$25000 Surgery Cost, what did you pay?

Recommended Posts

I was just sleeved two weeks ago as a self pay patient in Nebraska. The total will be about 14' date='500. That includes the hospital, surgeon, anesthesiologist, radiology, and lab. The largest cost to the hospital is 10,000 and they have a program that lets me pay just 150/month. There is no way I could have done it otherwise.[/quote']

Where in Nebraska? I was quoted 16,500 at UNMC.

When I called my insurance company in April (Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare) I was told they would charge me a $150 deductible and that's all. So far, I haven't paid a single co-pay, and the only big ticket item has been for the 3-session psych workshop--which isn't covered by my insurance, so it doesn't take my deductible down at all.

Just to make sure, I'm going to call the insurance company again and verify that I won't have any last-minute bills racking up either before or after my surgery! I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it would be just my luck to have missed a detail somewhere. I'll sleep better getting that information double-checked.

I am having my surgery on Friday June 7th with Dr. Shillingford in Boca Raton and it is all inclusive Labs, EKG, Anesthesiologist, hospital stay for 2.5 days etc. the total cost is $10,500. I did all the checking that is possible on my surgeon and he came out clean as a whiste. I was very impressed with him and his office staff. When I asked why so cheap the answer was simple. He wants people to get help and if insurance won't pay he can make it possible with lower fees.

I paid about 12k total, 7600 to hospital and 4600 to Dr. No wonder healthcare system is so wrecked when you can get a better deal without insurance

This is a lesson of what's wrong with the insurance industry in the United States. I was self-pay in East Tennessee and my total was 14' date='500. If I had gone through my BCBS (not a covered service under my plan) they would have billed BCBS about 25,000. If the cost is 14,500, then why not bill BCBS 14,500?? Oh, that's right..... the insurance companies and execs have to make billions of dollars in profit every year. I broke my arm as a child in 1967 and it cost my father 100. Not trying to get into a political discussion, but our healthcare costs are out of control here. And I don't see anything that's in the works to fix it.[/quote']

So true. I am I East TN also and the doctor I use has a program where self pay is 16.5k. My insurance BCBS was billed about 45k totally for hospital, doctor, anesthesia, etc. Then they did their "allowable" amount bull**** and I ended up paying about 3k out of pocket. All in all very happy, but the amount of variance and excessive billing is phenomenal.

I was self pay and it was 11,999. I then got a bill for twenty six thousand dollars! Scared the crap out of me but when I called they said to ignore it. That's what they would have charged my insurance if I would have had it.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
