Hi Di!! Welcome to our Utah thread. Feel free to ask lots of questions. :)

I haven't been online too much because my sister was in town with my brand new nephew (he's just now 4 weeks old). How is everyone doing??

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for the responses to my "would you wait 6 months if you had to self pay" question. I really appreciate the advice. But, now I don't have to worry...I WAS APPROVED!! Yay! :clap2: I am so excited, and surgery is scheduled for May 17! I was having a week of anxiety, wondering if I was doing the right thing, etc. a couple of weeks ago. Since I got my approval all of that has gone away though, which is odd, I would have thought it would be the other way around because now it's real. Ohhh, and on May 3, I have to start my very low calorie diet. I think I'll do primarily some sort of Protein shakes and maybe one small meal a day to make sure I stay well below 1000 cals a day. What did you all do for preop diets? Was it as bad as it sounds?

Wen

Congrats on your date, Wen! that's wonderful news. Dr. Hansen doesn't require a pre-surgery diet so I didn't have to go through that torture, lol. Good luck with it--be careful of the "Last Meal Syndrome!" It's a killer. Keep us posted and good luck.

Hi there Utahns!!!

Jessica I am doing Grrreat!!! Thanks for asking! How are you? I really am surprised how well I have pulled through. I saw my surgeon last Monday for my 2 week post op visit and he said everything looks good. I asked him when i can start playing hockey again (field hockey, I am very slow but still have some skills! LOL) he said when I feel up to it either this week or next. I went to practice this week and took it easy, seamed OK and so i played today. All my team mates cant believe I had surgery 2 and a half weeks ago and am playing a rough sport!

So I am happy. I have lost this week 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs) I just cant seem to only weigh in once a week. My official weigh in is Monday, and it isnt often that I say "I cant wait to weigh in?!?!?!?"

Anyway, thanks for letting me pop in here. :) Salt Lake is my second home. Its possible I might be coming out in January. Which will be great, freezing but great!!!

Take care fellow bandits!!! Your Aussie pal.......Di

PS: Wen I had to do 4 wks on a VLCD and so I did Optifast. It is tough the 1st few days but your body will go into starvation mode. I lost 8kg in that time (almost 18lbs). My only advice drink lots and lotsa Water. That will help fill you up. Good luck it is worth it!!

Hi I was reading through some replys and read your little blirp about kids and i to have 6m old son, 2 yr old daughter and an 8 almost 9yr old (she alwaysreminds me that she is almost 9:) I am going to be getting banded on the 25th of this month. I am feeling those same feelings of scared nervous and just excited! I am doing it down in Mexico because I would never be able to jump through all the hoops that they want you to do in the US. I have talked to oddles of people who have gone down there and had a great experience so I feel good about it. My starting weight is 212, and I know that people tell me that its not enough to get this drastic thing done. but this is a problem for me and I dont want to continue to go from day to day and gradually get higher and talk and talk about it. I want to just get it taken care of right now so I can have a different story to my life. Sorry I am rambling, but I guess that is what this is for right:)

Hi all.....a new utahn to join the ranks of the banded beginning December 8th!!! I am excited and scared all at the same time. I live in South Jordan, and love my neighborhood! I have three kids, 10, 2 and 6 months. I am originally from Las Vegas, Nevada. I have been overweight my whole life but the last two years have hovered around 270's. I have lost and regained several times my lowest weight being 140 in my early 30's. I am excited to get back to that!!!! I will have lots of fun clothes!!! Well good luck to you all.....and let me know if you have any good advice for the pre-op and first week of being banded for me!

Good luck to you and congrats on your date. Are you living in Utah? I have a fairly low BMI (not as low as yours) and didn't have any problem getting approved by Dr. Hansen in Sandy. I'm self-pay as well. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it because I didn't really have any hoops to jump through and I love the fact that my surgeon is just a phone call or quick drive away. Good job taking control of your weight while you are young. There is another thread here that has been really helpful to me: Lower BMI bandsters. I also think you might enjoy reading March 2007 bandsters and there is probably an April one as well that will give you lots of good ideas about what to expect for your surgery. Good luck! Karen

Welceom kaylali!! I also had my surgery done by Dr. Hansen, but insurance covered it. There are quite a few people on the board (outside of Utah) who have been banded in Mexico. Just do a search for Mexico and you should find something. Good luck!!

Hi, I'm Rebecca. I will be banded on May 14th by Dr. Mckeen. I'm excited and nervous too. I hope you guys will be able to help me with my questions.

Is it just me or does this site keep changing? I've only posted a couple of times but it's been different each time.

I've been doing pretty good. I have only had the nurses do my fills, so I don't know how it was before that.

Hi Utahns! How bout them Jazz huh?!;) I was just reading through the posts and it sounds like everyone is doing really well. Yay us! I'm on day 8 of my 15-day liquid pre-op. Yesterday and today have been pretty darn hard. I've been moody and that makes me really want to eat and not being able to eat makes me moody and so on and so on. But, I'm keeping my eyes on the prize. One week until banding! I think I just might make it. :(

Hi

I have not posted in a while as I have been busy opening my shop and going to school. But I had my second fill yesterday and I hope I get more restriction than I did with my first fill. I now have 1.4 cc in my band.

Lost 30 lbs so far... Yeah. Surgery date March 12 2007. I'll be back. Take care everyone!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
