Steady, stalls and occasional falls.....

Hi Everyone

I am feeling a bit frustrated. I had my VSG on 11.28. My preop weight was 239, and four weeks later I am 220.

I stalled at 3 weeks, at 223, now down a few more.

I know I should probably stay the heck off the scale for a few weeks, but I can't help myself..I just slide that sucker out from my bed and hop on each and every morning. Dumb, I know......

I feel like I could be one of those failures that won't lose most of their weight. I will be that one exception to the rule....

I eat my Protein, and try to drink my requisite Fluid intake. Exercise is difficult, as I have fairly debilitating left hip arthritis (surgery this summer for replacement)

When do I get worried? I keep seeing these huge weight drops from all of you, and I get discouraged.

No youre doing great. My loss was slow and steady, never any huge amounts but every lb adds up.

It's hard but have faith. I was discouraged early on as well but trust me your doing good. A lot of people have Water retention and lose lots of water weight and lbs at first. Not everyone is the same in losing but we all do and if you are following your plan your going to as well!!!

It will happen, don't worry. I was sleeved a bit over a month before you. I hit a stall for about 2-3 weeks where I wasn't losing an ounce (and yes, I weigh every day, too!) For me, the change came when I actually added a bit more carbs to my diet. I'm not saying it will work for you and I'm still doing low carb, but I went from about 25-30 grams a day to about 50-60 (not every day). Since then, I've lost about 10 pounds. So try shaking up your routine a bit. Increase/decrease your Protein or carbs. Try walking a bit (if you're able to.) It gets your body out of its rut. Good luck!

I forgot to mention that my official starting weight was actually 247 (lost some pre-pre op). It's funny, but my stall broke only when I ate a bit more. Seems contrary to what you would think would work, but that was it. Not a big drop, but at least a few lbs. Drinking all my fluids seems to be the hardest thing to accomplish daily. I am a nurse, so it's hard to fit all that sipping in all day.

My hardest task every single day is getting in my fluids as well.

I still have problems with that, even at almost 8 months out :(

I have hit many stalls, I found the scale to be a love/hate relationship. I always went by the fit of my clothes - which was actually the first real reality check for when I began to gain, too.

I was exactly like you! Slow and steady and stalls..... Then the break and I loose more again, then repeat the cycle. Just hang in there! Your body will finally give in. I'm still loosing slower than most, but I've just accepted that we are all different. I'm loosing slow, but not loosing hair or muscle and feeling great.

I really appreciate this empathetic support. I had weird thoughts pre op, like I would be the one patient that this surgery would not work on.

It's funny...takes years to put the weight on, yet somehow, I think it will come off in one month...yeah, right!

I feel your pain. I was sleeved 9/24 and had lost 14 lbs when I went for my first check up at 17 days post op. I was thrilled. Since then I haven't lost a lb. To say that I was discouraged is to put it mildly. I could understand if I didn't feel like I was doing everything I could possibly do. I am even getting up at 545-6 am to go workout before work. I have sense dropped my carbs to 50 max a day and try to do less., I lost 5 lbs last week so I hope I am on the right track. I know it's hard to do the Water. I am a nurse also but I have found if I get a big cup, 32-64 oz, I can grab a drink and I can fool myself because I don't have to drink as many "glasses". I also start every day with 16 oz of water as I drive to work. I just keep telling my self I have lost 35 lbs and kept it off so that is a success. I also put on a pair of pants the other day that I haven't been able to wear and though they were tight I didn't have to lay down to zip them and could then sit down in them. lol Success! We just have to stay on track and remember it's a journey not a sprint! Good Luck to you.

I know that you are frustrated and it seems like you should be losing faster, but you are actually losing at a VERY good rate! Seriously, you are averaging 4.75 lbs a week!! Do you even realize how fast that is??? You need to wrap your mind around the fact that you are losing VERY rapidly, NOT SLOWLY as you seem to think. The sooner you realize this, the happier your journey will be. If you cannot make yourself stop weighing every day, I recommend you do two other things: 1) Do not compare your losses to anyone else's. 2) Do a little search on this forum to see how many people have posted this same topic over and over again. Read through some of the responses. Better yet, check out the profiles of some of the people who posted about stalls early on in their journey and look at how far they have come since then. I guarantee you that despite their fears, they kept right on losing. You aren't going to be the one person that fails at this, I promise. You just have to be patient. The weight will come off when it's good and ready to. Hang in there! :)

Stalls are frustrating, but it sounds like you're a really hard marker on yourself! :) 27 pounds in 4 weeks plus the pre op is awesome!! I think that's a terrific start. shake it off. Hide the scale, only weigh in weekly, and keep doing what you're doing - you're doing everything right!

One thing a Dr told me years ago is this....when you are on a low calorie diet (which we all are on)...it is impossible (even with a thyroid issue) for your body not to use your fat as energy. You will lose weight, the issue however, is most people give up.

I need to keep this in mind during this journey as well. Best of luck to you.

I'm at about 1/2 way to goal and I keep thinking and saying to myself that it is "over." That this is the best I can ever expect. It comes from a long history of diet failures. It still feels like no matter what I do.. I'll just gain back to where I was plus more. But the reality is that I keep losing weight. My head is not keeping up.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
