Alternative to Protein Shake?

Recommended Posts

I am right there with you. I never thought I would be tired of shakes, but I am so tired of sweet I can't stand it. I have taken to the Unjury chicken Soup. I need to try the unflavored in koolaid again and try that. Seems more palatable that way.

When I'm not in the mood for a shake, I can usually handle something lighter and warm. Someone above mentioned the unjury chicken Soup Protein - when I was in my first month post-op that stuff was a godsend to me. Other things I did:

--8 oz. beef broth mixed with a scoop of unflavored Protein and steak seasoning

--miso soup mixed with a scoop of unflavored protein

--chai tea mixed with a half scoop of vanilla protein

When you are mixing Soups and broths with Protein powder, make sure you use a food thermometer and keep the temp under 140 degrees.

There are also protein powders and mixes specifically made to be mixed with hot liquids. For these, you don't need to keep them under 140 (for the most part, be sure to check the directions just in case) but you shouldn't mix with with anything that is simmering or boiling:

--premade protein soups: http://www.bariatricchoice.com/bariatric-diet-soups.html#. (my advice - skip the ones with noodles, they are nasty)

--powders specifically for Hot drinks, such as hot chocolate, that you mix with water: http://www.bariatricchoice.com/bariatric-diet-protein-hot-drinks.html -- I get the classic hot chocolate and doctor it up with sugar free syrups such as cinnamon brown sugar Syrup, peppermint syrup, caramel syrup, etc.

Good luck!

Right after surg is the hardest! It's so true, Protein I loved prior I couldn't handle after. At almost three months out, Syntrax Nectar is still the one I use the most. Roadside Lemonade, Fuzzy Naval and Twisted cherry are my favorites. And you can dilute with Water and Crystal Lite type powders. After surgery, creamy or milk added Protein Drinks were nauseating to me.

i found Protein Powder shakes to be way too sweet for me after surgery. even now, at almost three months post op, i can't stomach a Blender Bottle shake. i can only drink pre-made shakes. i vary between the Premier Protein chocolate ones (cheapest at bjs/costco) and the pure Protein ready to drink chocolate and vanilla. i only pick those up at Walmart because i don't have a costco membership and bj's doesn't sell them.

I got Swanson tortilla Soup flavored broth and loved the unflavored Unjury in it. Its fine if it's hot enough to leave your finger in it...dont use it too hot. This was also excellent with a little refried Beans when I moved to the next step. Also the chicken flavored injury was awesome in instant mashed potatoes. My nut suggested that one.

I liked the Gold Standard whey Protein powder mixed with a packet of Starbucks Via Instant Decaf and Water. I used a blender ball. Mixing in the blender made it too foamy. Cottage cheese is high in Protein when you are allowed it.

I hear y'all. I was happily drinking my Premier chocolate until right after surgery. Gag!! But it was all I had. Eventually, I got back to drinking it without feeling bad. Still ... am sooo tired of just that. I'm waiting on an order of Syntrax strawberry Kiwi. Should be here tomorrow. I'll let you know if I like it.

Next thing I'm gonna do is get the unflavored and start adding it to other foods. Sounds like a good way to get the whey in. (ha ha .. get it ... ha ha ... way to get the whey!!) Ok, well at least I enjoy my humor! LOL

I've been wondering abt these! What's the consistency like? My surgery is Monday and I've yet to find ANYTHING that doesn't make me gag

They are not very thick. My NUT adds milk to the fuzzy naval kind but I've never tried that.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
