Just wondering why people talk abt Hair loss around 3 rd month

Is this bx you lose a lot of weight quickly that the hair loss happens?

Or is it bc people not getting in enough Protein?

Has anyone had an experience where they didn't have hair loss at all?

I'm only 2 months post op, so I haven't experienced this yet. I already have pretty thin/fine hair, so I'm REALLY hoping this doesn't happen to me.

I think it's a combination of not enough Protein and the shock to your body after surgery. And if you are one of those people who can't tolerate food and doesn't get back to eating "normal" foods right away, I think your body will miss out on some nutrients needed to keep your body healthy. Since your hair isn't necessary to life, I think that's the first thing your body says, "Ok, let's forget about healthy hair and focus on a healthy liver" or something like that.

I'm not a doctor, obviously... so who knows why we lose the hair. Not everyone has this problem tho... and it does come back! :)

Doc advised me that the lack of Protein during extreme weight loss can cause Hair loss for some folks.

That is what I've heard as well..lack of Protein.

I haven't joined the official "Sleevers club" yet (5 more NUT to go), however I'm reading a ton on this site to become more informed. This is an AWESOME site with an overwhelming amount of support!! Love all you guys & gals!

Good morning.. I think this is mainly from the "shock to your body". My doctor warned me it would happen. I always met and usually exceeded my Protein requirements. Did everything precautionary that I had read about including Biotin supplements and shampoos etc. Yet between 5-9 months, I lost so much hair. It would come out in goobs while in the shower and my brush was always full too. I would pass my fingers through my conditioned hair and at times circles of 50 plus hairs would come out. I was worried I'd be bald. I too have very fine hair but lots of it. Well, kiddo.. At 18 months out it is growing back, but unfortunately for me, I have about 3 inches of new growth all over my head. The new hair is like a SHEEP!! This hair is like some people get after chemo treatments. I can NOT control it all. My bangs look like corkscrews. I straighten it and 10 minutes later.. OUCH! I hate this new curly crap, but it beats baldness. I live in Maine and we've had a terribly humid, rainy spring and early summer. I am hoping if this humidity ever goes away, I can again get control. The part I hate most is the top layer which is wavy, almost straight, sticks out when those corkscrews spring that hair up, I look stupid. I have cut my hair to shoulder length and layered it some, but not ready for a short haircut, especially an afro yet, this hair is better than bald. When I wear my hair up, all the little corkscrews find their way to to the surface making for one fuzzy looking mop head. LOL The best of luck to you. I hope you are one of the lucky ones who never loses their hair.

The medical term for this is Telogen Effluvium. I'm not sure if it is avoidable or not. I'm 10 weeks out and haven't experienced this yet. I've come to terms that it most likely will happen. I just bought the Organix Shampoo with Biotin and collagen. It won't stop the Hair loss, but it is supposed to make hair look fuller and thicker. I always get in all my Protein so I'm curious to see if I can avoid hair loss.

Happy1957 - I have a friend who had bypass surgery, many years ago now, but when her hair grew back, it was very curly as well. She would go for keratin treatments and get it straightened.

For everyone - I was reading the paper this morning and came across an add entitled "Worried About Hair loss? " It talks about this product, HairSil Accelerator. Says regular use may help fight hair loss and promote growth. It's available at Walgreens, Shaw's supermarket, Ralph's, Walmart, Meijers, Wise, Rite Aid, Jewel Osco, Kroger and Fred Meyer.

I'm only 4 weeks out as of this coming Monday, but I think I might get it and see if at the very least I can help minimize the inevitable!

I didn't lose any hair. I have no idea if this helped...but I used Keranique products for my hair (I ordered from HSN). I also eat a lot of Protein Bars (mainly Atkins). I have never been good about taking my Vitamins and only get them in a few times a week, but all of my blood work has been normal, so I attribute that to the Atkins bars. I usually have one for Breakfast and have one before bed. Good luck!

My hair is coming out like crazy and some days I cry because I feel like everyone can tell. Then I look in the mirror and Celebrate my 51 pound loss and think that it is a small price to pay for a whole new me.

Don't worry .. it will get better. I thought I too was going bald, but it stops and begins to grow, but it may not be the same texture.. :-)

I am 6 months out and my hair has been falling out for 2 months now. I wish it would stop soon! I have done everything right, it just happens to most of us. I will be so happy when it starts growing back in I don't care if its straight or curly as long as it comes back.

"Loseitsoon"..I assume your name was just weight you wanted to lose? I too did everything "Right" , to a fault. It still happened, yes hair is better no matter the color or form. At 56 it's retraining me to deal with this new hair. Keep smiling and remember it's only temporary. :-)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
