I'm a lover of many different types if ethnic foods. I was wondering I anyone has problems with any types in particular or just can't handle them at all....this would be a real bummer for me since I'm due to have surgery on march 22...

I haven't had any trouble with any type of food...sometimes ice cream, but that's a blessing for me!

The only thing that sucks for me is not being able to drink with meals when food is spicy.

I love ethnic food to. I make curry chicken, chicken mole, Thai, etc. The only thing I miss is having the rice along with it, or pad noodles:(

I've only had a few tiny nibbled of rice, cause my Nut says never again to it. But when I talk to others who have been sleeved they eat it. Sometimes its very confusing with so many different Nut and Drs, all saying different things. As long as you can handle the spices you can still eat your ethnic foods. I find since surgery with me is that I like all my food more spicier than before:)

I haven't been out eating much ethnic, but I have eaten a fair amount of spicy and have been fine. Drinking while eating can be a challenge so the spicy can be tricky. I put chipolte Tabasco on just about everything I eat.

Most everything is fine, except for pho, because there is SO much of it. I try to limit the amount of noodles, too.

I'm thinking since this is not just an American procedure any and all types of food are tolerable at some point post-op

LOL... Unless everyone around the world converts to American foods post-op :D

Is brown rice even off the table for you, JP69? When I asked my NUT, I was told limit the quantity and not until I'm at least a few months out, but the occasional small serving of brown rice would be okay if I tolerate it.

I love pho, but I expect that after the surgery I'll just have a little of my husband's now and again. I can live without the noodles if I can have the broth and the meat!

Everyone in our class was told no rice, Pasta, bread, ever! But I'm finding thats not to true.

Well there are plenty of reasons to not eat any of that stuff again if you can avoid it. But this is the real world, and my NUT's philosophy is pretty much about mindful choices and all things in very controlled moderation.

Our diet plan days to avoid these things, too, and why to avoid them. But we're also told that nothing is really completely off limits if you tolerate it well, exercise control about portion size and frequency, and are mindful about the likely impacts to our diet and adjust our calorie intake and exercise to accommodate the occasional indulgence.

Not sure what you consider ethnic but I've had Mexican, Chinese, Thia, Italian, Japanese and Puerto Rican food since surgery and not a problem. I'm 4 months out now. You should be fine, everything in moderation. The only thing I can see being an issue potentially would be very spicy foods and not being able to drink (that would be an issue for me anyway) I've even been okay with rice and Pasta in small amounts.

My nutirionist says no starches until nine months out - and then only whole grains - IF I have lost three quarters of my excess weight.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
