Protein Powders Drinks etc Aussies only

Hi,

Just like to enquire with everyone who has had to partake in the Protein supplements, of what brands and flavours you have had personal experience with, which was your favourite and best tasting and which you would not touch again in a famine!? I'm asking as I would like to find a new one but don't wants to spend $100's buying many to try.

I'll start it off.

I've tried:

whey Less- choc, strawb, vanilla, coffee.

I could only stomach the chocolate, actually quite like that flavour, all the others made me feel pretty nauseous.

I have to say though that none are overly sweet and they don't have the horrible protein aftertaste.

Proto-Whey - choc/coffee (friend gave me some to try) didn't like as found it way too sweet and sickly and I could taste the protein -yuk.

MRM - Unflavoured, I think we all know what unflavoured whey Protein powder tastes like - not pleasant, but at least you can mix it in Soups and sauces and I have heard you can put it in with jelly too, but I'd have to eat a whole jelly to get 15g of protein in, not worth it IMO.

Natures Way Shannan Pontons Chocolate (you can buy it from Woolies)

-Foul, with a capital F! That's the only way I can describe it, strong protein taste and horrible flavour.

Well these are the only ones I've tried, I'd love to hear what my fellow Aussies have.

Has anyone tried Iso Whey? I am led to believe it is made by the same company who does the Whey Less, the ingredients are almost identical, I'd like to try it but want to know what others think

Thanks everyone, hope I read done good stuff here!

I had to do pre op diet for two weeks. Lost about 5 kg first week then just 1.5 the second. Had Optifast for three meals as well as about a cup of non starchy veggies each day. I guess I was really lucky' date=' I didn't get cravings or anything until maybe three days before my surgery and that was because I went to a Xmas party. I did go off the wagon a little but only to have a little stirfry fish LOL I know I felt great for first two days, then third to fifth I felt like poop. Then after that it was all good. HAd headaches in those yucky two to three days but went away. After surgery I felt really good, little pain in first 24 hours, but nothing the PCA didn't fix! Make sure you make good use of it if you are given one. Get up and walk as soon as possible, I did the day after op and never looked back really, although I was quite tired for up to a few weeks after the fact. Walking really and truly helps with gas pain in your stomach, bowels and shoulders. I spent six nights in hospital, no complications or anything other than gas pain in shoulders, i have very low blood pressure normally and they were a little worried about that, but that's just me normal. I didn't mind staying in one bit, it was really pleasant to have a "holiday" away from my boys :-) and my surgeon wasn't in any hurry for me to go home. You will probably have days where you feel like super woman, trust me, don't overdo it or else your body will definitely let you know, just take or easy and concentrate on getting well. Make sure you get in your Water, yes it's a royal pain in the bum, but it's so important. I'm three months out now and if I don't get between 2.5 and 3 litres a day, my body lets me know and boy do I feel it, not nice at all. You'll both do great, where are you and who are your surgeons?[/quote']

Thanks for the fantastic advice mini.mee.

Sounds like your going well. I'm getting excited and looking forward to it. I just have to get through my 2 night shifts this week end and then I'm on the home run.

Cheers Aussie

Oh and don't be disappointed if you put on weight in the first week or so after your op, it's pretty standard from what I can gather, and yes, I put on a kilo, I was still on a drip until day before I went home.

I really recommend using a tracking program for your protein/water/calories etc although would not worry at all about calorie intake in first few weeks. Most people use "my fitness pal". It's great if you have an iPhone or android as you can use it both on the web and your phone. It really helps you account for what your eating or what you should be and aren't getting enough of. Hope that makes sense :-)

Oh Aussie, that's great, I remember how excited I was!

You will do fine, just as everyone else told me and its so true, I am so happy to have done this, I just have a gallbladder problem now, wish I would have spoken to my surgeon before my op and he could have taken it out at same time. Not everyone has this problem after surgery but its very common and I do recommend asking your surgeon beforehand. I'm now on a public wait list as I can't really afford another private op so close to the last, but I'm really positive things will work out for me anyway.

Wow that's no good I hope you don't have to wait too long. I've already had my Gallbladder out infancy after next Friday there's not much left in me to take out. Hahaha. Why don't you ask your surgeon if he will do you in z public hospital as a private patient. They will bulk bill you then. Most surgeons are attached to a public hospital and usually have private op lists as well. Go back and ask your GP to find you a Dr who does or ask your sleeve surgeon if he will help out since your already a patient. I'm a nurse so I know how the system works. It's not what you know it's how to use it to its full capacity is the Health systems motto and mine. I had two ill kids so know the system very well.

Good luck Sue

Yes, I'm going for my VSG checkup on the 12th and am definitely asking my surgeon if he can help me out in any way. I don't expect charity but if there was somehow that he could perform the surgery, I'd be a lot more confident about it.

Do surgeons normally charge more in a private hospital?

I am sure I would be able to pay my insurance excess again, just not over gap, which realistically, most surgeons charge way over that.

I happen to LOVE metrx. It's pretty high on protein but I love the taste.

Guys I'm on my pre-op diet day 1....and my nutritionist is not responding, so can I ask is celebrity slim ok as a protein shake? ....BTW they are delicious, especially strawberry, not overbearingly sweet and with water its really smooth to drink...

Hey,

Just had a look at the nutritional info online.

Comparing them with Optifast (OF) the energy is similar 635kj OF vs 869kj CS

The Protein is similar 17.1g OF vs 18.7 CS

The real difference is the carbs 15g OF vs 26g CS

That's a lot more carbohydrates, and would add up to a bit with a few Meal Replacements a day. So it's going to depend how much that is of an issue for them.

Sorry to be the bearer of (possibly) bad news!

I really appreciate that... I wish they'd get back to me ... I'm gonna take the CS until told otherwise ... It's better than filling up on rice and pasta??!! ... Especially in my portion sizes lol... Day 1 and I'm on the worst shake on the shelf ! GREAT!

It's def not the worst, don't panic.

Thanks for the Support... Honestly it is so so soooo comforting... my brain is in meltdown - its amazing to feel how much food has such a firm grip on me.

They might say CS are fine so I wouldn't sweat it :)

In any case using it until you can speak to them won't matter.

Good luck,

Deano

OMG Dean, I just read that your surgeon was George, he's doing mine as well at the holy spirit... tell me a bit about your experience - PLEASE!!!

Whats the hospital like ? - what was your pain/gas pains like? - how is his bed-side manner? - I'm getting mine after 11.30am ... was yours early in the morning or close to midday like mine?
