Yes, this is a quiet thread. Sorry you are struggling! What's going on? Have you gotten a fill yet? I can't remember where you had your surgery--let me know. How much have you lost? Let us know what is going on and maybe we can talk. Good luck!

I had my surgery on October 8 with Dr. Hansen. I did awesome while I was eating liquids and mushies. But it has been over 2 months, and I have only lost about 16 pounds. I think I lost all but 4 of those pounds in the first few weeks.

I have had two fills so far. I was scheduled to have another fill last Monday, but I have recently been throwing up. I have thrown up 4 times in the past two weeks (I worry because I don't want my band to slip). I don't know if I am just eating to much or not chewing my food enough.

Well, last week I decided to get a grip on my weight. I was eating small portions, not drinking for two hours after I ate (I have never broken this rule), doing cardio and lifting weights. After a week of doing this, I gained .4 pounds! I am so discouraged. Does anyone have any ideas of what I am doing wrong? I would love any suggestions!

So sorry you are having a hard time. Your story sounds a lot like mine. I really struggled to lose anything until my 9th or 10th fill (not that it will take you that long--especially if you are throwing up now). Finally, I'm moving a bit but at 6 months out I think I had only lost about 20 lbs. and at least half of that was during the first few weeks. I'm still losing really slowly--about 2 lbs every 3-4 weeks, but I am losing.

Don't be discouraged by doing everything right and gaining a little. You know, I'm sure that muscle weighs more than fat. So with your weight training you probably gained muscle.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. Are you eating Protein first? Avoiding simple carbs (sugar, white flour, etc.)? Chewing a lot and taking m & m sized bites? Try all that and keep your chin up. You WILL lose! It just might be slow until you adjust to the exercise, the band, and a new lifestyle. Good luck!

Your body is just going through a shock, it takes time to start losing after a few months. You will do ok. Keep up the exercise and drink lots of Water.< /p>

Hi Everyone!

I havent been on this thread for a while either. I've been a little frustrated because I've been stuck at 32 lbs for the last 2 weeks. I keep reminding myself that any weight lost prior to a fill is just a "bonus", and I think it's time for a fill since I havent had one yet. So my first fill will be in 2 weeks. I'm feeling really great though, threw out all my 3X scrubs for work which was lots of fun!

I have the next 2 weeks off work, so my goal is to spend as much time as possible at the gym. I have a birthday coming up and my goal was to be -40 lbs by then, so I need to get moving!!!

Happy Holidays to everyone!!

Jill

HI, I was wondering if anyone has had Dr Smith or Dr Simper in Utah, or any other doctor that does this surgery at St Marks hospital? I am scheduled for the class on Jan 15th, 2007, still trying to decide on which doctor and which surgery to have.

Sorry, but I haven't heard of them either. Are they new? I was banded last March and I don't remember their names from back then. Good luck!

HI momlambert Im glad your doing good, Where did you have your surgery done? Those 2 doctors have been around for quite a while. They operate at St Marks and they are with Rocky Mountain Medical, they were doing it 5 or 6 years ago when my sister had her gastric bypass

I had my surgery done at South Valley Surgical, Drs. Hansen and Alldredge. They were wonderful. I had the surgery at 6:30 a.m. and left for home at noon. I really like their support group--meetings twice a month and also a dinner at a restaurant (open to anyone in Utah) once a month. This month it's on Monday, January 21st (Martin Luther King Day) at 6:00

p.m. at the Old Spaghetti Factory--5718 S. 1900 West in Taylorsville. Their phone number is 966-2765. Anyone want to go? Let me know and I'll meet you--I haven't decided whether or not to go because I live in Midway and hate to drive the canyon in the winter at night. But if anyone wants to go and meet me there, I'll go for sure. Let me know!

I just wanted to jump in here...even though the thread's a little dated. I'm from South Jordan, so it looks like a few of us are almost neighbors! Dr. Hansen did my surgery, but I've only seen him twice in 11 months. That's OK though..I really like the clinic and have no problem with fills etc. It's nice to see that I'm not the only one around here who's been through this. Love to chat.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
