Shortness=slower weight loss?

Recommended Posts

My doc told me today that the reason im losing slower is bc im short 4'10, and i started at 201.5 day of surgery. Anyone else with same experience?

I guess the shorter you are the smaller your muscles are and the slower your loss. I hadn't really thought of it.

I think the upside then must be smaller losses in weight have a bigger impact on your BMI. Maybe focus on that?

I'm 4'11" and don't think it has anything to do with height. I don't see tall ppl losing faster than short ppl. It just depends on you.

True. What i should have said was heavier people. Doc told me that ppl who get surgery at 350-500 lbs lose more faster bc they have alot to lose. But i started at 42 bmi and today its 36. So im happy with 30+ in 6 weeks :) its better then gaining

I don't think 30 pounds in six weeks is losing slowly. I've lost 31 pounds in eight weeks and I don't think that's slow! You didn't start out as big as some other people (neither did I. My BMI was 35.6) so you can't expect to lose as quickly as some people who have 200+ pounds to lose.

I don't think it has to do with being shorter. Probably more to do with having less to lose. The higher your BMI, the faster you seem to lose. The closer you are to your goal weight, the slower the weight seems to come off.

I'm 5'3" and was 219 pre op and 212 on my day of surgery 9/26/12.

I've lost 56 or so lbs (16 weeks if you include the 2 weeks prior to surgery when I lost 7 lbs). I lost a lot at first and since have had a few stalls where I didn't lose for 2 weeks.

I'm not sure if that is slow or typical for vsg patients or how that compares to other short people.

What? You started this thread saying you were losing slow. You're not losing slow. 5 pounds a week is not slow. You're doing great.

I've lost 55 lbs in 3.5 months and I'm 5' 3". I'm very happy with my loss. I think you're doing great as well. Word of advise, never compare your journey or loss to anyone elses. We are all so different and no two journeys will ever be the same. Be proud of every single pound lost. You've worked hard for it no matter the time it takes to lose it...fast, slow or average. Keep up the good work.

I am 7 weeks out, 5'1 and I was 199.5 on day of surgery. I'm at 180, and went from a size 22 to a size 18. I would love to have lost 30 pounds by now, but I know that in a years time, I will be where I want to be, or sooner. I am staying the course, and eating within the perimeters given to me. Feels like a job sometimes, but I still feel like it's the best decision I ever made for myself!

Having a lower BMI and less weight to lose, it's easy to get discouraged when seeing others pounds shed in short amounts of time....but I just tell myself that many are taking months to get to 200 pounds; so it makes sense that it's going to take time for me to get down, too.

Best of luck to you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
