Why do we candy coat everything?

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry, but lately I am just getting annoyed with how we are trying to make everything sound less offensive.

And the result is that As a whole we all become hypersensitive and lose ownership of our actions and the result.

The last straw for this to me was the recent "Sandy Hook school shootings". WTF, why don't we ca it what it really is? It was the "Sandy Hook Massacre". And the guy that killed all those people was not a "shooter" he was a murderer, or a lunatic, or a monster. Shooters are hunters & recreational target shooters.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest I'm going to bring it a bit closer to home. I've been guilty of calling myself a "foodie". In reality, it's not that cute. I am a full blown "food Addict". I ate too much too often and the wrong things. It was not cute, and didn't deserve a cute little term like "foodie". I was murdering myself slowly & painfully. I don't think I'm alone in this.

Amen OTR you are not alone! I to was killing myself with food, thank God I heard about this surgery. I feel like I found out just in the nick of time, I had so many health problems it was awful. I was a food addict and thank goodness I don't even see food the same now, I feel like I have been given a new lease on life!

Fishy didn't sugar coat things, people here got pissed and he was banned by the admin (which you are one of apparently), that being said I agree.

Fishy didnt sugar coat things, which is fine in my book, but he's took it a step further and was outright rude and directed it to specific people. I wasn't aware that he had been banned because when he made things so personal and mean I stopped follow threads he was posting on. I'm here for support and yes, honest opinion, but I don't need to read arguments and bickering and put downs. If I wanted that I'd watch reality TV!

Well said, OTR! I agree more people need to take responsibility for their actions in life. And yes, I was a food addict too! I used to use the cute little name Foodie too, but you are right...it isn't cute. It is just a cute way of saying "kill yourself a little quicker eating junk you don't need!"

Thanks for posting what most of feel and know and all should be able to own up to.

Hmmmmm, damned if you do and damned if you don't. Some like the soft approach and others don't. You will never get everyone to agree or like everything. Such is life........

I'm going to date myself with this comment.....eons and many moons ago that word was originally 'coined' to mean someone who had refined tastes. Not someone who overate. As the English language tends to do so well, it bastardized it and now it means 'person who eats too much.'

Scrabble anyone? ;-). Actually, I banned myself from that and Word w Friends 'cause i was getting nothin' done!!

I guess as we raise a generation that didn't allow winners and losers in gym class, or their homework to be graded in red ink.we will have more and more adults who are prone to massage ugly reality with b.s. terms and concepts into more tolerable events ,albeit fantasy ! Now don't get me going with our new currency minus the "in god we trust"

Ok so I agree. So here goes I wasn't obese....I was a fat @ss. I wasn't a foodie....I was a freaking pig. Unfortunately I never realized any of this until I was post op.

I guess I'll just put it out there.

I am more academic than emotional and have lost a lot of patience with this political correctness or uber editing of comments in fear of offending someone. People who are easily offended are going to be offended by something no matter what. Some want to be handled with pearly white kid gloves with soft fabric. This dilutes some of the passion of the human experience. If you only want to hear what pleases you and supports your point of view, then you probably need to grow up. We are all much more complex than that. I am not easily offended. I want to hear the sinew, guts and soul of something, not the edited, whitewashed, watered down and overall diluted version. I respect those who have the guts to damn the torpedoes and put themselves out there. If you are so fragile that you cry when you touch the wings of a moth and some dust vaporizes, then you and I are probably not going to be able to have a very meaningful interaction. If you have not elected to take advantage of resources and advice provided by your surgeon, NUT, or the vast information available on the internet, then I am not interested in communicating with you. Personal responsibility is part of adulthood.

With that said, I am not perfect. I don't expect anyone else to be. But I don't want to hear whining nor see questions about very obvious information that can be easily researched by a 30 second web search. I am, and we all are, processing through a project of "self" where accountability and information are important. Anyone who wants support in being less accountable or making excuses are not interesting nor a good investment in my time. Do what you want. I really don't care. If your questions or feelings are informed and sincere, then that is different. Some just don't want to feel like they are alone in their experience and need validation for their current feelings.

You want to send me to your banned list? I couldn't care less. I do not ever need outside validation from another person. That is the level of "self actualization" on Maslow's Hierarch of Needs.

I agree. As far as this forum goes, I think some people use the "I'm not going to candy coat" as an excuse to be an @$$hole! There's no reason to personally attack someone who is struggling.

Personal, rude, mean attacks are not okay....but neither is sugar coating. There is a happy medium, a way to get your point across without being a d**k & without condoning destructive behavior. Some people on this forum are on a personal mission to be rude enough to shock people onto action, and some are on here to give unending support even if it does make them a factor in bad decisions. I think both sides take it too far. And then people call each other out for brig "rude" and are just as rude themselves. Whatever, ill say what I have to say and if someone is offended then they can just skip over my opinion, can't they?

And for the record, fishy didn't just have a strong opinion, sometimes he was an outright d**k and that's what got him banned, I'm sure.

Why do I tend to candy coat things? Well..cause my momma always told me if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Unless it's about myself, then I can be scathing...I'm my own worst critic. Never gave myself the "foodie" title....I'm a glutton, and a carb addict, plain and simple.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
