My doctor said no carbonation for the first 3 months while the staple line healed. I'm 18 months post op and I drink diet coke or dr.pepper 10 every day and haven't had any problems with it. A lot of people on here don't drink carbonation at all though. My doctor said the sleeve can't be stretched but some on here disagree.

I just drank too many and I don't want to go back to drinking them- I have a friend that had RNY and she can have one a day now, I think after a certain point you can have them in moderation but if I am going to have something that is not good for me I would rather have a glass of wine or chocolate- Just a choice of what we want I guess.

My nutrionist said that since the stomach is smaller now there is no where for the bubbles to go but up and out and can be very uncomfortable. But I imagine it effects everyone differently. I've not had the nerve to drink my ole favorite A&W Root Beer yet lol

I made the decision that if I was going to crawl up on a table and let a surgeon cut out my perfectly good stomach, then I would do what it takes to make my self as healthy as possible. So no soda for me. That was my choice and I am committed to it. But it is just my choice and I am not advocating that for anyone else. There are a couple of schools of thought, some being about the bubbles, some being about the chemicals in the soda, some being about studies saying that diet soda leads to other bad eating habits. Soda is no big deal to me anymore and I was a big Diet Coke with Lime and Diet Dr. Pepper drinker. I feel so much better without that in my world now. Like the OP said, a fine glass of wine or a great piece of chocolate now has more appeal.

I'm with you on the great piece of chocolate. If I have to pick my poisons let it be a good one lol.

I'm really not sure of the reason, I know my doctor says no, never. I wasn't ever a big coke drinker, maybe five or six a YEAR, and it had to be fountain over ice......but I know some doctor's say carbonation is ok after a certain length of time. I agree with what the previous posters said....the bubbles may be uncomfortable and it wasn't a habit and Lord knows I don't need to risk starting a habit I didn't previously have. :) Also, I know that since there is so little tummy left, you don't want to risk irritating it. Aren't soft drinks hard on our stomachs, diet or otherwise? I was at a support group meeting this week and we had a speaker from Whole Foods, she had worked there 14 years and spoke to us for an hour and a half. Labels, what to look for, how we should not believe anything on the front of a box, can or carton.....it's marketing!!! LoL She specifically mentioned how hard sodas are on our bodies and even with diet sodas, our bodies are not benefitted at all with them and in fact, the sodium amount is alarming. If the doctor says no, I'm fine with it, it's not like he said I could never have coffee again, or a medium rare steak!!!

Previous to my surgery I drank many diet cokes a day and no Water. I was totally addicted and had been for years. Have not had one post surgery and so glad to be done with carbonation. Now I drink flavored water. My surgery was feb 4th and have lost 54 lbs.

My doctor's instructions were no sodas for six weeks, then I was free to try adding diet soda if I wished and if it was comfortable for me to drink them. I'm three months out and I've had a few diet sodas since my surgery and it felt absolutely no different on my sleeved tummy than it did prior to surgery. Personally, I don't believe that sodas are something that is good for ANYONE, sleeved or not, to drink on a daily basis, but I do enjoy it on occasion.

Other reasons why people avoid diet soda:

Their doctor/nut told them to.

It is uncomfortable on their sleeves.

They've turned over a healthy new leaf and soda no longer fits into their new lifestyle.

They avoid artificial sweeteners.

They believe that the carbonation WILL stretch their sleeves.

They see soda as a "slippery slope" and a gateway to other foods.

They see themselves as "soda addicts" and do not feel they can ever consume it in moderation so they feel it's best to avoid it all together.

One of my friends stretched his sleeve from Coke. That's enough to keep me away.

Remember those scenes from the Alien movies where the parasite rips itself from the host through the chest? That's what Diet Coke does to your new sleeve

True story. <_<

I have sips of cold drinks here and there and I'm 5 months out. No problems here but then again, I'm not drinking much of it when I do have it

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
