Three meals a day... No snacking!?

Recommended Posts

Was anyone else told to follow this for the long haul?

I was reviewing my bariatric surgery binder and noticed that stage IV (final stage) states to eat three meals a day, spaced out 3-4 hours from each other, without snacking in between.

I'm sure it's the old fat girl in me that finds this to sounds difficult. Are you guys able to carry on throughout your day without having food outside of your three standard meals? (When I say Snacks, I don't mean chips and candy... I mean nuts or cheese...)

I was told 6 small meals even if one of those meals is simply a bite of something. I usually end up consuming about 4 teeny meals though, but I am only 32 days post op. (nn)

I do 5 small meals a day- and don't eat anything in between. I don't pay attention to timing- I eat when it's convenient or when I feel like I need to. I was told three meals and two Snacks, but my NUT looks at it like I do- 5 small meals. Helps keep your metabolism going- and we need that.

Im 12 weeks out and I actually eat a couple of ounces of food (90% of the time its protein) every couple of hours. Breakfast Ill have a couple of ounces of lowfat cottage cheese or a 1/2 cup of skim milk then a couple hours later Ill have an ounce of soy nuts or a piece or 2 of turkey Jerky then a couple hours later its lunch time and Ill have a couple ounces of lean meat with a half slice of cheese then a couple hours later Ill have a very small handful of blackberries (I love my fiber) then for dinner I usually have a tilapia filet (it takes me about an hour to eat it) then if I want a snack Ill have a few bites of watermelon or an ounce of nuts. I think everyone's metabolism is different but my likes it when I keep it busy all day and as long as the scale move in the right direction, Im totaly good with it.

When I eat I can barely eat a couple bites because I get full. Then I go d myself hungry a couple hrs later. It's easier to eat 6 small healthy meals .

That's kind of what I was thinking.

Also makes sense! I know pre-surgery that was what I was always told to follow to keep my body burning. Now I'm being told three meals no Snacks. I was thinking maybe that would be sufficient to keep my fueled and still low enough to keep me burning the fat stored in my body.... ???

I was told the same thing. They said that that fasting periods between meals were essential to burning fat. They said if I keep giving my body fuel it won't turn to that stores fat to burn it.

That is what I figured. How far out from surgery are you?

I was told the same thing, mainly because the predominant culture and workplace doesn't support frequent meals/snacking. I have been doing 3 meals, but usually do have something when I get home from work between lunch and dinner, because my lunch break is at 11 am, (only 22 minutes long, since I'm a teacher), and we don't usually eat dinner until at least 6 pm. I don't have a problem with this. I need the time in between to get my minimum 8 cups of Water in!

Yes! Three meals only does make it easy to time your Water intake. I didn't think of that. :)

But the way the body works is think of a camp fire, the fire is burning( metabolism) you keep adding pieces of wood to keep it going(food) but you de id to put a bigger log because u r tired of feeding the fire. If u notice the log takes a long time to burn out( large meal). Do u see where im going with this. The small meal burn up quicly. Another way to explaine it, our bodies are made to go into survival mode if its not being fed it gets scared and holds the food for dear life (starving) but when you feed it every 2_3 hours it think ok I can burn this up because im getting more(weight loss)

I think it depends on how much you can eat for a meal. Most of our meals are not really meals as they are quite small. If that is the case then you might need a snack. If you can eat a reasonable size meal then a snack might not be necessary

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
