This is such a hard topic because my hair is one of the few things I really love about myself. My surgery is june 18. I am 5'9 and my hair is down to my butt. Even though u guys are so optimistic, I was hoping to read a post where someone didn't lose their hair. I'm thinking of donating mine. Better with someone who needs a wig than in my drain I suppose.

Ugh just another one of those I'm trying to come to terms with.

Anonl,

Keep your long hair unless you just WANT to donate it..... you will not go bald...... you will lose what YOU think is ALOT of hair........NO ONE ELSE will notice it........ the loss is just from the anesthesia, and weight loss and the stress on your body. YOU will notice it, MOST others WILL NOT!...... it is a natural result from the shock we have put our bodies thru...... take your Vitamins........ eat your Protein...... vacuum up the hair and fret not, IT WILL GROW BACK!. Best of luck to you~!

Yes its happening to me.. and has been going on 3mo now.. not much can be done im told.. but hey.. I would do it again.. yes I know it will grow back.. but still.. all that hair. .piles and piles.. its getting so thin.. I may have to cut it :( its really long down to my butt.. but im trying to tell myself.. maybe its time to cut it.. so some sexy new short style for now.. new body..new clothes.. New hair? could be.. lol sorry newbies if we are scaring you.. but hey.. we dont sugar coat here.. lol I knew this was coming. But im like.. nah that wont happen to me.. but omg it did.. im very sad about it.. but you know.. I would rather be skinny with thin hair.. small price to pay.. and it will grow back.. so thats ok.. my hubby had surgery too.. but his hair hasnt fallen out.. NO FAIR.. so I like throw my globs of hair in the trash in the bathroom so he can see it. so he knows im heart broken over this.. but hey.. its all good.. im very happy with how I look now... I havent looked like this since I was 18.. best of luck to you.. I hate to tell you it will grow back.. dont worry... but thats all we have to offer.

My sleeve is June 19th.... I already have thin, short hair... I guess I'll just pull a sinead O'conner (or Brittany spears for younger gen) and shave it all off...

Thin and bald is the new beautiful!

Lost my first handful the other day... I freaked out! It's totally normal though. It's a good excuse to try that short haircut you've always wanted!!!

As I'm taking a shower today and watching the drain catcher catch all of my once full hair I ask, why can't my hair on my legs, underarms, and bikini area fall out? Why does it have to be the hair on my head? *le sigh*

Just an FYI short hair shows the Hair loss much more. I know I have short hair and it's starting to fall out, because there are less layers of hair covering the scalp it shows more. :( Also dark hair shows hair loss more than blonde.

Why cant it fall out under your arms or off your legs or anywhere else??? Noooo just off the head!

I am finding that the hair on my legs and under arms seems to grow faster....grrr....I think it is maybe due to the Protein that we are getting? not sure. I just know that it sucks, losing the hair on my head and having to shave more often too. Seems unfair to me.

When I had my lapband 8 years ago I was hit with a quadruple whammy. I started to have Hair loss from the surgery, and then the weight loss. Just as it stopped 9 months post-op my gall bladder had to be removed. Bam, more hair loss from surgery. Then 14 months later I had a grapefruit sized tumor in my uterus that required a partial hysterectomy. And then you guessed it, 7 months later the same tumor cells appeared in my only remaining ovary and it had to come out. That was surgery, and hormone adjustment time. I swear I thought I was going to be bald before it was all over. But rest assured it came back better than ever. Now my band slipped and I have to have it removed and was sleeved at the same time. I am not quite 5 weeks postop, and am dreading the mess from hair loss, but not so much the hair loss itself. I know it will grow back, and I will be thinner and happier when it does.

I guess these posts don't help with the Hair loss, but they do make me feel better that I am not alone in this! I was thinking, "OK, what am I doing wrong?" But I can see that I'm not! It's just a normal side effect. Thanks for the input ladies!!

If I had read some of these posts before being sleeved, I doubt I would have gone through with it! It all sounds so scary! But I am glad I did the sleeve! I would go through it all again if necessary because I can see the results! I have had lots of compliments on my weight loss but not a single comment about my Hair loss. Hang in there and follow your dreams! Anything worth having is worth having to fight for!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
