My doctor's office is requiring that I only eat high-Protein Meal Replacement shakes. I am allowed to mix in fruit, oatmeal, skim milk, and yogurt but I am not allowed to eat those foods alone. I'm having a hard time drinking these shakes because the taste is so bad so I'm literally starving everyday until my surgery.

I'm afraid that I'm going to pass out eventually and I know I'm probably doing more harm than good. My mom is worried about me since I'm literally only drinking Water for the next 13 days straight.

I called my doctor's office and asked if there were any alternative options to these shakes but they said no. I told them that I was struggling with the taste and I'm only consuming about 200 calories a day but they didn't seem to care. I think this is just a control thing to get me to break bad habits. I've seen that other people are allowed to eat whatever they want, as long as they lose about 10 pounds before surgery.....

I'm not trying to "cheat" on the pre-op diet, I'm just trying to think rationally. I don't understand how it can be healthy for me to go 13-15 days without eating or consuming any calories.

Does anyone know if I can sneak a few low-calorie foods without my doctor knowing? They gave me a list of things that I'm allowed to mix with the shakes....can I just eat those alone?

Diet Jello, applesauce, SF popsicles, Peanut Butter, yogurt, etc.....

Or does anyone have any other suggestions? I don't want to start off this process on the wrong foot so I'm looking for the truth behind the pre-op diet. Is this really going to hurt me if I take a bite of jello?

My NUT allows non starchy veggies and pure Protein (chicken fish non red meat) the calories in those are minimal compared to the amt of protein...maybe ask if you can have a small meal like that

Are you allowed to drink any ready made Protein Drinks? I like EAS carb control shakes..they're pretty cheap, ready to drink and you can get them at walmart..they come in dark choc, choc, strawberry and vanilla. I like them tastewise so much better than the ones I've whipped up with the powder. The other day I added a few drops of peppermint extract to a dark choc one and it tasted like a peppermint patty! :)

For my pre-op liquid diet, my clinic has listed a very reasonably priced -- Carnation Instant Breakfast sugar free Shakes....grocery stores sell them as ready to drink bottles (4 pack); also sold in a powder. They actually taste exceptionally well, however, the down side is that they only come in chocolate flavor; otherwise they are reasonably priced and won't break the bank. I start my pre-op 11/19 so I am starting to purchase a variety so I won't get bored with the same thing!!

I think the shakes taste yucky too! They are to sweet for my taste buds! I found that chocolate mixed with Peanut Butter is good.

I understand how you feel. I hated the pre-op diet. I drank two Protein shakes a day and a low fat-low carb dinner for 14 days. I was allowed sugar free Snacks too. I just had my surgery Monday and everything went great, the doctor said. He said my liver was small which made it easier to do

the surgery.

Are you allowed any Peanut Butter? I know weird question. But I was trying to choke down a Adkins advantage vanilla shake today, ended up putting it in my blender with a banana, teaspoon Hershey fat free sugar free Syrup (15 calories) and a table spoon Peanut Butter (90 calories). It actually was pretty tasty and kept me full for about 4 hours. Just a thought, to try and spice up these funky shakes.

I'm gonna keep playing with altering them with out adding too many calories so when I'm post op I have a clue what I can stomach lol

I have to lose 15 to 20lbs pre op..is this a reasonable expectation for this pre op diet? It seems so much to lose especially since I have struggling for soooo long to even lose 5lbs.

Yes, that's very possible! I've only been on mine for five days and I've already lost 12 pounds. In all honesty though, you're gonna pay for those 15-20 pounds.....I've been starving all week, it's not fun! :(

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
