Why did the Marriott hotel charge my debit card?

I know they use your card to put a hold in case something happens to the room but they supposedly took it off when I checked out. Now on my bank statement they have a charge of 78.05 on there. Wtf!!! How do I get my money back? I didn't purchase anything while staying there.

My guess its just a pre auth. All hotels, car rental etc do it.

Usually takes 24 to 72 hours to get it off.

Contact your bank that issued the card. They can advise you if its an actual charge or pre-authorization.

Im betting on the pre auth

I have a charge of $117.00 that has been pending since I left on June 13th! I guess I am doing to have to call my credit card company and take care of this. :(

Are you guys saying that, this fee isn't included in the overall price. Would the coordinators take care of this? Why would anybody have to even give their credit card information?

One of the coordinators did send me an email before I left saying that it's the hotel policy to put down a credit card because the rooms are non smoking and they want to make sure you don't smoke in the rooms or damage the room in anyway. They said it was just a temporary hold though. I sure hope it is but I thought the amount was 100.00. I don't know what the 78.05 is for, but it does say pre auth on it.

The only thing I ate was the broth. I did order water with it because I didn't realize at the time that they had water in there already. I only drank two bottles of water though and left the third one there. You get two free bottles of water per day.

They authorized 1000 pesos (around $78.00) when I checked in before surgery and again when I checked in after surgery, but both authorizations have fallen off.

How long did it take for it to come off? I do remember it saying 1,000.

yes it's included.. As for WHY anybody would have to give their credit card information.. it's pretty standard to do that even when the actual room charge is already covered. The booking angency covers the room fee... but because YOU are actually staying in the room, you have to give your credit card as security to cover charges if there is theft/damage to the room. Also, for everyone who is stating that they were charged, have you called the Marriott about it and asked?

The plot thickens.

If your bottled water came from room service ... you WILL get charged for the water.

If your two bottles per day were dropped off by housekeeping... it is No charge.

If you consume your two bottles in the resteraunt... there is a charge.

the letter states: 2 bottles of water in your room per nite

Hope that helps clear up a bit of the mystery.

Ive been at the Marriot other times. I know of this policy personally.

I don't know exactly — 10 days or so. I think it just depends on the bank or credit card company. It was just like a hotel authorization in the States. Don't worry about it. I'm sure it will come off soon.

Water was dropped off by housekeeping. I called my bank today and said they cannot do anything until the Marriott drops it off on their end. I tried to call the Marriott and my phone will not allow me to make international calls. I don't know what else to do.

Great... so we know there will be no charge for the water!

And your bank / credit card company is correct in stating that the Marriott needs to drop the charge.

Hate to say it but its a waiting game I guess.

Can you email them?

And your cc company should be able to verify it is a charge or a hold. Being a vender at one time of my life I use to put holds on customers cards all the time.

If its a charge... then you need to take action

Good Luck

I tried to call the Marriott today from my home phone and couldn't call either! I don't have International calls blocked either.

I ended up calling a local Marriott and she told me to call 1-800-MARRIOTT and I asked for Customer Care. They told me that they have 30 days to reverse the charge and it depends on my bank, basically how fast they process. I wasn't happy with this answer so I said can you tell me for sure the Marriott in Tijuana has released the charge. He couldn't so he took down all the information and forwarded it to their.....ooh I can't remember what he called their department......something like their business office. I gave him my email, cell and home phone numbers and someone from the Marriott in Tijuana should contact me.

OK just checked my email and Jorge Monroy (jmonroy@grupodiestra.com) who is the Front Office Manager just emailed me and said there is no hold pending on my Mastercard. They immediately released the hold but I need to check with my bank.....release holds between 3 and 30 days depending on the bank. blah blah blah. This was a Citibank Mastercard!
