My doc does it on an 'as needed' basis with his VSG patients, but does routinely remove them on his DS patients. He left mine in place as he could not feel any stones in there, or see any other signs of distress. I never had any problem with it thru the weight loss period or in the subsequent year and a half, so it seems like a good decision in my case.

My doctor said that not enough people have problems with them for him to automatically remove them. The only time he removes them is if the patient is already having problems. He said that most people who have problems with it after VSG don't have issues for at least 6-9 months after surgery. Since I'm just a couple of weeks out, that puts it at 2014 when I would probably have issues, so I am planning on reducing my deductible on my insurance starting at the beginning of the year, just in case!

I was told that after this surgery that the possibility of having gall bladder probs is high due to the fact that the gall bladder is used to taking the excess fats, could go bad after not getting all that crap since we are eating better food and not fatty foods. With that in mind, the thought of coming back from Mexico after this surgery and the possibility of having to be cut open again freaks me out!!!

If he'll do it and it won't cost a whole lot extra, I would go ahead and have it taken out!

I've heard there's a prescription people take to help prevent gallstones. I'm 10 months post op. Had to have my gallbladder removed 5 months after surgery. I would defiantly look at all of your options. I wish I would've done that. However having gallstones and not removing the gallbladder can cause problem with your pancreas if they get caught. You want to avoid that! Good luck!

Yes my surgeon makes all his sleeve patients take actigal for six months after the surgery.

I take Urso Forte to prevent gallstones. My doc does not automatically take out gall bladders, and does prescribe this medication. He said its 97% effective in preventing stones. He prescribes if for 6 months, during the most rapid weight loss time. Personally, I would not be having any more organs removed unless I had to - it's also not without risk and there is the possibility of long term side effects. Do you have known gall bladder disease?

I am having surgery in 2 weeks. I have chosen to have my gallbladder removed also.. both of my parents, and a sister, had to have theirs out. my daughter had the bypass surgery, and 4 weeks post op she had to have hers removed....

I am having it removed..i have gallstones..but they advised me they would only do it if there are no complications..so i wont know until i wake up..

I think I would have my gallbladder removed to taking any medication for 6 months. Medications of any kind take a toll on your body. I agree if in Mexico the doctor will take it out for a nominal fee I would do so. I had mine out over 20 years ago and have had no problems since.

I had mine out but was already having issues, and had checked and had gall bladder disease. So dr doing sleeve agreed could have out while doing sleeve.

Do it- it's worth it- I had mine out- and many others that were sleeved at the same time did not. They ended up having issues when they lost fast, and they had to have a second surgery not a year after. if you have the money, do it all at once

And you won't want to have to swallow yet another pill for the rest of your life- trust me!
