Hi all. It's nice to see a site for us of the Hebrew persuasion. Any other Jew's in the Greater Toronto Area?

I'm in LA. Banded April 30th and having trouble getting to soft foods. I've been through 3 Shabbasim and it's not easy to watch everyone else eat, even when I didn't have to cook as friends brought food over for me. The toughest is freshly baked challah! I'm trying to just enjoy the aroma -LOL.

A young friend came over last week as he had nowhere else to go while in town, and he said he could eat challah and indeed, had a slice during his meal. I was surprised. Guess there are many surprises ahead (if I can ever get to regular food again!).

I'm just happy the hagim are OVER! Sukkah is down, and no more big meals. I haven't lost in a couple of weeks- I move two up, two down, and I think it's the weird eating and constant eating in other homes. And Challah! I never serve it. We use whole wheat pita and I don't always wash anymore. Most the time, but not always. But it's good to get back to controlling my food more.

Hey, Gwen

Yes, Succos being over is a relief. My weight loss definitely slowed over the chagim

Personally, I use whole wheat matzah on shabbos and I find it's fine. the crunchy-ness lets it go down easy. BUT I have to eat a drop - then i have my chicken Soup, THEN my fish and enough Matzah to let me "bentsch."

There are a lot of special considerations to being an Orthodox Bandster, I find. Do you find that as well?

Depends. Are you Cholev Stam? if so, you have a LOT more options. Personally, I am Cholev Yisroel BUT my Rav made exception for nutrition stuff because that's what my MD said to do, so i drink a Myoplex shake and a Carnation Instant Breakfast (sugar free) every day. Both are chocolate. Actually, i blend the Carnation Instant Breakfast INTO the Myoplex, bec. the Myoplex by itself tastes like - a Protein Drink - not my favorite flavor in the world. the two together taste quite good actually, very chocolatey. I put in froz. cherries, or Peanut Butter (just a tad) or a tsp of coffee disolved in a Tbsp of Water, to make other flavors, like chocolate cherry, etc.

My BIG issue is shabbos. I still don't have a solution for Shabbos day. I am TIGHT in the AMs, but keep trying to eat Shabbos lunch. I never learn! which means I throw up once a week.

Also, do you excercise? that helps to break a plateau.

Does anyone know of a good kosher (dairy or parve, of course) whey or egg based Protein supplement? My son needs to increase his calories (I should have such problems) and was told to take Protein supplements. Unfortunately, none of the standard brands in the grocery stores have heksures (did I spell that correctly????) and he doesn't want to depend on only soy products.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am attaching a link to the best and yummiest whey protein I found with the OU on it! Dairy, but delish. This website has it the cheapest, but you can also find it at koshervitamins.com.

Bodybuilding.com - Integrated supplements Whey Protein Isolate - 100% Natural CFM Whey! On sale now!

If anyone would like to have my two remaining canisters (opened but neither were ever used - I mixed one canister of Mint chocolate flavored into Dutch chocolate - OMG it is SO GOOD), let me know. I live outside of Philadelphia and would even ship it to you.

Good luck! By the way, I'm kosher but not shomer, and am probably considered "conservadox" by most people. I'd love to hear more about the support group though if you'd have me as a lurker.

Personally, I like Myoplex (from EAS) you can get it at Walmart and at Target, it is a combo of soy and whey protein. The only drawback is it is OU-D which some people do not rely on. (if you are what is known as "cholov yisroel")

I really want to create a yahoogroups group for kosher bandsters, (so that takes care of your religious affiliation, Amy) but have no time to manage a group right now. It will have to go on my backburner of projects for when I have "leisure time" (which, and I'm not complaining about this, will be not anytime soon because my business and kids are consuming my life, which I can't complain about at all)

PS, I am THRILLED! I have officially lost 41 pounds! To me, that's amazing. I've managed to lose as much as 25-30 pounds pre-band but never as much as 41 pounds.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
