Protein bars- helpful or harmful?

That is how the Atkins diet calculates them.

Net carbs should be trade marked by Atkins. It is a fallacy. A carbohydrate is not invalidated by Fiber as most fiber is Water soluble and is not absorbed like a carb is.

Cinnamon Roll - 24g (17g fiber)

Apple Pie - 24g (18g fiber)

strawberry Cheesecake - 25g (17g fiber)

(There are several other flavors, these are the ones I bought today)

As I understand it, if you subtract the fiber from the carbs you end up with net carbs which in each of these cases is pretty acceptable.

If the concept of net carbs is hooey, then yeah the carbs are ridiculous!

Thank you. I do think that when you subtract the fiber you get a better, more accurate carb count. I will definately try these. Cinnamon roll--mmmm- making my mouth water! LOL

If I'm having a hard time with the shakes should I try the bars?

I have a Protein bar for Breakfast several times a week. I haven't noticed that they've slowed my weight loss at all. My doctor never recommended for me to count carbs, so I don't. In the future, if my weight loss slows or stalls, I may re-think this approach :)

My nut is ok with them as long as they meet the following criteria:

Less than 15gms of carbs

Less than 200 calories

At least 15gms of Protein.

Zone bars and the other candy bar type Protein Bars don't meet her standards.

Btw- I only eat them when I am traveling and can't get to other food.

Protein bars are definitely my foe. I can't stop eating them if they are in the house, and nutritionally I don't think they are great.

I adore Quest bars but have to keep them out of the house for the reasons above. Also, I know some people are suspicious about the nutrition "facts" for Quest being entirely accurate. People who are diabetic/insulin resistant have reported crazy blood sugar elevation after eating them, which should not happen if the label is accurate (Google "Quest bars blood sugar" or similar to see what I mean).

I think it all depends one which Protein bars you are eating. As others have mentioned, the Quest bars are pretty dang awesome. They aren't full of crap fillers and you get a lot of Protein for the calories. I still have a shake for breakfast every morning (around 40 grams of protein) and may have a snack at some point during that day that involves a Quest protein bar (20 grams of protein). The cookie dough or brownie flavors are amazing when microwaved for about 12 seconds. I'd much rather have one of these than, say, a Dairy Queen ice cream cone or some other higher calorie treat. Just KNOWING that I'm getting all that protein goodness in a tasty treat..... yum!

But there are other protein bars out there that have almost as much calories and half the protein (Luna protein bars). They don't necessarily taste like candy bars, but since the protein isn't as good, I no longer get these unless I REALLY need a snack and that is the only thing available.

I also like the Pure Protein bars (some, anyhow, like the S'mores flavor). Higher in protein than the Luna and the calories aren't bad.

Detour protein bars taste more like a candy bar. They are okay in a pinch, but they have sort of a nasty "inhale" taste. You know, like when you breathe in through your mouth while eating one of these. (I think the Pure protein bars have this too.)

To be honest, I don't track sugar, carbs, or fat. Total daily calories and protein are what I care about. (I have never had diabetes.) I'm into the "keep it simple sweetie" mode of tracking. I do use My Fitness Pal and it DOES track those other things, but I don't consciously say "Whoa, nope, not going to eat that because it has xx carbs. I might say "Whoa, no protein and 200 calories? No... I don't think so."

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
