Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

-How does he handle your medical history? Does he do any tests prior to the surgery?

IF you are an obese but otherwise health person he doesn't require any test prior to surgery.

-How does he go about identifying who is or is not a good candidate for surgery? Is it only based on what we tell him? Or does he request information from your physician?

The nutritionist has a phone interview with you and they go by that and your BMI.

-How far out should I try to schedule my surgery? I will be able to have all the money together by March, so when would be a good time to try and get the ball rolling? Is there a long waiting period?

They want the payment 2 weeks prior to surgery.

-If by some chance I had serious complications and would ever need to have the band removed, does he do that or would I be on my own?

I think he will do that, but you should ask him to be sure.

I think it is a great idea to have all those test done. Your PCP can oversee those. He knows your history best.

Oh Dorky one. I'm sorry to hear that the job search is not going well. I know you don't want to ask for help, but if his parents have offered then you need to take them up on it. I know if my kids were in the same situation, I would do whatever I could to help and I would be MORE upset if they needed help and didn't ask.

Thanks for the response, Julie. I'm sure I will have all my concerns addressed once I started communicating with them. But I just wanted a heads-up. It sounds easy enough! :cursing:

I made a thread in the Post-Op forum but wanted to post it here too for any advice you may have....

I am 25 days post-op. So, last night we got together with some friends and one of them wanted to feel my port. So I told her where to "push" and she did, though she pushed a little harder for my liking. Anyways, she felt it, and that was the end of that.

So I was getting ready for bed last night, and I started to push on my port site to feel it - and I felt a pop. :cursing: It didn't hurt at all, but I felt a slight pop beneath my finger, and I definitely think I heard it pop too. It's been about 14hrs now and I've still not felt any pain at my port site.

Could I have popped a stitch last night? I'm freaking out man! I plan to call my doctor first thing tomorrow, but I'd really like some thoughts now!

Jamie,

If your stitches popped from your muscle I think you would definately feel it. I can understand you stress. I won't be satisfied that my port is ok until my first fill. Remeber you will see Dr. K on Friday. It isn't too far away and I bet there isn't anything you can do until then anyway.

I think that you don't have any pain is a great sign!

Oh wow. I have no idea. I wonder if you might have pushed on the membrane and made it flex a little or something? I can't think that just pushing on it could pop a stitch . . .

Right! Even if I did mess something up, I'm seeing Dr. K on Friday. No pain is a good sign, you're right! Still, it was freaky hearing/feeling a pop; I had trouble going to sleep because I couldn't stop thinking about all the problems I could have just created!!!

I agree, I shouldn't be able to pop a stitch just by pushing on it. Maybe Dr. K will have a few opinions. I still plan to call tomorrow morning!

I had a couple of pops. I wasn't too worried because scar tissue can stretch and break, which makes a popping noise. I haven't had any popping since the first couple of months. So, personally I don't think you broke any stitches.

So... I was really afraid that I would gain over the holiday because I ate crap, didn't exercise, and didn't keep up my Protein. BUT, I LOST 1.5!! Wow. It was hard to worry about the rules when we were traveling, lots of fast food, and I ate some cheese puffs too. Those go down WAY too easy! Anyway, I'm going to be good from now on!

Good job! I have my first fill on Friday and I seriously can't wait. I ate 3 slices of pizza last night, and I've had 5 slices of pizza over the course of the day today. It was thin crust, so it went down just fine. :( Weekends are the worst!

Everything sounds good to me right now! It's driving me nuts. 5 days til FILL!

And that would be why they call it "bandster hell".

It will be over soon. And then you'll be on your losing way!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
