Trouble shaking the "diet" mentality?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm about 5 weeks post-op and I've been surprised at the number of times I've caught myself thinking like a person on a diet and then needing to remind myself, "oh yeah, this isn't temporary, this is forever"....any time in the past when I've embarked on a lifestyle change, however well-intentioned and permanent-minded I was at the get-go, it always ended.

It isn't so much a deprivation mindset, because I really haven't had cravings for my past indulgences (yet) but more the repeated surprise at my forever-diminished capacity.

I totally get what you are saying. The thing though to keep in mind, is that the further out you go, the easier it will be to slip back into those habits. The sleeve can be easily defeated, and a significant change in lifestyle is the only real way that we will be successful. That's tough, but this is a great time, during your honeymoon phase to get out of those bad habits and relearn how to eat for fuel and not recreation. It sounds like you've experienced that in the past, and I would urge you really concentrate on not only eating smaller portions, but eating a balanced diet. All the sleeve does is limit capacity, and as you go on, that capacity is going to get bigger. What the sleeve won't do is make good choices for you. That's where the hard part comes in. Good luck, it sounds like you are on your way.

Thanks, Johnlatte, you are right. Fortunately, I feel like I was as mentally prepared for this as possible and had started seeing a therapist a while back to unravel and shake loose some things I knew we're standing in my way. Now I am much more "present" in my choices and why I am making them...much easier the other way, but ultimately led to much more pain

I think you are going to be just fine. Hang in there. :)

I completely understand. It take serious time and effort to do this right, not to mention behavioral change (probably the hardest thing ever) and I'm on week 7 and kind of exhausted :) I am not giving up though, but just wanted you to know I feel your pain!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
