Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Recommended Posts

the first couple of days were brutal. If I sat for a while then got up' date=' my foot really hurt badly. Getting out of bed in the am was tough too. I stayed off the treadmill for about a week, and haven't run on the pavement since. I'm just gutting it out now, stretching it out, icing it down when I can. Also I don't walk barefoot or wear flipflops. If it doesn't get better I may go get shot of cortisone so that I can keep running. I have a 5k schedule in June, so I can't let up.[/quote']

I know you may find this counterintuitive, but going barefoot actually helps with the plantar fasciitis. By going barefoot you give the muscles and tendons in your foot a chance to get stronger and more flexible. By wearing heavy motion control shoes the tissues in your feet atrophy because they don't do anything. Just something to think about.

Yes' date=' he's big with the RunDisney folks. He actually spoke at the last event I was at and I walked right on by. D'oh! I also missed Ali Vincent (biggest loser winner from awhile ago)! I'm still bummed about that.

And yeah- I've seen the walk/run people finish with decent times. Not too shabby for doing some walking.[/quote']

So I've been reading his book and I decided to give it a try today. I must say I really liked it. I downloaded an app called "seconds pro" which is just a HIIT/tabata timer app. I set it up to go off at 2 minutes and then again 30 seconds later...and then repeat. So I ran for 2 minutes and walked 30 seconds for the entire 5.4 miles. I felt great and never got tired. Amazingly, my time was about 20 seconds faster per mile than usual and that's with the walking breaks included. I assume it was because I was running faster than usual plus I never got tired so I didn't slow down the second half. If anything I got faster. I'm going to keep experimenting with this to determine if I think it will help me run a marathon.

I knew it would be less tiring, but Galloway's book said I would improve my time but I didn't believe it. I'm hoping to use this to run a full marathon this year. Anyone want to run the Honolulu marathon in December?

It seems counter intuitive and sacrilege to be walking during a timed competition if you are there to be running. However, good if it helps a person finish in same amount of time or better.

I am on post op day 3. I have downloaded the couch to 5 k app also. That is my goal. The way I feel now, I won't be able to run for a while, when did you start? How many weeks/months out???

For most people their Drs say to return to full exercise after 6 weeks. As far as running, I guess it depends where you were at pre op. you should be up and around now and doing more and more walking everyday. You'll know when you're ready to start week one of the app.

Congratulations on your commitment!

Good luck,

Deano

You know, I had that same mind set too. And when I did my half marathon, I told myself I was going to allow myself to take walk breaks "as needed." I didn't want it to be a death march to the finish line, but that's basically what happened. I felt so good and was quite caught up in the event, I hardly walked at all. The last 3 miles were very painful. My hamstrings and calves were extremely tight and sore. It was all I could do to keep my form together but I managed. Meanwhile, people are passing me left and right and I keep seeing them taking walk breaks quite often.

I could hear people's alarm go off and they'd start to run. It was then I knew they weren't just walking because they were out of shape. So I talked to one lady and she told me about Galloway's book. When I read the part about finishing less tired, well that was no surprise. But the part about actually finishing faster, that seemed like crazy talk. Today's run proved to me that it's certainly possible. I don't want to jump to any huge conclusions based on one run but if it continues to work I have no problem being a run/walker. Especially over longer distances.

You know me, speed isn't my main concern. Finishing....and not feeling like I got hit by a truck afterward....are my main drivers. But if it actually gets me there faster, isn't that the point of a race?

Suddenly I'm very excited about doing a full marathon.

Think of it like HIIT training. I'm running faster doing the running portion and recovering during the walk breaks.

I think we all think, "Walk?! WTF, I've worked hard to be able to run non-stop. I'm amazing!" Okay, well not so much with the amazing, but there is a since of pride, almost elitism.

So, it just so happens that I'm doing a 10 miler next weekend and a new running friend is doing it too! I'm excited for her, but her longest run is 7 miles. My original thought was to run the first five and then take walking breaks and then I remembered BTB's post about Galloway. I did some looking and she's down for trying out the galloway method. We are going to run 4 minutes and then walk 1 minute. Am I crazy to think that she should be able to do this? I'm thinking that this should make the 10 miles definitely doable. I already told her that she is probably going to be sore because that's a three mile distance increase. She just wants to finish the event upright (HECK- we've all been here. LOL ) She wants to run most of it. Who knows? I might fall in love with it too??

Wow, it's only 115 bucks until May 25th!! I was also surprised to see that they don't cap entrants. Hmmm. The race is affordable and that would be a SUPREME first marathon!! Now, I just got to figure out to get the dh on board with finances - airfare, hotel, etc. I've never been and it's always been on our list of places...

I'll definitely keep you posted. You doin it?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
