Indigestion and heartburn are caused by an increased or decreased secretion of acids and other digestive enzymes in the abdomen. Symtoms include burning, a feeling of fullness and gaseousness in the abdomen.

Reflux esophagitis is the medical name for heartburn. The acid reflux is caused by the flow of gastric juices up the esophagus. Indigestion and heartburn are usually caused by overeating, obesity, chocolate, fried foods, carbonated beverages, alcohol, coffee, and cigarettes.

Eliminating these causes is the first step in preventing occurrences of indigestion. Eat small meals, eat slowly, limit intake of Fluid during meals, avoid spicy foods, eat whole-grain carbohydrates such as bread, brown rice, and Pasta, and avoid eating fruit with or after meals.

The following remedies for indigestion can be found in health food stores.

It relieves gas and stomach cramps.

Chamomile in tea or tablet form has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and gas-relieving effects.

Slippery elm bark in tea or tablet form helps form a protective coating in the stomach.

DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is an anti-ulcer agent.

Ginger in tea or tablet form relieves gas and reduces bloating and pain.

Aloe vera gel helps soothe the stomach.

Activated charcoal tablets or capsules are useful for gas pain. Charcoal absorbs medications and should not be taken within two hours of taking any medicine.

To relieve pressure at night, use blocks to raise the head of the bed frame at least 6 inches. This will lessen the pressure on the stomach and prevent stomach contents from moving into the esophagus. Wait a couple of hours after a meal before lying down. sleep on the left side of the body, the stomach is lower when lying on the left side.

Stress, obesity, and pressure on the stomach can cause indigestion.

These causes can be eliminated by participating in regular exercise such as walking, bicycling, swimming, or yoga. Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after a meal.

Aromatherapy can relieve an upset stomach. The following essential herbal oils can be used in an infusion or diluted with almond or olive oil (four drops of herbal oil with an ounce of almond or olive oil) and massaged onto the abdomen:

Peppermint

Marjoram

Fennel

Coriander

Always consult a physician before proceeding with any remedy.

I got this from another thread and thought it was good advice:

:hungry: "No more than one cup of solids at a time. If I had to do it over again, I would measure from day one. Start at 1/2 cup and see how that feels, if I am still truly hungry, move up in 1/4 cup increments."

Hi all

I was just banded on 12/28 (last Thursday). I was initially a BMI of 37, but because of the 11 lbs lost so far (8 lbs from the pre-op liquid diet and three lbs since the surgery) I am now a 35 BMI. Would love to hear from others when they began exercising. Right now -cant even imagine - too much discomfort!!!!

Hi Skinnymom,

I started exercising at week 5. I know others that did it earlier. I think the combination of the surgery side-effects subsiding and losing weight, which increased my energy levels -- helped me start exercising in the last week.

Also, it depends on the exercise you want to do. I wouldn't lift real heavy weights or do anything very strenuous at first.

You'll feel better soon. I think by day 6 or 7 my port pain was subsiding and I was feeling okay.

thanks for the feedback. The person who did my surgery was dr. G. Feilding (from Dr's Ren & Feilding) at NYU in New York. I am still in some pain, mostly on my left side but am getting better each day. a little rough at first. I thought the surgery would be a breeze because a freind had no pain with it. boy was I surprised. I actually felt like I was the odd ball out till I found this terrific website!! thanks for all the input.

I started exercising before my surgery - about 3 months before I started going to the gym again, doing what I could, I wasnt too unfit but I had a very bad ankle so I mainly did the elliptical with Cardio Coach on my MP3 and mucked around on the weights machines.

When I got home from hospital I walked for the first few weeks, 3kms or so, just gentle, until I felt better, then I went back to the gym. After about 2 months I realised that unless I embraced walking (I hate it, find it so boring) I was not going to get in 4 or more sessions a week. I decided to go out one night when I was about 15kg down from presurgery weight and thought I'd add a few little jogging bouts in, expecting to be able to do very little, I actually jogged 3km that night. The rest is history, I combined this with the gym and jogging 3 x per week for a month or two, then I bought a treadmill, quit the gym and really started focussing on jogging 4kms at a time. I picked an event or two to train for, and by October ran my first 7.5kms, then last December I did 10kms and now I run 10kms twice per week and do a few shorter runs as well.

How are the Low BMI ers doing today?

I am on day 4 of pre op. I am drinking my Protein Shake for Breakfast. I am down to 184.5 and I don' understand how I am losing right now. I was at 190. Four pounds fell off after the1st day of pre op, so that must have been Water. Those 4 pounds were from the holidays. I am also supposed to be premenstual and I usually retain a lot of water.

I can't believe this Friday is my day. I am getting nervous now and scared of the unknown.

I hope you all are doing well.

QUESTIONS FOR TODAY

1. What did you eat today? Do you journal? Did you drink enough water?

2. Did you exercise today?

3. What supplements did you take?

4. If you are banded, are you having problems with PBing? Does anyone have any good advice for us who are not banded or newly banded, so we won't PB?

5. How do you feel today?

6. Any words of wisdom for today?

You are working that pre-op diet. You go, Girl!

Supplements: My surgeon requires I take 1500 mg of chewable or liquid Calcium Citrate; Chewable flinstone Complete twice a day or any chewable Multi-Vitamin two times a day and 18mg of Iron twice a day. THE CATCH: The calcium citrate has to be taken at least two hours after the Iron or your body won't absorb it.

I started exercising about a month after surgery, but I didn't do weights or ab stuff until about 2 months out. Now I need to work on being more consistent...

Hey guys, my pre-op diet is a flop so far. I am eating better but I am supposed to be doing liquid diet. Ummm not doing so well with that. I know I won't eat Thursday night or Friday since it is surgery day... but I am feeling crappy about how I have done so far on the diet.

Good for me though, went on a not quite 9 mile bike ride today, so that is something.

supergenius818 - I was just banded 12/28. you should ask your doctor if you cant deal with the protien shakes, if you can follow a diet that is under a certain amount of calories per day. I am highly allergic to milk and soy and could not be on protien shakes since they are all milk or soy based. So my dietician put me on a very very low cal diet. But I was still able to eat food. I think this would be better for you if you are not keeping with the diet since they have you sign a consent form before you go for surgery that if your liver is too enlarged they would have to do an open procedure instead of laproscopic. the reason they give you this pre-op diet is to de-fat your liver. So maybe a low calorie diet will be easier (not easy because it is very low calorie) but easier than just liquieds. hope this was helpful; and hope all goes well for you.       Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
