As of tomorrow ill be 3 weeks post op, my dietician has stated most things I eat should be sugar free, but she didnt say for how long? Now I have lost 50lbs before my surgery and never was on a sugar free diet so when my mother asked how long my sugar free diet should last, she gave a rather general statement of 'as long as you want to keep weight off' well I know from my experience I don't need to stay sugar free to be able to keep doing well.

So basically I'm wanting to know if medically is there a reason for sugar free and for how long? Also am I never allowed to use straws again? Or is that also a temporary thing?

I'm still hoping I don't regret doing this to myself since I was doing so well on my own pre- op but I'm determined I will see this as a positive thing for myself even though its so hard to get used to it all.

One of the reasons I can think of for going sugar free is that we are suppose to get our nutrition from our food (as opposed to Vitamins and supplements).

To get in the required Protein and stay within the recommended daily caloric intake, will naturally force us to choose foods that don't have much processed sugars in them.

Most any foods with sugar or high fructose corn Syrup are going to quickly push us over our recommended daily calories/usually have low amounts of protein/and be low in nutrition.

And on top of that, sugar can be a trigger food - causing hunger to increase/spike insulin levels/and leave you feeling lethargic when insulin levels crash.

I know that when I eat starches that I get hungrier the more I eat - until I'm busting full. Then a few hours later, my insulin levels come crashing down and I get hungry again.

I agree with what joatsaint said. I am 10 months post-op & I use a straw for my Protein Shakes as they come in a little carton & I can't drink out of the stupid little hole, lol. It doesn't seem to bother me any.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
