joy in it and no meals to look forward to. But when I got to mushy foods and soft foods it got a little better. And now, 3 months out, I LOVE IT more than I ever did before. You should see how giddy I get over the new ingredients I can try and finding them in my local stores.

Also, I am a low carber but there's more to it than meat and cheese. But I also like to cook and love finding new recipes and have spent hours finding and even creating my own low carb recipes so that does help.
